« Negotiations | Main | Many Colors » 10 Ways to Support Charity Through social Media By Drew | July 14, 2009 This post is a collaboration between Mashable’s Summer of social Good charitable fundraiser and Max Gladwell’s “10 Ways” series. The post is being simultaneously published across more than 100 blogs. The post content is open source so I have added my own little touches to each of these suggested ways of supporting charity as I have done so with this blog on many occasions. social media is about connecting people and providing the tools necessary to have a conversation. That global conversation is an extremely powerful platform for spreading information and awareness about social causes and issues. That’s one of the reasons charities can benefit so greatly from being active on social media channels. But you can also do a lot to help your favorite charity or causes you are passionate about through social media. Below is a list of 10 ways you can use social media to show your support for issues that are important to you. If you can think of any other ways to help charities via social web tools, please add them in the comments. If you’d like to retweet this post or take the conversation to Twitter or FriendFeed, please use the hashtag #10Ways. 1. Write a Blog Post Blogging is one of the easiest ways you can help a charity or cause you feel passionate about. Almost everyone has an outlet for blogging these days — whether that means a site running WordPress, an account at LiveJournal, or a blog on MySpace or Facebook. By writing about issues you’re passionate about, you’re helping to spread awareness among your social circle. Because your friends or readers already trust you, what you say is influential. Recently, a group of green bloggers banded together to raise individual $1 donations from their readers. The beneficiaries included Sustainable Harvest, Kiva, Healthy Child, Healthy World, Environmental Working Group, and Water for People. The blog-driven campaign included voting to determine how the funds would be distributed between the charities. You can read about the results here. You should also consider taking part in Blog Action Day, a once a year event in which thousands of blogs pledge to write at least one post about a specific social cause (last year it was fighting poverty). Blog Action Day will be on October 15 this year. I’ve written quite a few blog posts. I think some of my favorite ones about the charities that we support have to have been. Blogs, Brews Belly Laughs 2 Hug Your Kids Shopping Cart Experiment 2. Share Stories with Friends Another way to spread awareness among your social graph is to share links to blog posts and news articles via sites like Twitter, Facebook, Delicious, Digg, and even through email. Your network of friends is likely interested in what you have to say, so you have influence wherever you’ve gathered a social network. You’ll be doing charities you support a great service when you share links to their campaigns, or to articles about causes you care about. This way is okay and you can really help by posting links but I think you can do even better if you combine that with some sort of contest that you are running on your blog to raise awareness. Asking the participants to also post links gets the word out further. 3. Follow Charities on social Networks In addition to sharing links to articles about issues you come across, you should also follow charities you support on the social networks where they are active. By increasing the size of their social graph, you’re increasing the size of their reach. When your charities tweet or post information about a campaign or a cause, statistics or a link to a good article, consider retweeting that post on Twitter, liking it on Facebook, or blogging about it. Following charities on social media sites is a great way to keep in the loop and get updates, and it’s a great way to help the charity increase its reach by spreading information to your friends and followers. You can follow the Summer of social Good Charities: Oxfam America (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube) The Humane Society (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, MySpace, Flickr) LIVESTRONG (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr) WWF (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr) 4. Support Causes on Awareness Hubs Another way you can show your support for the charities you care about is to rally around them on awareness hubs like Change.org, Care2, or the Facebook Causes application. These are social networks or applications specifically built with non-profits in mind. They offer special tools and opportunities for charities to spread awareness of issues, take action, and raise money. It’s important to follow and support organizations on these sites because they’re another point of access for you to gather information about a charity or cause, and because by supporting your charity you’ll be increasing their overall reach. The more people they have following them and receiving their updates, the greater the chance that information they put out will spread virally. 5. Find Volunteer Opportunities Using social media online can help connect you with volunteer opportunities offline, and according to web analytics firm Compete, traffic to volunteering sites is actually up sharply in 2009. social media vs Institutions
So you think you’ve heard every perspective there is about social media and why companies should take notice? Think again. What I hope you understand after reading this is the true importance of social media and why most companies don’t have a clue as to what it means for their business, customers, employees and their competitors. Do You Deliver A Superior Customer Experience? The answer would be NO.  Chances are your company is NOT delivering a superior customer experience.  So is this what’s important about social media?  The answer is… Partially.  Now take a moment to consider just what comes between a traditional institution or organization and its customers.  You have a business with all the internal barriers that exists in all companies.  Now you have traditional media to communicate with your customers.  You rely on interruptions and disruptions to message to your clients and potential customers. Is it any wonder businesses are disconnected from their customers and their experiences? So What The Hell Does This Have To Do With social Media? social media, or let’s say the platforms created to support it, have created a slight paradigm shift (well maybe a bit more than slight).  In order to understand the enormity of this shift, you have to start looking at this phenomena a little differently — from a holistic point of view.  This new dynamic has created an environment where communication, collaboration and coordination exist without barriers.  It gives power to individuals to compete with institutions at a level unprecedented.  Institutional containment as we know it does not exist.  Market barriers no longer exist as we know it.  Let’s think about social media thru another lens.  Let’s look at it around “coordinating effort” or, from the basis any institution is created which is, getting things done: This Is What’s Important About social Media Institutions and organizations are wondering what to do about social media.  Policies are being written, consultants are being brought in to figure out how it can be used as a marketing channel.  Companies are missing what’s really important about social media and the platforms that support it — and here it is. Cooperation cost is the economic burden of coordinating effort.  Traditionally, the solution for coordinating effort was to create an institution.  More recently, since the cost for people to communicate with each other has fallen thru the floor, many are rethinking the system in which people communicate, collaborate and coordinate.  A great example of this is found on social networking platforms — platforms where coordination and communication are designed into the system.  Systems that allow group output without regard to traditional institutional models. Looking At Things In New Ways Is Hard To Do So what does this mean for the traditional institutional model?  It means that business leaders have to get comfortable with reviewing something very core — their original purpose — their existence.  In the end, I really think there are only 2 choices: Embrace and leverage communication, collaboration and coordination platforms.  Institutions and individuals alike all have access to a world of new opportunities.  This is difficult because it requires us to forget what we think we know and look at our circumstance dispassionatly and objectively.  It will also require us all to get involved and learn.  You can’t fake this Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance.  You might make the connection to the Kübler-Ross model’s 5 discrete stages of how people come to terms with dying.  This is how many institutions and organizations will come to terms with these new, communication, collaboration and coordination platforms. So here we are.  This is happening.  The ultimate importance of the web is coming to fruition.  It’s the ultimate communication platform.  It gives institutions the power to outdistance their competition by breaking down communication barriers between their employees, their customers and their suppliers.  We all have the power to create personal networks to coordinate effort and accomplish anything.  Thomas Friedman said “what can be done, will be done.”  There is nothing standing in our way.  Let’s get busy getting things done

What’s been really surprising? The demographic accounting for this massive growth: Baby Boomers are now dominating the social media scene, at least with respect to adoption rate. Facebook, once perceived as a college kid activity when it was restricted to college e-mail addresses, now has women over the age of 55 to thank for its most recent growth, according to Inside Facebook. In the past four months alone, this demographic has grown a staggering 175.3 percent. Additionally, the number of Facebook users over the age of 35 has nearly doubled in the past 60 days. Similarly and to an even greater degree, Twitter has been the beneficiary from the surge in traffic from the middle-age demographic. Recent research from comScore discovered that 45 to 54 year olds are 36 percent more likely than the average Twitterer’s age to visit the site, which makes them the largest indexing age group. Overall, the average age of all 10 million twitterers is over the age of 35. What does this mean for businesses? social media, no longer a playground for the young, has reached a critical mass for use as an effective marketing tool. Coupled with the decline of print media, social media is now on the precipice of assuming its throne as king of reaching the masses. The onus is on businesses to come up with clever ways to effectively utilize these social media tools to bring customers back and reach new potential customers. And that’s where we come in. Let us create or refine your social media strategy and maximize these tools for you.

social media in Deutschland
13. Mai 2009
Feb 22, 2009 Branding, Customer Service, Digital Marketing & Metrics, Marketing & Communication, PR, social Media, social networks
Image via Wikipedia Some time ago (before my sleepless night) Beth Harte had an interesting post “Is social media the Same as Marketing?” She questioned the term “social media Marketing” and said “the term social media marketing is not working for me: social media is about sharing and discussing information. It’s communications, not marketing.” What ensued in the comments section was not only a discussion of whether we could call social media - marketing or social media marketing; but a conversation examining the hierarchy and definition of Marketing itself. Now I am a little late jumping into the discussion - believe it or not this has been in the “drafts” for a long time! Define Marketing… Some comments on the post placed Communications squarely as part of marketing, others separated marketing and communications as though it were Church and State. The four Ps are mentioned, and then suggested they are an over simplification of marketing.  Marketing runs the show. Communications runs the show. One comment says PR, Sales, Marketing, and advertising are all different disciplines. Another says MarCom and PR are separate but collaborate more often. Still another commenter says that the P for Promotion stands for various communication techniques that would include PR, personal selling, advertising and publicity. Dale Evans, the author of social media an Hour a Day said “marketing is being defined more and more by what consumers experience and translate into shared content than it is by what a marketer has to say directly” Walter Pike quotes Peter Drucker: “The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well the product or service fits him and sells itself” As does Gabriel Rossi: “Because the purpose of business is to create a customer, the business enterprise has two–and only two–basic functions: marketing and innovation. Marketing and innovation produce results; all the rest are costs. Marketing is the distinguishing, unique function of the business.” And Laurie Broderick quotes the AMA “Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders.” the original market Ultimately, I don’t think it was necessarily the definition of marketing that was really in question, as all definitions brought up seem to recognize that the role of marketing is to have such solid understanding of their customer base that they strategically create, deliver, and appropriately price the products or services that this customer wants or needs. The original meaning came from literally going to the market to buy or sell goods. However,  I think confusion surrounding the definition comes when we assume that Marketing is just sales promotion. From the variety of comments it may be that the trouble is not defining marketing, but defining the roles that fall in the umbrella of marketing. In particular, the role of Communication and Marketing Communication.  My understanding has always been that MarCom would fall into “Promotion” - one of the simplified 4P’s of Marketing. In, my working experience it has always been that MarCom and PR have reported into Marketing.  I realize that is not always the case. Start with the Basics I took a look at Marketing using the perhaps over simplified 4ps (from my school days, many years ago!): The Marketing Mix: Product: Create a product that fits the needs or wants of your customer. Specifications of the goods or services should meet those requirements. Placement: Otherwise known as distribution and refers to the channel in which a product or service is sold. Pricing: This is the process marketers use to set the price of a product for market. Promotion: Textbook definition houses the following in this “P” - Advertising, Sales Promotion, Publicity, Personal Selling (Sales), Branding and other methods to promote product or service. It is this final P that seems to be the conundrum. Many businesses house these promotional roles in a variety of silos, others have them report directly to Marketing, still others work in tandem with the Marketing group, and of course still others outsource some of these roles to (a variety of ) agencies. Some include only those aspects that would be considered Marketing Communications: According to Wikipedia: “Marketing communication is concerned with the general behavior of an organization and the perceptions of the organization that are promoted to stakeholders through these touch points. The six areas usually associated in this representation are: Advertising, Public Relations, Promotions, Direct Marketing, Event Marketing, and New Media.” Others see MarCom as those “selling” aspects of Communication and leave PR out of the mix - seeing it as a Communication role. Needless to say it is all a bit of a mixed bag. We also need to examine Marketing as potentially having three additional Ps  (often associated with Service but could just as well work when talking about products): People: Any person coming into contact with customers can have an impact on overall satisfaction. In the customer’s eyes, the people are generally inseparable from the company and they can therefore highly affect the customer’s experience. Process: This is the procedures involved in providing a service (or product) which can be crucial to customer satisfaction. Example I buy a new Humidifier at Sears for my baby’s room, take it home and discover it sounds like an airplane jetting off so I take it back - but have to wander the store (with stroller and baby in tow) find an elevator and return it to hardware (where there is no immediate staff member to help) - despite numerous “Service” desks on the main floor. Physical evidence: To reduce the feeling of risk, thus improving success, it is often vital to offer potential customers the chance to see what a service (or product - especially key for online shopping) would be like. This is done by providing physical evidence, such as case studies, or testimonials. This could also refer, I suppose to the physical appearance of the product - the quality (or lack of) it promises. Is it Marketing vs Communication? After reading Beth’s post and the numerous comments I decided I would search about to figure out if there was a rule of thumb for the relationship between Marketing and Communication. It seems once again that there are two schools of thought. In fact- this leads to two possible hierarchies. 1) Marketing is the 1-way, the push, the sell. Communication is two-way. They are two different disciplines. Two different departments. 2) Communication is a piece of the marketing puzzle. It is the tactics used to market and to converse with the target market. Same discipline. Same department. Hmmm. Doesn’t help does it? While I believe that Communication must work in an integrated manner with the Marketing department, it seems that there are just as many that see the two as very separate pieces of the corporate puzzle.  If separate how do we ensure that all communications are sending the same messages? And, where does social media fit in - Marketing or Communications? Both? The Dreaded social Media Like Beth, I dislike the term social media Marketing. social media is defined as “primarily Internet- and mobile-based tools for sharing and discussing information among human beings. The term most often refers to activities that integrate technology, telecommunications and social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio.” (Wikipedia). The words “sharing” and “discussing” being an important factor to differentiate the “media” from other one-way channels such as television. The problems I see with the term “social media Marketing”: It is a name that in a few years will be dated. The web is, and has been for years - social. What happens when every site has some sort of forum, profile sharing, comment field etc. Will we still call it “social”? Or will that be rather redundant?I wonder if the even the term “media” too closely relates it to Television and Print media which are traditionally used in an interruption method which as of now is a method which has not worked for the web. and social media cannot be seen as only a tool to send simple outgoing marketing messages, as it also allows for two-way communication which can help an organization do much more. Amber Naslund said it best in the comments to Beth Harte’s post: “social media doesn’t just need to fit into marketing or public relations or other disciplines that are used to communicate. It’s also about customer service, technology and user experience, client relationship management, product and service innovation. It’s an undercurrent of so many more business touchpoints than we’ve ever seen, and I think that’s causing some consternation. In a good way, but it’s still hard.” social media is two-way, it is authentic conversation between customer and company - and in such should fall under Communication. However, look at it in another way it works to benefit marketing in a number of ways: Let’s just look at a few examples: Product Idea Generation and Product Innovation Sites such as My Starbucks Idea and

Do You Need to Feature Your Personal Picture in social Media? Opinions?
A business friend and I were discussing the numerous emails I receive about my use of “Yoda” as my avatar. I don’t use my own picture because I am a safety junkie. I am not sure how safe it is to feature my face nationwide and I am not real comfortable with it. There are a lot of freaky people out there and I just feel safer as Yoda, but does it make me appear unprofessional? What is your opinion? I am truly interested. social media is Great, But Are We Becoming Addicted?
You Might Be a Twitter Addict If you Twitter on the toilet, you might be a Twitter Addict I love the Internet and I don’t think I would be any good at my job if I wasn’t a “net junkie”. Constantly educating oneself is important in this industry and social media helps us do that. However, are we crossing the line of effectiveness and moving into addiction? Watching You I have a ton of work to do, but I do watch Twitter and Facebook when I have time. Both are great and can be educational and advertising tools, but I have to say some of you out there just can’t not be on Twitter or Facebook. I wonder, when do these people eat, sleep, see their loved ones or work? So they question is, is everyone talking about Twitter because it really is that great or is it because they are addicted to it? I have a friend, Scott, who had a great Facebook account and one day it was just gone. I called and was like, “Where are you?” and he said he realized that when he was planning parts of his day around what to do on Facebook it was time to delete the account and get back to work. I agree. Facebook is great and I have fun with it. I have made good money off of it too, but it shouldn’t replace the time I need to work or to spend real time with my family. Isolation My background is in Psychology, so I look at things from a different perspective sometimes. Working on the net is a great thing; I love it, but it can and does cause isolation. We are dealing with code on a screen, not real people. How healthy is it if all you do is deal with your computer? People need to interact with other people in real life to really be happy. Ever hear about the healing power of touch? People can’t touch your through a computer. I have a 17 year old and of course I have friends with kids the same age and what I see is a lot of kids living in their bedrooms talking with friends on MySpace and Facebook and other sites, but they aren’t going out much and they aren’t real happy. Sometimes you just have to walk away and go hang with a human…enjoy human touch (no jokes here people!). Information Overload When I was working towards my masters in counseling I had a class where we discussed information overload. The professor said something I will never forget…He said if someone from the time of Jesus came to live in this time they would be dead in two weeks. Why? Information overload. He said that driving a car and dealing with traffic alone is very stressful on the body, then add the radio, cell phones, kids talking…we are overstressed. Then we stop and perhaps we go in the house where the TV is on non-stop and the phone never stops ringing and we have emails to check, families to take care and we have to get dinner ready and the kids homework done…our brains never get to stop. We wonder why there is so much depression, anxiety and cancer. We have all learned to live and work under such stress and we don’t even realize it. You have phones, radios, TVs, iPods, email, Twitter, FriendFeed, cell phones and caffeine. (BTW, caffeine throws your body into the fight-or-flight response. Did you know that? If you drink it non-stop your body never gets to return to homeostasis) When does your body return to homeostasis? It doesn’t. I understand how critically important the Web is if a business wants to do well, but we have to keep things in check. We have to make sure we are not isolating ourselves and we aren’t putting our brains through more than it can handle. We also have to make sure that the social media we are involving ourselves in has a purpose and a good result and isn’t just an addiction because of loneliness, a desire to be the best or whatever else. For those of use that are involved in SEO, Internet Marketing and social media it is vitally important that we make sure we can walk away from the computer and live happily without (and even without your BlackBerrys, iPhones etc.) As of 3 PM every Saturday my computer goes off and I spend time with humans until Monday morning. Sometimes I do login to Facebook, but not often. I enjoy my time away and I rejuvenate myself. So there is another one of my thoughts I had in the shower…I am late for dinner now. GO relax and speak to a human. Melissa Fach – SEO Aware

Today, I gave a social media presentation for the American Marketing Association, Louisville’s monthly seminar. There was a great backdrop at the University Club, part of the University of Louisville where attendance was in upwards of 70. This was a bit difficult to gauge, as there was a wide range of social media knowledge in the room. Trying to keep from oversimplifying and getting too deep was the challenge for the day. Still, it seemed that folks left knowing something they had not before, as they were receptive. Presenting in the form of storytelling some examples of strategies seemed to work well. Thank you again AMA, I appreciated the opportunity to speak for you and had a great time and got to meet some great folks. As promised, here’s a copy of the presentation on SlideShare. You can download it from there too if you wish. | View | Upload your own If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed, or follow me on Twitter. Thanks for visiting!

Hier kommt BuzzStream in Spiel.
