Juli 2009 Vor rund zwei Wochen veröffentlichte die deutsche Softwareschmiede The Soulmen die langerwartete Version 2 von Ulysses. Die Applikation richtet sich seit langer Zeit an den „kreativen Textarbeiter“ und hat auf dem Mac das Genre der Autorensoftware etabliert. Mittlerweile gibt es eine ganze Reihe solcher Schreibprogramme, die sich um die Bedürfnisse von Schriftstellern, Journalisten und Bloggern kümmern wollen. In den nächsten Wochen werde ich einige dieser Programme hier vorstellen. Aber zuerst sollten wir uns um die Grundlagen kümmern, denn ich höre gewisse Leser schon fragen: Schreibprogramme? Autorensoftware? Was soll das überhaupt? Programme wie Scrivener, StoryMill und eben Ulysses werden gerne als überflüssige Geldmacherei angesehen. Als hinterhältige Methode, untalentierten Autoren die Euros, Dollars, Franken, was auch immer aus der Tasche zu ziehen. So nach dem Motto: „Sieh her! Mit diesem Programm schreibst Du endlich vernünftige Texte! Und mit Funktion [Blubber] und dem Modul [Bla] ist Dir der Erfolg garantiert!” Die Skepsis ist verständlich. E.T.A. Hoffmann konnte seine Bücher problemlos mit Stift und Papier entwerfen, Schreibmaschinen soll es auch noch geben, und nun ja, Word? Pages? Vielleicht gar nur ein Editor wie Textmate? Sollte das nicht reichen? Natürlich reicht das. Aber wer oft am Computer schreibt kennt auch die damit verbundenen Probleme: Man werkelt an einem längeren Text und hat einen Einfall für eine andere Szene. Wohin damit? Und wo lege ich Charakter-Blätter ab, Beschreibungen von Lokalitäten, Recherchematerialien? Entweder, man pflastert seinen Schreibtisch mit Fresszetteln zu oder erstellt ein paar Dutzend Dateien auf der Festplatte. Manche Autoren verwenden als Sammeltopf für solche Informationen zum Beispiel DevonThink oder Journler. So weit, so gut. Aber wenn man schon digital unterwegs ist, weshalb nicht gleich die Geschichten oder Artikel am Computer planen? Also kommt noch ein Programm à la OmniOutliner hinzu, und schon hat man beim Schreiben drei Programme offen. Dann wohl noch einen Browser – Wikipedia scheint die Hauptquelle für viele, viele Artikel zu sein, aber ich schweife ab – und gegebenenfalls das OS X Wörterbuch. Ist ein Ansatz, aber insbesondere auf Laptops führt das doch zu einigem Exposé-Gehampel. Und eben hier verspricht Schreibsoftware eine bequemere Lösung. Etwas geeky ausgedrückt: Ulysses, Celtx und Konsorten sehen sich als IDE für Autoren. Man arbeitet in einer Applikation, oft in einem einzigen Fenster und hat alles griffbereit. Sei es Brainstorming, Planung oder gar (Schock!) das Schreiben selbst: Alles in einem Programm. Dazu vielleicht noch die eine oder andere Spezialfunktion, die einem Schreiberling das Leben erleichtern soll. Notizen, Quellmaterial, versionierte Entwürfe, Gehirnabfall? Alles in einer (Pseudo-) Datei. Kurz gesagt: Schluss mit der Zettelwirtschaft! Zurück zu Ulysses. Die ehemaligen Blue-Tec-Mannen erschufen mit diesem Programm vor über sechs Jahren die wohl erste Umsetzung einer idealen Schriftsteller-IDE auf dem Mac. „Ideal“ im Sinne von „Utopie“, sollte ich hinzufügen. Das Programm führte mit der Zeit Funktionen ein, die schon mal für den einen oder anderen Hype sorgten. Stichwort „Schreibmaschinen-Vollbild-Modus“ – eine Funktion, mit der sogar Apple ihr iWork-Paket beworben hat. Die neue Version 2 ist die konsequente Weiterentwicklung der Philosophie hinter Ulysses. Was jedoch insbesondere in einem Punkt für viel Geschrei unter potentiellen Nutzern sorgt. Aber dazu dann später mehr. software zum Geldverdienen im Internet – OpenSorce-Lösung für Kundenbetreuung 29. Mai 2009 von Siegmar Wer im Internet Geld verdienen möchte, braucht ein ausgereiftes System. Anfragen von Kunden und Interessenten müssen sauber abgearbeitet werden. Wer einen guten Support bietet, wird weiterempfohlen. Wer hier nur auf Email-Lösungen zurückgreift, wird bald den Überblick verlieren. Das ist meine Erfahrung.Um dieses Problem in den Griff zu bekommen, eignen sich Support- System zur Kundenbetreuung. Wer hier nach passenden Lösungen sucht, wird fast nur teure Softwareangebote finden. Ein befreundeter Webmasterkollege setzt hierfür das Programm Ticket Desk Pro ( http://www.ticketdeskpro.com ) ein. Diese Lösung ist jedoch nur in Englisch verfügbar und kostet aktuell 67$. osTicket – Open Source Help Desk Lösung Ich selbst habe nun eine sehr interessante Alternative gefunden. Es ist eine kostenfreie OpenSorce-Lösung. osTicket ( http://www.osticket.com ) ist eine Web- basierende Support Ticket Lösung. In der Standardversion jedoch auch nur in Englisch verfügbar, im Forum auf der Seite habe ich jedoch auch eine deutsche Übersetzung gefunden. Ich habe mir unter http://www.SiegmarBuehrle.de/support die deutsche Version mal installiert und ausgiebig getestet. Ich bin absolut zufrieden und kann die Lösung uneingeschränkt empfehlen. Den einzigen Fehler den ich bis jetzt gefunden habe ich, dass einzelne Umlaute nicht korrekt dargestellt werden – hiermit kann ich jedoch gut leben. Wenn ich mal etwas Lust dazu habe, werde ich die Punkte dann einfach selbst ändern. osTicket - Kundenportal Die Voraussetzungen zum Einsatz von osTicket sind ein Webserver mit PHP 4.3 (oder besser) und eine MySQL-Datenbank 4.1 (oder besser). Die Installation war sehr einfach und war innerhalb von 10 Minuten abgeschlossen. Im Admin und Supportbereich hat man die Möglichkeit umfangreiche Einstellungen vorzunehmen. Es besteht die Möglichkeit, die Bereich Administration und Support zu trennen. Dadurch haben Sie die Möglichkeit, den Support für Ihre Produkte an einen externen Anbieter auszulagern. Im Administrationsbereich können neben Grundeinstellungen zur Steuerung des Programms, selbst die Emailtexte für die Kunden und die Supportmitarbeiter in Vorlagen festgelegt werden. Es lassen sich unterschiedliche Abteilungen (Allgemeine Anfragen, Kundenanfrage, Buchhaltung, …), Supporter (Mitarbeiter einer Abteilung) sowie Aufgabenbereiche definieren. Über diese Einstellungsmöglichkeiten lassen sich vorhandene Unternehmens- und Projektstrukturen sehr einfach implementieren. Im Supportbereich werden unter anderem die vorliegenden Tickets dargestellt. Hier hat man nicht nur Zugriff auf die „offenen” Tickets, sondern kann auch sehr schnell auf „geschlossene” Tickets zurückgreifen. Sehr interessant ist auch die Möglichkeit, zum Aufbau einer eigenen FQA-Datenbank. Hier haben Sie beim Aufbau eines neuen Projektes die Möglichkeit, alle Kundenanfragen selbst zu beantworten und das Wissen in der FQA-Datenbank abzulegen. Wenn Sie dann den Supportbereich abgeben möchten, steht allen Supportmitarbeitern Ihr komplettes Wissen übersichtlich zur Verfügung. osTicket Admin und Support Backend Warum mir osTicket so gut gefällt: osTicket ist eine umfangreiche und sehr kostengünstige Lösung. Sie software bietet eine gute Basis, später den gesamten Support auszugliedern, so dass ich mich zu 100 Prozent  auf Produktentwicklung und Marketing konzentrieren  kann. Ich werde in allen meinen Projekten den Link auf mein Support-System einbauen und bin dann mal auf den Praxiseinsatz gespannt. Kurze Erklärung warum die AOL Software überhaupt benutzt wird: AOL war......zum Problem mit der AOL Software und dem Philips SNB5600 WLAN......super, solange man die AOL Software nicht startet…wenn man die jedoch......mehr. Wer die AOL software kennt, wird mir sicher raten garnicht darüber zu berichten bzw. diese unter keinen Umständen zu installieren oder AOL überhaupt zu benutzen. Das ist mir aber fast egal, ich machs trotzdem - Zumindest das mit dem Berichten Kurze Erklärung warum die AOL software überhaupt benutzt wird: AOL war einfach der billigste Anbieter für den Internetzugang mit ISDN - Damals, als es noch kein DSL gab. Da gab es so geile Schülertarife, wo man für wenige D-Mark bzw. Euros jeden Tag zwischen 14.00 und 18.00 Uhr online sein konnte. Aus diesen Zeiten stammt also der AOL Zugang, inzwischen aber mit Ultra-Highspeed-55.000 DSL! Leider nicht, es reicht ebenso für 384kBit/s :-/ Okay, nun aber zum Problem mit der AOL software und dem Philips SNB5600 WLAN Router. Wie bereits beschrieben, habe ich den SNB5600 als DSL WLAN Router gekauft und wollte damit meine Fritzbox und den Switch unterm Tisch ersetzen, klappte aber nicht, da kein DSL Modem integriert ist…hätte man weniger auf die Werbeschriften und mehr auf die Detail geachtet, wäre das Problem gleich aufgefallen… Nun ist also nur der Switch ersetzt, dafür gibts jetzt aber auch WLAN Bei der Konfiguration des WLAN Routers habe ich alle Daten so eingegeben, dass diese Gerät die Internetverbindung aufbaut und hält, sodass jeder Rechner im Netzwerk nur den Browser seiner Wahl öffnet und schon im Internet surfen kann. Das funktioniert auch super, solange man die AOL software nicht startet…wenn man die jedoch nutzt, dann geht nix mehr. Der Rechner mit der software hat dann noch ca. 15 Sekunden Internet und ist danach offline Eine Lösung dafür habe ich in unterschiedlichen Konfigurationen gesucht und sogar gefunden. Das Problem bei dem Gerät bzw. der software ist, dass die AOL software sich eine extra Verbindung erstellen möchte, welches aber von der Routerfirewall nicht gern gesehen ist. Ausserdem erkennt die AOL software das Modem (die Fritzbox) über den Router hinweg auch nicht so, wie es eigentlich möglich sein sollte. Folglich musste die vorgenommene Konfiguration dahingehend geändert werden, dass die Fritzbox nun doch wieder als Router mit alles Zugangsdaten konfiguriert ist. Also grundsätzlich alles so wie vor der Anschaffung des SNB5600. Beim Philips WLAN Router wurden die Einträge für Internet PPPoE wieder entfernt und das Gerät einfach auf Repeater gesetzt. Diese Konfiguration kannte ich zwar bisher nur von WLAN Geräten, die einfach nur ein Signal weiterleiten bzw. die Reichweite erhöhen sollen, aber man lernt ja nie aus… Das wichtige ist, dass es jetzt mit der AOL software und dem SNB5600 klappt. Es gibt keine Verbindungsabbrüche nach dem Starten der software und alle andern Rechner können genau wie vorher im Netz surfen. Das WLAN ist noch nicht getestet, aber ich bin ja hoch optimistisch, dass auch das noch läuft Wer also AOL in Verbindung mit dem Philips SNB5600 WLAN Router nutzen möchte, der muss das Gerät auf “Repeater” stellen und den angeschlossenen Router direkt mit den DSL Zugangsdaten versorgen! I have been allured by the Creative ZenMicro for its relative high-finite sound quality and cost efficiency, last but not the least, the free PlayForSure DRM WMA service provided by Arlington County library. Eventually, I got a refurbished white Creative ZenMicro. It works as a charm with Amarok in my Gentoo Linux, you even don’t bother to rebuild the kernel since libnjb works in the user land. Still two things bother me: the Chinese Id3v2 tag support and MTP support. After checking their web site, I start the nightmare to upgrade the firmware. According to their knowledge base, the firmware upgrade utility only works on Windows XP with SP1 and explicitly Windows Media Player 10. What the hell of this? Does Creative Lab have a special promotion for Windows XP sale? Unfortunately, I have one Windows Vista Business and one Windows 2000 Professional. I downloaded almost 100M software and install them in my two Windows platform, failed, fair enough. I just wondered how the Windows user could stand such a bloated software just for music transfer. Thanks for my roommate, he has one Windows XP Home, one Windows XP Professional as the playgrounds. Unfortunately, the firmware upgrade still failed without any error message, the application just hang there, no response. I eventually call the Creative Labs. The reception felt sorry about my situation, and offered me to replace the device if I would like to pay the shipping, round trip, via either FedEx or UPS. And she was so kind to remind me I should do this ASAP in the one month’s warranty. What a crappy company! UPDATE: Creative refund the full price with tax at the end since Creative ZenMicro is out of stock. “software is hard.” reads the quote from Donald Knuth that opens Scott Rosenberg’s Dreaming in Code. Even the development of Gelman is not smooth as I expected. Think big, but not fancy Gelman is a hobby project to scratch personal itch, at the same time it acts as the playground to learn django and dojo. Therefore, it is extremely difficult to resist the temptation for some bling-bling but not essential features, which are called “free feature” in the industry. For example, the fancy django-registration plug-in. It will be cool to integrate a ring-and-whistle registration module, but do I really need this module since I am probably the only user/administrator of this web application, why bother to waste effort in registration? Deodorize the smell It is quite annoying to work on a bad structured code base with misleading name convention. Eventually, I decided to re-organize the layout of the source code, and moved out from Google Code to Assembla, since the latter provides the Trac support for online source browser and ticket support. Some other changes include: Rename library as bookshelf Move the core functionality for book/add to file/add Redesign and develop (in progress) the MassAdd functionality for files in server’s incoming Find a formal way What make Gelman stands out is his admin interface, 60% of its functionalities are only available to administrator. When working with admin module, we should play the game of default admin. Eventually, I may have to copy the code from admin module for the sake of security and behavior consistency. In this situation, the Django Book cover what is on the table, but not under the table. Here is just a snapshot of current progress, the MassAdd. Would you spend money on utility software? What about ENSO? March 9th, 2007
I can hear people saying ‘NO’, and ‘HELL NO’ for the second question. Hey I totally agree with the first, but when it comes to ENSO, well I could argue otherwise! First of all, for those who are not familiar with ENSO, it’s a software by Humanized that currently encompasses a program launcher and universal spellchecker/dictionary. Actually each one of those is sold separately. I gave quite a detailed overview of ENSO in a previous post, so read that if you want to find out what’s quite different and interesting about this software. But if you want to know whether the software is really worth buying, then read on. Last week, my 30-days trial period for ENSO has expired. Honestly, I’ve gotten used to it during this period. But I didn’t want to make the decision to purchase it until I’m damn sure that I can’t go without it. I said fine, let’s have another 30-day trial period, only this time without ENSO’s services. That didn’t work out too well. I gave in and purchased ENSO Launcher couple of days ago. My friends thought I was crazy to shell out 20 bucks for a utility software even though there are several other free alternatives. Truth be told, I did my homework; I have tried most of the recommended alternatives during this period, notably a program called Launchy. Google Desktop was another viable alternative, even though it’s not meant to be a program launcher, but more of a desktop search engine. However none of them really hit the spot, for me. So why ENSO? Two simple reasons: It prevents me from switching mental context. It stays out of my way. Let’s explore this a bit further by contrasting it to the alternatives I’ve considered: Google Desktop is cool. It’s free. It indexes your whole computer and brings you relevant results within a second. With some tweaking, you can get to be completely hidden and only come up with a search box when you double-tap the Ctrl key. However, its shortcomings as a program launcher are twofold: It returns more results than I need for a simple program launch, which is quite distracting (see point 1). If I type ‘Word’ for instance, the first result entry is ‘Microsoft Office Word 2007 – Start Menu’ but then there are 10 other entries below with the word ‘Word’ either in the filename or in the contents. It comes up right in the center of my screen with no way to move it. That’s right where I’m usually working with something. (see point 2) Google Desktop, check. (Note: I still use it for searching though) Launchy, on other hand, was the closest I’ve come to replacing ENSO if it weren’t for one simple problem: it’s stupid! First of all, if I type ‘Word’ in it, the first place to look for results is obviously my start menu because that’s where you’d find programs I would want to launch frequently. It doesn’t do that (see point 1). Second of all, it won’t go away by itself. If you bring it up, then you gotta hit ESC if you no longer need it. It won’t go away by itself if you change the focus to a different application. I’m sorry, but for me, that was a deal breaker (see point 2). Launchy, check. Reasons applied to ENSO Now let’s see how ENSO won me over by applying the above two points: When you hit Caps-Lock, ENSO’s semi-transparent welcome message is shown in the upper-left corner of the screen. As you type a command, the text goes right underneath it and the results (if it’s an ‘Open’ command) are shown below as well. Case in point: it stays out of my way! Furthermore, ENSO’s results are minimal and most of the time relevant to what I’m trying to do. Case in point: it prevents me from switching mental context by not forcing me to think too deeply on which choice to go with, as in the case with Launchy and Google Desktop. Did I mention ENSO’s freakin’ stylish? The beautiful and simple typography with the semi-transparent backgrounds that ENSO sports right out of the box are simply gorgeous! It’s also minimal (no borders and stuff) so it will do little less to distract you from whatever it is you’re doing. One more reason I’m not ashamed to admit it, but part of my decision to purchase ENSO was based on supporting Humanized, the company who made ENSO possible, and the work they’re doing in the software usability department. I’m a regular reader of their weblog and, having keen interest in software usability, I’m always impressed by their thoughts, methodologies and their ambitions to “making our computing life simpler, more peaceful, and more productive”.
