music Mamas (dot) Com October 11, 2007 by Mommy Zabs   Filed under Featured, music Leave a comment I want to announce the birth of a new site called MusicMamas.Com! I’m a collaborative part of the team though I’m not sure I will get around to more than a couple posts a month. To read more about all of the fine ladies involved in this site click music Mamas. The founder, Kendra, Wife of famous rap duo Mars Ill, has this to say about the site, music is common thread that runs through our lives. It affects each of us differently, and we are changed or moved or humbled or healed. It infiltrates every moment of our day whether we want it to or not. It’s everywhere. And so are we. I had a notion to bring together like minded women from across the country who are in some way or another involved with music. Some of us have known eachother forever and others of us have met only once, but we share this common bond. I have a feeling this is going to be fun. And Im so glad these women have agreed to be a part of it. kendra Look for interesting interviews, articles on the evolution of music, favorites, links to new hot artists, and so much more to come in the next few months. Right now it is still partly work in progress but trust me, this will be a great site to be keeping tabs on. Go there and subscribe now! Tags: Enter Google AdSense Code Here Comments

By Alex Wilhelm on July 13, 2009 Who owns several giant platforms across multiple screens? Microsoft does! And who might be storming the burning keep and launching a streaming and download service? Microsoft! There are rumors swirling about Microsoft launching something new, the question comes down to what the hell are they thinking? Let’s do some scenarios: they launch a Zune branded streaming service on top of Zune Pass and the Zune store. If that is the case, then I am a happy camper. Run the odds of that happening? Zero. The only team in audio/visual that does not have a thumb firmly up their ass is the Zune team. This sounds like a different  project. If it is, I am going to send brownies to the Zune team. The Zune platform and hardware are brilliant: sleek designs, great UIs, and solid industrial tech behind the players. Now take a (probably) half baked streaming service and divest it from the brand and what do you have? Diddly-shit. My idea: take the service, brand it Zune, and give consumers a third way to buy music: Zune Pass, Al a Carte, and the streaming model like Spotify. All of sudden Zune is the strongest and most flexible store on the internet. In one swoop. Please please MSFT make this Zune.   I’ve been addicted to Lights for about half a year - strangely enough, I found out about her from a ridiculously gorgeous photoshoot that the Rogers Wireless magazine produced (I think it’s called UR magazine or something a tad cheese). Regardless, I’ve been hooked on her electro-pop-feelgoodandjumpy-tunes. Having played at Virgin Fest, playing countless amounts of shows around Canada and the States, and having a huge amount of press and record label interest in her, Lights has built something incredible, all stemming from her fabbo MySpace page.   She embraces neon colours, produces ear candy, and knows how to work a crowd. Oh, and ps - her video blogs are killa entertaining. Check out her newest vid “February Air” ‘low. Lenka - music in my ears

  I’m loving LENKA - she’s a hybrid of Feist and…something edgier. It’s happy-go-lucky, somewhat sappy, peppy, and right up my alley as of late. Check it out on blocmusic (look to your right hand side, puleeze). It’s so sing-along-able (an official measure of quality music). Click here to see her video for “The Show”.   Some other goodies that are new on release? Dido (same Dido-goodness, a bit more mellow though) and Eva Avila (you’ll recognize “The Music”) have some great new tracks as well. Ever feel like filling in the silence in your life with happiness / female easy listening? I do!   It isn’t fashion - but it inspires style.   Musically Yours, Gloria / urbanebloc.com SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Lenka - music in my ears", url: "http://www.urbanebloc.com/lenka-music-in-my-ears/" });

How To Create a Flash XML Playlist music Player
Submitted by Richard Darell on Sunday, 15 February 200946 Comments
Introduction I have gotten quite a lot of requests on different tutorials that my visitors would like to see on the site and it’s really exciting. I just wish I had the time to keep up with you and give you all what you want. But hang in there, I will get to “that” exact tutorial you’re waiting for. I just have to take them one at a time. This tutorial is a bit more complex than the other ones you can find on this site. Not necessarily harder, just a bit more code to pull it off. It will cover all the steps necessary to get a working Flash XML MP3 Player for your site or blog. Necessary skills are once again basic. Software’s used are: Adobe Flash, Photoshop and a simple word processor of your choice for setting up your play list. I am using “Notes” on windows just to simplify. Also some knowledge on how to use a ftp client to upload your player and music to your server is needed. PS: You can find a working example of the player at the bottom of this tutorial. Enjoy! Step 1 As usual we need some graphics that will make up our player user interface. There are a million ways you can design your player and only your creativity is the limit. I have decided to take a somewhat classic way of designing my UI for this tutorial player. What you should remember is to make several files. A file of each the buttons in their different states (i.e Hover, Press etc.) How many states you want your buttons to have is entirely up to you. The functions this player will have is: Play Button Stop Button Previous Song Button Next Song Button Volume Slider Loader Bar Information Window - Song Title, Artist Name & Time As you can see this player has all the necessary features to make any visitor appreciate the music you put on your site (remember: using copyrighted music without permission is a crime). Also important to remember is if you’re using the Window Glass Shine on your information window, save the shine layer separately so we can put in the labels underneath the glass for better effect. Here is my user interface design: Step 2 Time to set up our flash document. Open a new project and use and set the following settings in “Publishing Settings…” under “File” (CTRL+Shift+F12). Flash Tab: Version: Flash Player 9.0 Load Order: Bottom Up ActionScript Version: ActionScript 2.0 JPEG Quality: 100% Audio Stream: MP3, 160kbps, Stereo (this won’t affect the quality of the sound but I like to set it anyways) Audio Event: MP3, 160kbps, Stereo (this won’t affect the quality of the sound but I like to set it anyways) HTML Tab: Quality: Best There, now our publishing settings are set and it’s time to change some document settings. Open “Document Properties” and (if using the same dimensions as me on your user interface (182+102)) set the following: Title: “XML MP3 Player” Dimensions: 182 (width), 102 (height) Background Color: White (#FFFFFF) - (Optional, take what suits your interface best) Frame Rate:  30 Step 3 Now we’re going to set up our layers for the player. This time it’s a few more than usual. We need seven (7) layers this time so go ahead and add another 6 to the list. After doing so name your layers, top to bottom, “actions“, “shine“, “text fields“, “buttons“, “loader / progress“, “volume” and “background“. That should be the layers we are going to work with. Of course you can go ahead and add any other layers that you need to make your user interface more interactive. But for this one we only need these. Step 4 Let’s add our background to the setup. Go to “File” -> “Import” -> “Import To Stage…“. Your image should now be present on your stage. After your background image has been added to the stage make sure you align it correctly using you “Align” tool box to your right. Enable the “To Stage” button to your farthest right and then align it. This should but the background right where it’s supposed to be. Now you should have something looking like this: Step 5 Now, let’s add our little volume slider to the user interface.The first thing we have to do is to set the size of the movie clip itself that will hold our “Volume Slider”. So, let’s go ahead and create a rectangular shape using the tool box to the left. Make the rectangle fit the “Volume Bar” exactly. Should look like this (using red just to make it more visible for you. Will make it transparent later on so go ahead and use any color you like): Now, select the red rectangle you just created and choose “Modify” -> “Convert To Symbol…“. Use the following title and settings: Now we have our movie in the size that is needed for our “Volume Slider” to work as it is intended to. Now name (instance name) the movie clip “volume1“. Double click the newly created movie click. We now enter the movie clips inside so we can manipulate the red rectangle along with adding our “Volume Slider”. Select the red rectangle and once again choose “Modify” -> “Convert To Symbol“. This time use the exact same settings: Name the symbol “Slider“. We need to do this in order to be able to be able to manipulate the color of the red rectangle the way we want to. Set the instance name for our new symbol to “volBG“. After doing this, if not already selected, select the red rectangle and go to “Properties” at the bottom of your screen. There you will find a choice named “Color” as a roll down menu. In the roll down menu choose “Alpha” and set the amount to “0%“. This will make our red rectangle transparent and won’t be in the way of our slider or make the bar look weird. Time to add the “Volume Slider”.The little slider has been saved separately in Photoshop so we can interact with it and set the volume. While still in the movie clip let’s add the slider by importing it as usual using the “File” -> “Import” -> “Import To Stage...” procedure. When it’s imported position it all the way to the right on your “Volume Bar” to set the volume to maximum when the player is initiated. We need to create a movie clip out of our “Volume Slider” as well. So let’s repeat the “Modify” -> “Convert To Symbol…” and name it “Volume Controller“. Again using the same settings as we used previously. Remember, use the same layer as the red rectangle is on. No need to create a new layer. As instance name set it to “dragger“. You should now have something looking like this: Step 6 OK, we got our volume control graphics set up. Now it’s time to set up our loader bar/play progression bar. This will be done almost the same way so remember the “Convert To Symbol” procedure. Alright, let’s create the loader movie to begin with. Create a 168*2 pixel bar where the loader indicator is positioned on our user interface. Here’s how it looks like on my user interface: Now we have to convert this shape into a Movie Symbol again. Again, “Modify” -> “Convert To Symbol…“. Name it “Loader Bar” and set it to “Movie Clip“. Set the instance name to “loaderer“. When we have done this, double click on the newly created movie clip to get inside it. In here we’re going to set up our loader bar. The bar that will indicate how much of the song is loaded. What we need to do first is to create a new layer to

Thoughts on “Thoughts on music
http://aldoblog.com/2007/02/thoughts-on-thoughts-on-music/
...people have analysed Thoughts on Music in more detail than I......sell the majority of the music in the iTunes Store. (d)...
Aldoblog Michael Alderete’s Weblog « Harry Potter #7 shipping July 21st Upgraded to WordPress 2.1 » Thoughts on “Thoughts on Music” Posted 2 years, 5 months ago by Alderete On Tuesday, in an open letter Thoughts on Music, Steve Jobs responded (accidentally ;-) to my prior post calling on Apple to license FairPlay to other device makers. It’s a brilliant piece of writing, as all the best propaganda is, covering a lot of ground concisely and persuasively. Other people have analysed Thoughts on music in more detail than I care to; I’ll confine myself to three points. I agree with everything he wrote That doesn’t change my conclusion that I won’t buy any more content from the iTunes Store until I can play it on my Sonos and TiVo systems. I don’t care if the source of the issue is Apple or the record companies, I only care that I can’t play it on devices I own and enjoy using. If Steve is serious about offering non-DRM-wrapped content on the iTunes Store, there should be non-DRM-wrapped content on the iTunes Store There are non-big four labels ready to do away with DRM yesterday, including those behind artists like Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, and Avril Lavigne. Steve’s letter is currently undermined by the lack of any unprotected content on the iTunes Store. If he’s serious, that should change. That would put additional pressure on the big four labels to think about dropping DRM, as well as reduce pressure from the groups that are currently after Apple to open up FairPlay, redirecting it at the same big four. That seems like such a big win for Apple, I expect it to be their next move in this particular game. The “big four” have to change something The heart of Steve’s argument goes basically like this: (a) All DRM systems rely on secrets. (b) Once the secrets are known, it is possible, common, inevitable that the DRM will be broken, worldwide. ( c) If the DRM is broken, Apple is required by contract to rapidly fix it, or lose the ability to sell the majority of the music in the iTunes Store. (d) Licensing FairPlay means more people have the FairPlay secrets, which increases the risk of the secrets escaping. (e) The increase in risk is not acceptable, which is why Apple won’t license FairPlay. That’s a pretty strong argument. It’s hard to suggest that Apple should significantly increase their business risk to assist their competitors, by licensing Apple technology to let those competitors improve their products. Yeah, it would be good for customers too, but the current situation, as Steve points out, only causes problems for 3% of people’s content. It’s a trade-off, and it’s reasonable for Apple to come down on the side of Apple. The big four record companies are already suggesting that Apple is wrong and should work to license FairPlay. Fine. All they need to do is take ( c) above out of the equation. That’s something totally under their control, and if they are serious about wanting to see interoperability, instead of dropping DRM entirely as Steve suggests, then they need to put their lawyers were their mouthpieces are. As Roman Strauss said in Dead Again, I think this is all very far from over. As many of you know, this past week we traveled to Utah to visit my brother and his family and welcome the birth of my new nephew, Korban Kristopher Zyp.  It was a wonderful visit–Dutch and his cousin Jennika were able to play for hours, running around the lawn as my brother sprayed them with the hose, digging in the sandbox (Dutch digging while Jennika rocked her babydoll in Heidi’s infant seat–you cannot tell me boys and girls are wired the same at birth!), and sharing a peanut butter sandwich in the warm Utah sunshine. The first couple days were rough, though. After a crazy busy week, we left at 6pm, arrived in Ontario at 1:30am, and “napped” for a few hours–Heidi slept in a drawer (!) and we put two chairs together to form an enclosed bed for Dutch. The bathroom was so small you had to stand in the shower to close the door, and we were tired and dirty.  We got up at 7am, scarfed the Super 8 continental breakfast, and were back on the road by 8:30am.  When we arrived at Kris’s at 3pm we were overjoyed to see them…but a little tired and creaky after all six of us (my parents too) were crammed in our Honda for 800 miles. And when we arrived up at the Snowbird resort, and were surrounded by, well, snow, I was a little surprised. Somehow I’d envisioned a vacation of laying out in the sun by the pool all day.  It was in the 50s and there was snow everywhere. No sunbathing. Plus the altitude was so high and it was so dry, that the whole first day there I was feeling horrible.  THe four of us were in one room and neither of the kids could sleep well (we read that elevation sickness hits kids harder), which meant no sleep for mommy either.  Late Saturday night I told Jeff I wanted to fly home the next morning. And I wasn’t kidding. Obviously I was being a wimp. The next day we went to church, and taking time to worship our Lord, and be with my brother’s family, made it all better. Plus, we ended up just going down to their house every day (which was 30 degrees warmer!) and I got my fill of glorious sunshine.  Then Korban was born on Wednesday, and by the time we left, I chalked it up as one of the best vacations we’ve ever taken. But strange as this might sound, one of the hightlights of the whole vacation was the drive home.  We decided to go for it and do it all in one day–we left at 9am and got home at 11:30pm.  We gained an hour but stopped off at my brother’s for 1/2 hour, so about 15 hours or so in all.  About halfway through, Jeff handed me his ipod and headphones and suggested I just tune out the kids and listen to some music.  Ahh…glorious offer!  That is speaking my love language. So he read books to Dutch, juggled sippy cups and alphabet cookies, and made goo goo noises with Heidi will I propped my feet up on the suitcase next to me, leaned over to the window, and turned the volume up until I heard nothing but sweet, glorious worship music. Wow.  There is nothing like music.  For abour five hours I sat and watched the beautiful landscape.  The dark brown hills like sand, the winding river, the glorious green pastures rising and falling as we drove. The beautifully dilapitated barns and farmhouses, the thousands of cattle. And as we neared Portland, we saw the most glorious sunset I have ever witnessed. In fact because of traveling and because of the angle of the cliffs to the West, it made it appear as if the sun set and rose several times as we drove. It was an amazing phenomenon.  As I sat there, engrossed in the beauty, overwhelmed by the words of old hymns remixed by Page CXVI, tears streamed down my face.  What a beautiful God we serve!  I felt like I could almost feel that inexpressible joy that we will someday experience, when at last we see our glorious Creator face to face. When we join with all creation to sing Worthy is the Lamb.  I felt like in those five hours, tucked into the third row of our Honda Pilot, I had a life-changing retreat with my Jesus. Then Sunday.  Joel’s message was on…music.  He’s doing a series called Elements, basically going through the things we do on Sunday mornings and why we do them. Why we sing, teach, remember (communion), and give.  Why do we do what we do.  And this week’s message, on music, reminded me afresh how powerful it is when we make music and sing to our God. It isn’t for us. It’s for HIM. For His pleasure, His glory.  We sing, we bow, we lift our hands, as an offering to our God.  And what power there is in music!  I can’t even imagine how glorious it will be to worship our King for all eternity. Then came my birthday…and what did my husband get me? Speakers!  See, the speakers on my laptop don’t work, and we don’t have a stereo, so I never had any way to play music or sermons at home.  Well he got me speakers that I can plug into my laptop or his ipod (which I suspect may be handed down to me if he gets his birthday wish).  So tonight, after tucking the kids in bed, I lit a candle, drew a hot bath, and played my new favorite CXVI hymns again. How great is our God! And lastly, which may seem unrelated but isn’t, I read the remarkable blog, www.deathisnotdying.com.  As I read the amazing words of Rachel, who is dying of terminal cancer, I wept and wept, unable to even fathom the pain of leaving one’s husband and children behind.  What all this reminded me of is that we are wise to remember how unthinkably short this life truly is.  Our life is a breath.  It is two seconds long, as John Piper says.  And while unbearable sorrow will be ours as long as we walk this earth, heaven awaits us. Glorious heavenly bliss awaits us all who know and love our Lord Jesus.  And it seems that music takes us there in a way few other things can. Worship takes us there.  Worship gives us the tiniest little foretaste of heaven. Whets our appetite for the glorious worship service at the marriage supper of the Lamb.  I pray that we would discover again the beauty of music, of singing worship music to our savior, of letting His praises transport our souls to the heavenly realm, giving us perspective we so desperately need. There’s nothing like music to take us there. The things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace. – Check out www.pageCXVI.com here and www.deathisnotdying.com here

Housekeeping Posted on | August 26, 2008 | Just a few things to note about changes here on the site. 1. I’ve begun pointing to Amazon.com MP3 downloads rather than eMusic.com. The selection is much deeper now than it was when the service debuted. And you don’t need to be a subscriber to grab a track or a full record. Seems more useful for more people. Also, if you end up downloading anything, a few pennies get kicked over to Ambient music Blog. 2. Speaking of pennies, I’m experimenting with some ads on the site. So far they’ve been nothing to write home about, and I’m leaning towards maybe removing them at some point. But I’m giving them a go after being kind of opposed to the idea in principle for so long. 3. I’ve taken to just posting a record cover and a link to a place where you can hear the tracks. I’m not much interested in talking about these records. My hope is that you can trust that after a few years of doing this site, if I post a link to something, it’s probably worth your time to have a listen. No sense in me getting in the way of that by trying to write clever things about how the record sounds. Just go listen yourself. That’s it. Lots of posts in the queue, thanks for reading, and I hope you find something worth listening to. Category: About Comments 2 Responses to “Housekeeping”
