Per chi non lo sapesse faccio parte del team di supporto italiano a WordPress. Come molti ho cominciato (nel 2003) senza sapere nulla di questo splendido software e ho imparato di giorno in giorno grazie a HTML.IT, al forum di supporto di Wordpress.org, al forum italiano a google e almeno fino a che non è passata al lato oscuro anche tramite elena. Mi sento di dire che wordpress è per molti ma non per tutti. Poi dipende sempre da cosa uno vuole ottenere. wordpress è semplicissimo da installare e altrettanto semplice da usare. wordpress però, come tutti i software ha bisogno di essere costantemente aggiornato e manutenuto pena la compromissione del proprio blog. Troppe volte leggo di persone che scrivono “mi tengo la vecchia e gloriosa 2.3.1” peccato che al momento in cui scrivo questo post l’unica versione stabile e sicura della serie 2.x sia la 2.5.1 (escludo la serie 2.0 che è cmq sicura perchè costantemente aggiornata per la Debian) e che quindi non aggiornando si diventa facile preda dei cattivi ragazzi. Le operazioni di aggiornamento e manutenzione non sono difficili ma richiedono tempo e attenzione ed un minimo di preparazione. La manutenzione prevede backup regolari del database (troppi non lo fanno) e naturalmente dei files (qui lo fanno ancora meno). Adesso però arrivano le note dolenti, la modifica dei template. Fino a che si tratta di sostituire l’immagine nell’header è cosa alla portata di molti (anche se nel forum di assistenza riceviamo continuamente richiesta in tal senso) ma se si tratta di fare cose più incisive non è possibile esimersi da una discreta conoscenza di CSS e di un pò di HTML e di PHP e qui casca l’asino. Troppi cercano di fare le modifiche senza riuscirci incasinando di brutto il template pretendendo poi che altri lo rimettano a posto per loro e se fai loro notare che l’assistenza è sui problemi di wordpress e non su CSS o HTML o PHP si arrabbiano pure. Altri addirittura se ne arrivano mettendo link ad altri blog con la domanda “come si fa a farli così?” con la convinzione che qualcuno faccia il lavoro per loro gratis. I migliori però sono quelli che arrivano e ti dicono “AIUTO il blog non va cosa devo fare?” e la risposta più cortese che gli si può dare è “Scusa la sfera di cristallo è in riparazione“. Direte voi poverini magari non sanno cosa devono dire, NO sbagliato lo saprebbero se leggessero questa comunicazione scritta in caratteri cubitali PRIMA dello spazio per scrivere il proprio post: LEGGERE CON ATTENZIONE!! Se la domanda riguarda un blog ospitato su wordpress.com questo NON è il forum di assistenza di wordpress.com, pertanto la richiesta verrà ignorata o cancellata senza alcuna comunicazione. wordpress.com ha un proprio forum di supporto ed ha dei limiti su cosa è possibile fare sopratutto a livello di modifica dei temi, quindi fate riferimento al forum di supporto di wordpress.com Prima di porre una domanda o una richiesta di aiuto per problemi vari assicuratevi di aver già verificato se il problema si presenta anche se: - Tutti i plugin sono stati disattivati - Avete impostato il tema standard Fornite il maggior numero di informazioni possibili, versione di WP, hosting utilizzato e tipologia (unix/windows), se il problema si è verificato dopo qualche modifca e/o aggiunta, quale file stavate modificando o modificate etc etc. Insomma aiutateci ad aiutarvi, dover porre sempre le stesse domande prima di poter fare una dignosi è una perdita di tempo e farà si che la vostra richiesta abbia meno considerazione rispetto a richieste maggiormente dettagliate. Se non ricevete una risposta NON SOLLECITATE la risposta facendo un UP per riportare la discussione in cima alla lista, i moderatori cancelleranno gli UP senza alcuna comunicazione e perseguendo nella cosa si verrà anche bannati dal forum per un periodo di tempo. In pochissimi leggono e ci aiutano ad aiutarli dandoci le informazioni necessarie per comprendere il loro problema. I peggiori sono però quelli che ti vengono a chiedere cose già discusse nel forum decine e decine di volte se non addirittura informazioni sul funzionamento di base di wordpress tipo come faccio a mettere il maiuscolo. Capitolo a parte alcuni cosiddetti “professionisti” ma di questo ho già parlato. Quindi per concludere: Se volete un blog di base usate wordpress.com,blogger o altri servizi simili Se proprio volete un vostro blog self hosted: Fate i backup di database e file Fate gli aggiornamenti costantemente Studiate il CSS Studiate HTML Studiate il PHP Leggete il wiki Usate google Cercate nel forum di assistenza Se non trovate la soluzione chiedete nel forum leggendo prima “LEGGERE CON ATTENZIONE” in modo di non costringerci a cavarvi le informazioni con la pinza perchè nessuno di noi è pagato per farvi assistenza. Di conseguenza tutti i post hanno la medesima formattazione. Capita però la necessità di avere dei post con diversa formattazione nel post singole, per esempio nel mio caso specifico le pagine delle foto delle gallery. Ora vi spiego come si può dare una formattazione diverse ad alcuni post, io vi mostrerò un metodo che però non è l’unico possibile. Ho scelto per semplicità e velocità di creare una categoria ad hoc per questi post con formattazione speciale. Una volta creata guardare l’id della categoria e memorizzatelo. Poi fate una copia del single.php del vostro tema, per sicurezza. Poi create un nuovo file, il mio l’ho chiamato singlephotos.php dove creerete la formattazione che preferite per i vostri post particolari. A questo punto aprite il vostro file single.php e inserite come prima linea il seguente codice: < ?php if(!in_category('754')){?> Il 754 è l’id della mia categoria, voi dovete semplicemente sostituire i 754 con l’id della vostra categoria speciale. Ora vi posizionate in fondo al vostro file single.php e come ultima riga inserite: < ?php }else{load_template(TEMPLATEPATH . '/singlephotos.php');}?> sostituendo singlephotos.php con il nome del vostro file con la formattazione diversa. A questo punto salvate il vostro nuovo single.php e lo caricate nella cartella del vostro tema insieme al vostro file con la formattazione particolare (nel mio caso singlephotos.php). Ora tutti i post con la categoria particolare avranno una formattazione diversa quando saranno visualizzati singolarmente. We have conventional Search Engines such as Google and yahoo but one year back WordPress.com has come up with a Search Engine which can search within WordPress.com. I don’t see a valid reason for this, according to WordPress.com it’ll show the post in the result once it’s published, in other words instantly. I don’t think this initiation will become popular because even Google can fetch your blog update within 10 minutes. I have seen and amazed on how Google index posts from our blog so quickly. In the other hand you have enough options in Google where in WordPress.com search haven’t got any advance searching feature.
May be WordPress.com could have extended their search to other self hosted blogs too. It would have brought much wider audience to the search Engine. This is only just a WordPress.com search engine, nothing much to talk on this feature. PS: Tamil interface also available for WordPress.com search

Voici un thème très (ou très peu selon votre avis) original car je pense que c’est la première fois que j’en vois un semblable. Eh oui, cette fois c’est Google qui est représenté dans wordpress sous la forme du thème Woogle (W pour wordpress evidemment) Ce thème est extrèmement ressemblant à la page Google, parfaitement lisible et clair ! Seulement je dois avouer que ça fait assez « drole » d’utiliser ce thème pour un blog wordpress car tous les utilisateurs seront assez confus de par le fait qu’ils utilisent Google pour leurs recherches et donc qu’ils seront perdus sur votre page d’accueil. Ce qui est embetant aussi c’est le fait que le contenu des articles ne dépasse pas une certaine largeur et que donc si vous avez un écran plus grand vous aurez un espace blanc entre le contenu et la sidebar. Il est évident que ce thème est prêt à être utilisé avec AdSense, surtout dans la sidebar et pourquoi pas dans les fameux « deux premiers liens commerciaux » de Google dont on sait qu’ils ont beaucoup d’importance ! Continuing in the lesson on how to upgrade Blogger to a wordpress installation! Today, I’ll explain how to install wordpress on the web site you got up and running yesterday. (For earlier lessons click Getting a hosting plan and Creating your “website”. var AdBrite_Title_Color = '0000FF'; var AdBrite_Text_Color = '000000'; var AdBrite_Background_Color = 'FFFFFF'; var AdBrite_Border_Color = 'FFFFFF'; Your Ad Here I hope the length of these directions aren’t frighntening you off! What I’m trying to do is give a detailed illustrated explanations for an instruction that some bloggers would explain in this single line: “To install wordpress at Dreamhost, click ‘Goodies=>OneClick Installation=>Select options’ Then click to activate”. My explanation will include screenshots, words, and also try to explain how the same advice applies if you use Fantastico instead of “one click installation”. So, how to actually install Wordpress There are at least two ways to install Wordpress: The extremely very easy way and the “hard” way. It’s not that hard.1 Nevertheless, I advise installing the easy way: The easy way to install Wordpress Use a hosting plan that offers “one click installation” or “fantastico” for Wordpress. Fill out an easy form, click a button. Wait 10 minutes. I use Dreamhost, so I can show you how to do a simple install using their service. If you use another service, you will likely find “Fantastico”, which has very similar steps. (But the screen shots will look different.). If you can’t find either, ask your support service where to find one of these services. How to use Dreamhost’s ‘one click’ installation. Log into your Dreamhost account. Look at the left hand navigation panel. Click “Goodies”; then click “One-Click Installs”. You will arrive at the “One Click install page. Decide on the directory name for your blog. Say your blog domain name is “myblogdomain.com”. You could put your blog in “myblogdomain.com/blog”. Clever directory, huh? Or, if it’s going to be a knitting blog, you could name it “myblogdomain.com/knitting”. You can call it whatever you want. We’ll assume you picked “blog”. You will find a box to enter this directory. If you decided on “blog”, enter “blog”. Scroll down the page. Select wordpress from the list of software you can install. Scroll down more. Fill out the rest of the form: Decide on a database name– it can be anything. “Blog” is fine. Select the hostname they suggest, pick the user they suggest (or create a new one), click install. If no user exists, you will need to create a new one. The name doesn’t matter, you almost never need to remember it, and Dreamhost will make it easy for you to re-discover the name. To have a little bit of extra security beyond your password, pick something a little odd. Take a break! You’re finished for now. The “one click installation” will now create the database and perform all file transfers necessary to install Wordpress. Dreamhost will send you an email telling you it’s begun the job; they’ll send you another in 10 minutes telling you wordpress is installed. That email will contain some fairly easy to follow instructions telling you how to customize. You’ll probably figure that out. However, since you’ve just installed the blog, you’ll naturally find it will contain no entries and look as useless as your blogger blog looked the day you first created it, but I’ll tell you how to fix that in the next lesson. What will you learn next? In the next lessons, I’ll give my additional two cents on things you should do to: Improve security. Make your blog prettier. Import your old Blogger blog entries! After that, the paths you can take with your blog diverge, so no more “beginner” lessons. You quickly find that you understand the wordpress Jargon enough to follow the “very clear” instructions wordpress developers give (You know, like ) Footnote: 1. If you install the hard way, you will be forced to upgrade the hard way forever. One click upgrade only works if you used one-click installation! Upgrading a Blogger Blog to wordpress for Beginners; Lesson I
Snoskred asked me to write tutorials on how to move a Blogger blog to a wordpress blog hosted on your own domain. So, I will write a tutorial for beginners. If you are advanced and know exactly what “FTP”, “MySQL”, “the database”, or “plugins are”, you don’t need this tutorial! In contrast, true beginners need a multi-part series that explains everything from “step 1″. When I am done, it’s likely people will be able to follow the instructions and transfer their Blogger blog with less than four hours of effort. (And some of that time will be spent shopping for an appropriate host and domain name.) var AdBrite_Title_Color = '0000FF'; var AdBrite_Text_Color = '000000'; var AdBrite_Background_Color = 'FFFFFF'; var AdBrite_Border_Color = 'FFFFFF'; Your Ad Here Today, I’m going to describe preliminaries which include picking a hosting service and registering your domain name. Preliminaries to Setting Up a wordpress Blog. When you used Blogger, you didn’t need a hosting account and a domain. You also didn’t need to know what “FTP”. With wordpress will need these things. That means you need to pick a host and establish a hosting account. I use Dreamhost’s crazy insane hosting, but there are many good hosts. So, what do you do first? Research hosting plans. Ask at least three friends who have run a wordpress blog for at least 6 months to recommend a host. Ask them how much traffic they have, and if it’s similar to the amount of traffic you get, make sure they aren’t experiencing any load issues. Then, add that host to your list of candidate hosting accounts but don’t set up an account yet. Look up the price, and services for the hosting plans. Also, learn what type of support that company has. (I like Dreamhost support, which is done through tickets and email. Some companies provide online chat, which is great if you are a beginner.) Pick a hosting account that permits you to run at least twoWorpdress blogs. This means you will need to be able to create at least two MySQL databases. Why two WP installations? One will support your real blog; one will be a test blog. The test blog is optional, but it lets you check how an upgrade is going to work or test plugins are going to work before installing them on your real blog. I mostly use my test blog when developing plugins. That skanky looking blog is here Test Blog. Pick a hosting plan that includes a web based FTP service. Advanced users will scoff at this advice. They’ll say, “Come on, just use Unix!” True beginners are saying “What’s FTP?!?!” I’m guessing if you have been using Blogger, you don’t want to learn Unix just to run a wordpress blog– and you don’t have to. These days, nearly all web web hosts support a graphical FTP service that make uploading plugins as easy as uploading your images to Flicker. If you know nothing about “FTP” and are worried, just ask the sales department at a hosting company if they have their own web based FTP. If they do, using FTP will be as easy as uploading images to Flicker. Dreamhost’sservice displays each of my domains as a “folder” or “directory”. I can click the directory links to see all the files and/or subdirectories in the folder, and I can upload by clicking “upload”. Load of other services are provided: zipping files, editing etc. It’s all very intuitive. (I also use Fetch for the Mac to upload and download files– it’s quicker, but doesn’t offer all the features Dreamhost provides. ) If they say they don’t have one, ask them to tell you how you would upload files to your hosting account (assuming you had one). The sales representative (or your friend) may make several suggestions like “use Fetch” or “use FrontPage”. If you don’t understand what they are telling you, or their method involves buying expensive software, or learning Unix, remember: there are tons of hosts that have web based FTP. If you need that service, and you need the service, find a host who provides it. Select a hosting plan that provides easy installation for Wordpress. Once again, advanced users will scoff. They will tell you that installing using FTP and a text editor is easy enough. Sure, sure. But clicking one button and letting a program someone else wrote create backups, perform file transfers and etc. is even easier. Many hosts use “Fantastico”; it’s very easy. Dreamhost has “one click installation” it’s even easier. Select the domain name you want. I registered (that is bought) “bigbucksblogger.com”. Of course, first you need to pick a domain name and check if it’s available. Here’s one way to check: visit Domaintools.com, enter a domain name (say “absolutelyridiculousdomain.com”). Click. If the domain is taken, the service will tell you who owns it. If it’s not, you will get a result like this: “Domain Status: Never Registered Before”. If it’s not registered, you’ll be able to register it. But don’t do it yet! You can register (buy) a domain name many places including your hosting company. In fact, many hosting services, including Dreamhost, provide one free domain name when you establish an account and permit you to buy more later. (I think I can buy additional domains for $9.95 through Dreamhost.) So, if the hosting company you were interested in provides a free domain name, register this when you register for hosting! You may also register domains with someone other than your hosting company. Still, for a complete beginners, it’s usually best to purchase your first domain through your hosting company because of the convenience. Why? Because if you register your domain names through your host, they will point the DNS (Domain Name Server) correctly for you. However, if you register through someone other than your host, you will need to figure out deal with your DNS yourself. Learn to point your DNS correctly. You only need to do this if you registered through someone other than your host! It’s easy to do. Ask your host the address of the “name server” for your hosting plan. They’ll tell you. My host is Dreamhost, and my nameservers have names like: ns1.dreamhost.com etc. (Note: if you absolutely can’t figure out nameservers for your domain, you may need to do tomorrow’s lesson first. The reason is that, with some hosts, you can’t get the info you need to point the DNS servers until after you create a directory.) Then, you visit your registrar (the company who sold you the domain name) and find the page that lets you change the DNS pointers. That page will look like the one shown below — but you will need to stick your host’s name servers in the boxes provided at your registrar’s site. Because Dreamhost is both my host and my registrar, I control these all at the same account. Not only that, Dreamhost set these up for me in the first place. That’s the advantage of registering a domain through your hosting service. So now what? Once you’ve figured out where you want to host your service, what domain name you want and where you want to register your domain, Take out your credit card (or paypal account number.) Open a hosting account at the hosting service, Register your domain name and Point your DNS (if necessary.) Then take a rest because you can’t do anything more for 24 hours. Your site will not be “live” until the DNS pointers do something called “resolving” and that takes time. No, you can’t even figure out if you screwed up your DNS pointers for 24 hours. Seo Egghead has evidently discovered a WP 2.3.1 vulnerability HTML-tainting attacks. (The vulnerability evidently exists in W.P 2.1). The apparent application is to inject ads into bloggers older posts; these would tend to look like paid links. The problems for you would be a potential drop in page rank. SEO Egghead recommends bloggers check their posts for insserted links to mp3 sites he has discovered at his site, and provides a plugin for this purpose. I may be wrong, but I think you need to use his plugin. You should be able to get the same information by clicking “manage” in your dashboard, finding the big “search box” and entering ‘adshelper’. Then, click search. WP will return a list of posts containing links to “adshelper”. Next repeat the search for ’softicana’. If both searches return zero pages, you’re clean. While your at it: why assume these are the only hacker-advertisers? Take a little time and search for words like “mp3″, “casino”, “mortgage”, “viagra” and anything else you can dream up. If you find anything, blog about it so other bloggers can learn and check. With luck, if my suggested method of testing useless, and you really do need to use the plugin, Seo Egghead will pop in and tell us I’m wrong. (I asked at his blog last night, and I’ll keep checking for an answer .) Are you wondering how I did? I seem to be ‘clean’ on both ‘adshelper’, ’softicana’ and a variety of other terms I dreamed up. Hmmm… Plugin idea If these sorts of HTML tainting attacks are common, I should probably write a plugin that periodically scans all blog posts for a standard set of blacklist terms, plus terms in the users own blacklist. Monthly checks at all our blogs would let us catch these things and warn others. It would be an easy plugin… hmmm…. If readers do run this test, and any come up “tainted”, I’ll seriously consider writing that plugin. Meanwhile, I need to get through updating all my existing ones first! Two tips to avoid Duplicate Content:Robots.txt or Meta Robots wordpress Plugin
Do you use tags? Did you know they can bash your Google Page rank? But you can fix that? Reading Graywolf’s blog, I was reminded to watch out for duplicate content issues and Wordpress. It turns out that the wordpress default doesn’t nofollow “tags”. Because bloggers who tag posts tend to create zillions of tags, they often end up with exactly one post in a many individual “/tag/” directories. This nearly always create duplicate content, which is not a good thing. You’ll want to fix this; it’s fairly easy. I fixed the issue by modifying my robots.txt file. What’s a Robot.txt file? The robots.txt file is a plain text file you place in your root directory. It tells robots not to crawl specific files thereby eliminating the duplicate content issue. The robot.txt file for BigBucksBlogger now reads like this: User-agent: * Disallow: /*.js Disallow: /*.png Disallow: /*trackback Disallow: /*.css Disallow: /*/feed/$ Disallow: /*/feed/rss/$ Disallow: /*/trackback/$ Disallow: /tag/ Disallow: /author/ Disallow: /comments/ Disallow: /wp-content/plugins/ Disallow: /wp-content/cache/ Disallow: /wp-content/themes/ Disallow: /wp-admin/ Disallow: /*?* Disallow: /*? I’m keeping robots out of my tag, author, comments and wp-admin directories, out of a number of subdirectories in wp-contents, and out of javascript, png, css, trackback files. Because I don’t use the wordpress default permalinks, I’ve also blocked robots from crawling addresses with query strings. Do this only if you aren’t using query strings in your permalinks otherwise, you’ll block the ‘bots from your whole site. You really don’t want to do that. Permitting the bot to index duplicate content is bad; indexing no content is worse. I could block the bots from other files, but there is generally no need to block the robots from any file that is never linked. Also, you never want to block robots from your index.php file, sitemap or ‘.php’ files in general. Once you create the robot.txt file, just save it with the name robots.txt file and drop it in my root directory. Should you block from categories? I don’t block bots from my categories directory because I only post excerpts on those pages. So, I don’t worry too much about duplicate content on those pages. In fact, since I find the ‘bots often index those and bring me traffic, I want the ‘bots to crawl those. (I am planning to change things to post 10 excerpts per page; I think that will make it easier for people who look at categories to find what they want to find.) If you run full articles in your categories, you may wish to block ‘bot from those. The same holds for all your archives. (I’m going to be modifying my template to show nothing but excerpts at all addresses except the front page and the individula posts. This should prevent a lot of duplicate content issues without the need to block ‘bots.) Is there anything you can do to avoid duplicate content? Sure. In fact, there is a great Meta Robots wordpress plugin available that lets you tailor no-follows on your blog. One of the options is adding nofollow metatags to the headers of files in your “tag” directories. This will eliminate the duplicate content penalty as well. Using the plugin also permits you to precisely tailor link-juice flow around your blog. I’ll be using this soon and explaining many of my “nofollow” decisions after I install the plugin. It gives you the ability to search for books and other items right from your post or page editor. Type in the keywords or book title, and it’ll return a list of options. Select the item to include and the size of the image (Note: Large is LARGE!), and that’s it. The plugin generates the code in your post/page edit field, including the image and your affiliate code. The Google Analytics for wordpress plugin automatically inserts the code throughout the site and tracks stats for all outbound links, comment author links, downloads and more. It even tags and segments outgoing links, discounts your visits to the site, and tracks AdSense clicks. Page Links To Many people want to add links to outside sites to their main navigation. A forum, another blog, a sales site… The Page Links To plugin lets you create that link without having to fuss around with figuring out how to get people over to that other site without hand-coding the link in. Point out all you want! Page Mash You can set the order of the pages in your main navigation easily by assigning them a number. That means going into each page and manually assigning order. The Page Mash plugin makes assigning page order even easier, giving you the ability to drag and drop pages right in your dashboard. Now you can see all your pages laid out before you so that you can arrange them exactly to your tastes. Contact Form 7 There’s a lot of contact form plugins for WordPress, and the most popular seems to be the CFormsII plugin. That plugin can do a lot of stuff and really let you design your contact page like a pro, but we’ve also found that CFormsII isn’t that user friendly. The Contact Form 7 plugin offers an easier option for most needs. WP Super Cache Now that you’ve got this great list of plugins, you’re going to have to make sure your blog runs at optimal speeds and doesn’t suck too much CPU usage from your host. Too many plugins have the potential to drain a server and bog it down. The WP Super Cache plugin helps alleviate the issue, generating static html files from your blog that make it easier for the server to process, which in turn helps speed up load time. One Click wordpress now offers the ability to upgrade most plugins automatically from the dashboard, but the One Click plugin provides extra configuration features that help make the process of updating plugins easier. Be sure to read the Installation Notes first, since you have to set your plugins folder and files to writeable on the server. OIO Publisher The OIO Publisher plugin removes you as the middleman from selling ad space on your site. With ad management that lets you approve, reject or renew ads, sell products or set up your own affiliate programs, it’s a hefty little plugin you could put to good use. Many of the improvements involve the scripting and style under the hood, which speeds up wordpress to make it much faster to load and less stressful on your web server. The real fun stuff is in the dashboard, though. You may not notice a difference at first glance, but once you start navigating through your dashboard, you’ll find some changes you’ll like. Drag-and-Drop Widgets One of the biggest changes in wordpress 2.8 involves the widget section. In version 2.7, widgets were frustrating at times. You had to make sure to save them before exiting the screen, and you couldn’t use duplicate widgets across multiple sidebars. All of that has changed in the latest version. The widget interface now shows all your sidebars simultaneously in the right-hand column through expandable windows. On the left-hand side, you’ll see your available widgets and inactive widgets. What’s the difference? You’re going to like this: In the past, when you removed a widget from the sidebar, you’d lose all the code or text you put into it. Now you don’t have to worry about losing any information when you temporarily remove a widget and replace it with another. Dragging a widget to the Inactive Widget panel saves the widget’s information and stores it until you’re ready to use it again. Don’t want to save the widget? Then drag it back to the Available Widgets panel and automatically delete the settings. Theme Management wordpress 2.8 makes it easier than ever to search for and try out new themes for your site. Gone are the days when you’d have to change your whole theme just to get a peek at what it might look like. You don’t need a maintenance mode plugin either, and visitors won’t get a sneak preview while your blog tries on a new outfit. In the Manage Themes view (Dashboard>Appearance>Themes), you’ll notice a few extra links under theme thumbnails. Activate installs the theme without a preview. Preview opens up a lightbox and gives you the option to activate the theme. Delete removes the theme from your site without you having to do so through your web server or an FTP program. Another new addition to the Theme management section is Add New Themes. This search function is pretty handy for browsing the thousands of themes in the wordpress Themes directory. Configure the Feature Filter for colors, number of columns, type of width and features, and you’ll enjoy making a number of selections without ever leaving your dashboard. While browsing themes, you can install and preview them right from the dashboard, too. Have a Premium theme in a zip file on your computer? No problem. The Upload feature allows you to upload and install a theme stored in a .zip format. This eliminates the need for an FTP program to install theme files, and you’ll never have to touch your web host cPanel again. Screen Options Each panel in the Dashboard now has its own screen options located in the upper right-hand side of the screen. Screen options let you customize the look of each panel in the Dashboard to fit your personal preferences. On the main Dashboard page, there’s an option to choose 1 to 4 columns, making the dashboard flexible enough to fit small or large screens. You also have the option to show or hide other options, like Recent Comments, Incoming Links, Recent Drafts and more. Other panels of wordpress 2.8, such as Edit Posts, Edit Pages, Plugins, etc, also have similar options, improving the wordpress experience. Bugs? The biggest conflicts occurring with a wordpress upgrade to 2.8 seem to involve (so far) the plugins. Before you perform an upgrade of your WordPress, make sure to update all your plugins and themes – if upgrades are available. Many developers have prepared for the wordpress 2.8 release and worked out the bugs to make the transition easier. Thesis has released a new version of its theme, and it’s advisable to upgrade, since Thesis isn’t as conventional in coding as most other themes. Themes that use more traditional CSS and scripts should be fine. Once you do upgrade your site to wordpress 2.8, activate each plugin one by one. Don’t perform a bulk plugin activation. After you reactivate a plugin, check your site for errors and if all is well, move on to reactivate the next. This makes it easier to fix an issue, because you’ll know which plugin is causing problems. If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.Powered by WP Greet BoxI’ve been using wordpress for a while and created quite a few blog sites and affiliate stores from using it since then. One of the best things about wordpress is its constantly moving forward in terms of development. With the added benefit of being able to install numerous wordpress plugins to sites, wordpress just about has the answer to every one of my problems covered, when creating and developing my affiliate sites. For me when I started out in affiliate marketing, I found building sites quite difficult, as trying to find everything I needed to make a good site and pull it all together, just seemed to take forever or they simply never worked, even after all the hard work that had been put in. Never tried wordpress before?.. If you haven’t tried using wordpress before then do it now. Some people think all you can do on wordpress is create blogs. Let me tell you, thats not true,  you can also create very effective affiliate stores and eshops by using it. And best of all wordpress its free! – Which is simply amazing really. Choosing which plugins to use does vary depending on what type of site/blog I’m creating. There are however some that I nearly always use, so I’ve picked them to list and show you here. My most popular wordpress plugins… 1. All In One SEO… wordpress is already naturally good for getting your sites optimised for the search engines,  mainly due to the way blog sites are geared up for adding new fresh content and easy for the search bots to crawl. Add this plugin and end up with an SEO machine! It enables you to simply and easily add meta title tags, descriptions and keywords to all of your posts or pages. 2. Sociable… Another great plugin managed by Joost. (Yoast) Sociable allows your users to bookmark your site, email to friends, print pages, or access RSS feeds from your site/blog. Once installed the plugin displays icons at the bottom of pages or posts. You can choose which options you wish to display depending on the nature of your site and also turn it on or off on individual posts/pages. There are loads of social networks to choose from like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Digg, plus many more. (You can see the icons at the bottom of this page) 3. My Page Order… Sounds simple.. And it is. I tend to create alot of pages when I create wordpress sites. It used to be a bit of a nightmare organising pages into the correct order because with wordpress you had to arrange each page in order by allocating a number to each one. Whenever new pages were added to the site you sometimes had to re-number them all and it was easy to get things mixed up. As soon as you install My Page Order, you can simply drag and drop your pages into order you want. This also includes sub-category pages. 4. WP – GreetBox… Depending on how you arrived here at Marketing Mix, you may have received a greeting message. This was generated by the wordpress greetbox plugin. Again similar to ’sociable’ it supports alot of social networks and encourages users to bookmark your sites. You have the option to  individually change each greeting message to whatever you want. 5. Google XML Sitemaps… Creating a sitemap for your site is important as it allows search bots to crawl through your site more easily. Not only does this plugin generate a sitemap for you, but it also notifys google and other search engines whenever your site is updated (depending on what settings you choose). Tip: Don’t install this plugin until you have completed your site and ready to launch it. Its a great way of getting your site indexed. I’m always on the lookout for more great plugins, so if you use wordpress yourself and come across any that you find particularly usefull. I’d be keen to hear your thoughts. schließen Google Suchergebnisse Folgende Begriffe wurden gesucht: wordpress terminverwaltung Bitte oben einen Suchbegriff anklicken um hier zum ersten Treffer zu gelangen (wenn vorhanden) oder zurück gehen zur Trefferliste aller Ergebnisse. wordpress eignet sich grundsätzlich auch als kleines Content-Management-System (CMS). Viele Projekte benötigen wenigstens eine kleine Terminverwaltung, die auf zukünftige Veranstaltungen hinweisen kann. Zudem sollen sich Termine und normale Beiträge leicht trennen lassen. Denn wer möchte schon sein wichtiges Jahresresümee gleichberechtigt neben dem Terminhinweis für die Weihnachtsfeier stehen haben?! Die Lösung bietet das WordPress-Plugin Event Calendar. Auf der rechten Seite sieht man den Kalender eingebunden. Unter dem Kalender sind die nächsten anstehenden Ereignisse (Events) aufgelistet. Die Einbindung in die Sidebar kann über Widgets oder direkte Bearbeitung der sidebar.php erfolgen. Dankenswerterweise sind die entsprechenden Code-Beispiele auf der Einstellungsseite von EventCalendar aufgeführt. Mit <?php ec3_get_calendar(); ?> wird der Kalender in die Sidebar eingebunden. Und mit <?php ec3_get_events(5); ?> werden die fünf nächsten Terminen aufgelistet. Über die Zahl in der Klammer kann man die Anzahl der kommenden Ereignisse einstellen. Da ich bei der oben abgebildeten Testinstallation nur einen Termin eingetragen habe, kann logischerweise auch nur einer angezeigt werden. Probleme gibt es dadurch nicht. Der Screenshot zeigt einen Termin. Es ist quasi ein normaler WordPress-Beitrag mit dem Zusatz des rot umrandeten Termins. Ebenso tauchen diese Termin-Beiträge nicht in der gewohnten chronologischen Sortierung der Beiträge auf, wenn man dies abschaltet. Einen neuen Termin erstellt man wie einen gewohnten Beitrag. Dazu muss man vorher eine eigene Kategorie erstellen, in der nur die Events eingetragen werden. Im Editor ist diese Kategorie dann ausgegraut und wird automatisch eingetragen, wenn man ein Datum eingibt. Dazu ist ganz unten auf der Neuen-Beitrag-erstellen-Seite ein Feld von EventCalendar geschaffen worden. Dort gibt man das Datum des neuen Termins ein. In englischer Notierung kann man das Start- und End-Datum entweder direkt eingeben (samt Uhrzeit) oder auch einen anwenderfreundlicheren Kalender benutzen. Die Einstellungsseite ist übersichtlich und komplett auf deutsch. Die Erklärungen der einzelnen Einstellungen sind kurz und vollkommen ausreichend. Kurz gesagt: Perfekt! Die eingetragenen Ereignisse lassen sich als .ical oder auch RSS-Feed abonnieren. Das Logo des EventCalendars lässt sich über die Einstellungen verstecken, was für einen mehr oder weniger professionellen Webauftritt auch wichtig sein dürfte. Das Design der Eventlisten, des Kalenders und der einzelnen Beiträge lässt sich über CSS leicht anpassen. Nach meiner Erfahrung und nach längere Suche ist Event Calendar das einzige kostenfreie Plugin für die Realisierung von wordpress als kleines CMS mit einer vernünftigen Kalenderfunktion.

wordpress Codeansicht: Individuelle Startseite Nachdem ich im ersten Teil die Vorarbeiten für eine individuelle Startseite vorstellte, geht es im zweiten Teil nun um konkrete Code-Beispiele. Wie man nur zwei statt den üblichen 10 Beiträgen einbindet, Monatsarchive, ein angepasstes Suchformular, Archive, eine Tagcloud, zuletzt kommentierte Artikel etc. Alle Codebeispiele sind von mir unter wordpress 2.7.x und 2.8 getestet und funktionieren bei mir problemlos. Alle Code-Schnipsel werden in dem zuvor erstellten Seitentemplate (siehe Teil 1) eingebunden. Einen Begrüßungstext einbinden Ein kleiner Begrüßungstext informiert Besucher über die zu erwartenden Inhalte. Auch wenn gerade bei Blogs (schließlich das Haupteinsatzgebiet von WordPress) oftmals einzelne Artikel die Einstiegspunkte sein werden, sollte eine Startseite zum weiteren Verfolgen der Seite auffordern. Und das mache ich persönlich nur, wenn ich weiß, was mich wohl erwarten wird. Das Einbinden eines gewöhnlichen Textes kann mit simplen HTML realisiert werden. Hier wird ebenso ein Bild eingebunden, um der Startseite auch “ein Gesicht zu verleihen”. Das Bild ist links ausgerichtet und hat einen Abstand zum umgebenden Text, der das Bild rechts umfließt. 1 2 3 4 <p><img src="Bild-URL" width="100" height="100" alt="Kurzbeschreibung" style="float:left; margin-right: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;" /> Hier kann nun der Text für die Startseite eingefügt werden. Einige <a href="URL">Links</a> können den Text sicherlich hilfreich erweitern. </p> Die Suchfunktion einfach einbinden Hat man die WordPress-eigene Suchfunktion erstmal funktionstüchtig gemacht, kann sie auch auf der Startseite anbieten. Da man alle Inhalte wahrscheinlich nicht auf der Startseite präsentieren kann, gibt man seinen Besuchern so die einfache Möglichkeit, nach ihren eigenen Interessen die Seite zu erkunden. Wobei viele Besucher wohl immer noch die altbewährten, blau unterstrichenen Links bevorzugen. Dieser Code bindet das Suchfeld ein. Sie vollständig zu zeigen, macht die Seite wieder zu einer “gewöhnlichen” Blog-Startseite. Daher werden sie auf www.webanhalter.de nur mit einem Auszug angezeigt. Und es werden so auch nur die beiden aktuellsten Artikel angezeigt. Der besseren Übersicht halber werden sie mittels CSS-Anweisungen auch nebeneinander positioniert. 1 2 3 <?php $top_query = new WP_Query("showposts=2"); ?> <?php while($top_query->have_posts()) : $top_query->the_post(); $do_not_duplicate = $post->ID; ?> Obiger Query fragt die zwei aktuellsten Artikel ab. Die Benennung top_query ist wichtig, da im weiteren Verlauf nochmals die letzten Artikel, allerdings ohne den Textauszug (excerpt), abgefragt werden. 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 <div style="width:47%; float:left; margin-right:2%;"> <h3><a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></h3> <div class="main group"> <?php the_excerpt(); ?> </div> </div> <?php endwhile; ?> Letzte Artikel ausgeben ohne die schon präsentierten Sollen nun die weiteren aktuellen Beiträge ausgegeben werden, könnte man eigentlich obigen Code verwenden und nur den Parameter ändern. Zusätzliche Informationen zur Seite, wie bspw. bei den Artikeln, muss sie hier nicht bieten. Wie im ersten Teil beschrieben, erstellt man dazu eine PHP-Datei, benennt sie als sidebar2.php und lädt sie in den Ordner des Themes seiner WordPress-Installation.
