Facebook and twitter Basics: Newbie Social Networking skills

Now, I am listening to Adam Urbanski, Mari Smith and Carrie Wilkerson on a phone call as I started to write this blog post. I get some very basic things that I did not get before. I now get the big picture. That is why it is so important to go to such events. You get to see yourself as part of the marketplace and share ideas. I only met one person that I would consider a competitor and she is an awesome lady that I learnt a lot from. So, no threat there in any way shape or form. Also, she learnt a lot from me. I get that I am an Internet marketer because I have a website and I am trying to sell my goods and services online. I have met so many other people online that do not get this very key point. My online relationships are as sacred as my offline relationships. You maximize social networking like twitter and Facebook by approaching it this way: 1.  You have entered into the room at a cocktail party (twitter and Facebook); 2.  You say hello to others (add or invite followers), 3.  Read their business card (click on their website on twitter and see what they are about; read their bio on Facebook and be interested in them) 4.  Notice the few that you are interested in taking your knowledge of them to the next level (have a conversation with them) 5.  Maintain a relationship with them (keep exchanging notes on Facebook and twitter - respond to them. 6.  Be interested and be interesting (share information and goodies with them.) 7.  Appreciate your sacred relationship with them (do not pimp followers out or ignore them or take them for granted in any way); 8.  Don’t just walk up to someone at a party and ask them for a job (do not sell something to them immediately. Give something first and infuse your communication with a lot of good vibes, quotes, interesting things you are doing. Let your sales tweets or updates on Facebook be one out of ten as a good rule of thumb.) 9.  Introduce your newly met friends with one another so you can have more connections and interaction (connect your Facebook and twitter accounts so that you are consistent and you save time). 10. Be polite and say hello and goodnight to those at the cocktail party (say good morning and good night on twitter and Facebook and tell us what is going on in your life. It makes you more human. 11.  Take your conversation to the next level. Plan to see each other again. (Connect in real life with some of your connections on Facebook and twitter by going to Tweetups and Meet ups. Better yet, make one happen.) 12.  Celebrate your new friends lives with them. Make a note of people’s birthdays and wish them “Happy Birthday.” (Facebook will tell you your friend’s birthdays. Do not miss out on that. Be sure to wish them blessings on those special days.) Sometimes it is easier to connect with other people when it is only in 140 characters and not a long drawn out conversation. Kudos to Ashton Kutcher for taking the time to tell, @greenboxyny on twitter of Environmentally Conscious Organization (e.c.o.), Incorporated, that her disposable pizza box that is perforated and breaks into four serving plates was “smart.” What I loved about this story that I heard on ABC’s 20/20 TV show, is that e.c.o., Incorporated is innovative. One of the owners, a recent MBA graduate, could not get a job on wall street and so, she got creative and designed this pizza box and is thriving in this this economy. Why did you and I both not think of that before she did? And using Twitter? From that single tweet, she got a lot of attention and now The Green Box has been the subject of various news segments and newspaper articles, and has been featured in hundreds of internet blogs and has been the talk of social networking sites around the world. The video has also been viewed half a million times on youtube. That could be you? How are you using social networking to redefine your values and the way you approach your entrepreneurship?

Dopo aver conquistato qualche settimana fa la copertina del Time con relativo articolo, twitter inizia pian piano a riscontrare attenzione anche dai media italiani. Oggi, su Corriere.it, c’è un bell’articolo di Massimo Gaggi: “La rivoluzione di twitter manda in affanno i media“. twitter non è solo cazzeggio per rispondere alla domanda “What are you doing?”, ma è un servizio di informazione utile in tempo reale: Ma quando il jet della US Air am­mara sul fiume Hudson o quan­do c’è il terremoto a Los Ange­les, la notizia arriva coi messag­gi di twitter molto prima che sugli schermi della CNN o sui terminali dell’Associated Press: un cambiamento che co­stringe i giornalisti a dotarsi di una nuova «cassetta degli at­trezzi » per affrontare rivoluzio­ni tecnologiche che stanno cambiando il modo di fare in­formazione. Poi arriva la rivolta in Iran e scopri che, con i corrisponden­ti stranieri messi alla porta dal regime degli ayatollah, twitter diventa l’unico vero canale di informazione su quello che sta accadendo nel Paese: migliaia di ragazzi armati di cellulare che trasmettono brevi messag­gi e immagini della sommossa e della repressione. If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.As the twitter vs Facebook content battle continues and with the iPhone 3Gs playing both sides the war shifts to multimedia content. In recent weeks we have seen audio iPhone apps such as Tweetmic and Facemic released in the app store both providing the ability to send recorded messages to there respected social network. Now that we have the iPhone 3Gs which makes it easy record video, two new apps are available to send video to both twitter and Facebook from your iPhone. One is called Tweet Reel and the other is called Video Up. I haven’t tested either one of the video apps yet but they both look interesting. I’m wondering how well video up will do after the new Facebook app is released that will have video uploading features built in as well. As for me, I’m currently using Posterous to send audio and video to both Twitter, Facebook and my blog at the same time. Another video iPhone app I’m waiting to see upgraded for iPhone 3Gs is the 12seconds app that will allow you to send short videos to both platforms. How are you sending audio and video to twitter and Facebook? Als ich gestern ein Artikel über den Hack vom Admin Bereich geschrieben habe, hat mir das Design auch sehr gut gefallen, und ich dachte, es ist nur für die Administratoren so, aber heute sehe ich, dass dies auch bei mir in twitter und bei jedem anderen so ist. Oder ist dass schon lange so? Also gestern sah es bei mir noch normal aus. Aber heute, endlich! Neues Design, super Design, mit JS Boxen, Suche integriert genauso wünschte ich es mir! Hier ein Screenshot: (Bei klick vergrößert sich das Bild) Das beste ist, dass auch die twitter Suche direkt in die Sidebar integriert ist, die neue Suche hat 3 Vorteile: Nicht immer die Suchseite besuchen (search.twitter.com) Neue URL Struktur: twitter.com/#search?q=SUCHBEGRIFF “Save this Search”, diese finde ich geil Ich denke, das Design wird von Zeit zu Zeit geändert, aber so gefällt mir das Design wirklich!

According to Tubemogul, twitter is referrring some of the most engaged video viewers on the web: …we recorded a sample of 6,763,690 video streams referred by links from Digg, Facebook and Twitter. The results? On average, audiences clicking on video links from twitter watch a video 36.91% longer than viewers referred by Facebook and 49.98% longer than viewers referred by Digg. In fact, this is one of many books on the subject of using twitter for marketing. Just looking at the search results on Amazon for twitter hurts my eyes. If you have enough presence on Twitter, you’ll start to notice that a lot of the people who follow you are professional marketing people who have a big user following. If you follow them, you’ll receive a stream of updates on all the ways they believe that you can acquire new followers and make everyone love you and blah blah blah. As strange as it sounds given their invisibility in the real world, marketing types are probably the most overrepresented demographic on Twitter. I don’t blame them. To them (and really to anyone else who stops and thinks about it), twitter is a way of directly talking to people in an attempt to exert some sort of influence. In addition to using twitter to communicate with friends, users post stuff that they think their followers will find interesting. Marketing people recognized this behavior immediately, so they decided to jump onto twitter and use it to their advantage. Immediately, the influence of these people can be felt as a massive annoyance to anyone who tries to use twitter for something aside from acquiring followers. A lot of people send automated direct messages to people who they just started to follow because some marketing shlub made them think it was a good idea. AutoDMs are some of the most annoying things in the world. A lot of the people I communicate with on Twitter, including myself, have a standing policy that if we get autoDMs from your account, we will immediately cease to interact with you. And that’s not to mention the content that gets sent out by these people. When I tweet a Techgeist article, sure, that’s advertising, but nothing so blatant as “11 Ways to Improve X, Y, and Z,” which always encourages you to go out and buy some book or pay for some service. I can’t imagine that there’s much of an audience for barrages of advertising, yet there are people whose entire twitter identities is nothing but ads. In a way, the fact that there are so many books on the subject of twitter shows just how much more growing twitter has to do: it’s like the mainstream flocking to the internet has begun again, only this time it’s a flocking to Twitter. I suspect that a few years down the line, we’ll see the marketers begin to recede back into the waters from whence they came, but for now it’s really annoying. Perhaps the most ironic part of all this is that having millions of people proclaiming themselves marketing experts only serves to harm the businesses of those who are actaully good at marketing. Sure,  I’d be really interested to learn about marketing on twitter effectively, but like hell am I going to pay attention to any self-proclaimed guru. Blog FeLiPe RM Internet, Blogs, Diseño, Tecnología y Humor… Blog Acerca de twitter vs Plurk Es lo que muchos de nosotros estamos actualmente viviendo (sobre todo los “early-adopters”). ¿Plurk o Twitter? Yo creo que no hay que ser extremista y decir uno u otro, sino, depende del uso que se el dé a uno o a otro. Es decir, twitter es más para conversaciones serias, con gente conocida, para hacer negocios, y hacer un microblogging. Mientras que en Plurk, la conversación es más generalista, en el mensaje que haces, se pueden meter gente que no conoces de nada, gente interesante, pero que finalmente pueden aportar muchas cosas y a veces nada (eso sí, hay que dedicarle mucho más tiempo que a twitter). Yo veo más útil Plurk para “micro-chatear” mientras se ve un partido, una carrera de F1, una quedada, etc…, para así tener las conversaciones más ordenadas, y para poco más. Creo que twitter tiene potencial, pero si no le empieza a buscar como rentabilizarlo, y sacarle más funcionalidades, muchísima gente se va a cansar y se van a ir a Plurk. Aunque yo creo que con el paso del tiempo, la gente que se vaya a Plurk también se terminarán cansando de este último. ¿Mi consejo? Usarlos con moderación para así no cogerles manía. Eso si, recordad que ambos servicios son una forma de procrastinar inimaginable.
