Bringing Hand-Painted Needlepoint Canvas to life – A Cute Bargello Camel
Monday, 27 July 2009, 6:45 | Category : Needlepoint Projects, Needlework Heirlooms
Bargello needlepoint is very therapeutic. Several years ago while recovering from major surgery, I took a weekly class on how to make hand-painted needlepoint designs come to life. Each participant selected a unique canvas, threads and embellishments. I chose a “cute camel” designed on 14-mesh needlepoint canvas (I think it was painted by Liz of Tapestry Tent; but I’m not sure) with a gorgeous Middle Eastern color scheme of dark blue, red, gold, brown, and green. Most of the class participants chose animal themes including cats, dogs, elephants, and of course my camel. Deciding which needlepoint stitches to use was not only fun but educational. Up to this point, the only stitches I knew were the Bargello flame stitch, brick, tent, continental, and slanted Gobelin. While working on the camel several new stitch techniques were added to my repertoire such as the wheat stitch, Scotch, upright cross and several more. Split stitch and long and short stitches made the camel’s fur look real. Bargello stitch techniques were used in the camel’s blanket, canvas background and the border. Silk n’ Ivory by Brown Paper Packages, Caron’s Impressions, and Paternayan Persian wool were used to stitch most of the design. Pearl cotton was used for the reins. Krenik metallics covered plastic rings that were used to embellish the tassels. To make the camel even more realistic, I even researched how Bedouins decorate their camels. Since I desired as realistic an effect as possible; I learned how to make free standing tassels and cords. Tiny jingle bells were attached to simulate the sound that camels make when riding in the dessert. One of my fellow classmates had lived in the Middle East. She mentioned that Bedouins often attach jewels to the reins and the camel’s head; so I added genuine turquoise beads. I believe this hand-painted camel was originally designed for a pillow; but once the embellishments were added, I knew it had to be framed to hang in the master bathroom. You may well ask why I placed it there. The answer is two-fold and quite simple. The master bathroom is decorated in my husband’s favorite color scheme, and while I was stitching it, he fell in love with it and assumed I was making it for him all along. It’s been hanging over 10 years, and each day he never fails to give me a compliment. Although framed needlepoint is not usually covered with glass; in this case because it was going to hang in a bathroom, the framer was instructed to use it. // Technorati Tags: animal themes, bargello, Bargello Needlepoint, camels, caron, color scheme, embellishments, flame stitch, gobelin, needlepoint, needlepoint canvas, needlepoint design, needlepoint stitch, needlepoint stitches, pearl cotton, persian wool, pillow, stitch techniques, stitches, stitching, tapestry, tassels Related posts:Recycle Hand-painted Canvas for Bargello NeedlepointBargello Needlepoint Skill LevelsStitch Bargello Needlepoint in 3 Different DirectionsAnother Wright-Inspired Bargello Needlepoint Treasure

WTS: In Real life Mana Potions for $7
Posted on February 12, 2008 Filed Under News, World of Warcraft
The fine line between virtual goods, and real property gets fuzzy quite often of late. Sales of virtual money sell for real world money, or virtual goods can have real world values. Now to add more confusion to this mix up try this on for size. Yes, that’s exactly what it looks like. An in real life Mana potion to fill up your, you guessed it, in real life energy. I wonder if these will ever hit Commission Junction for people to be able to sell them. I know a few in real life friends that would buy these for souvenirs. The first person to offer them to a store like Hot Topic or, mass sell them to comic book shops will make a fortune. However at $7 bucks a pop, these potions are just going to collect dust on people’s shelves next to their still in the original wrapping action figures. Now when are they going to make some of these energy drinks for in real life rogues. Oh wait, we already have them, they’re called Red Bulls. To lose my life, ça n’est pas très gai. « And if I made a promise, would you guaranty my safety ? », « I wish I could say that I have no regrets ». La chanson From The Stars est superbe.

I’m a 19 years old artist, was born in Ukraine and am currently living in Calgary, AB, Canada. I’ve been into art since i was a kid, was drawing my notebook at classes time. but took it seriously when i was 13, then i found my interest in digital art. Now, 6 years later, i achieved a few goals i set to myself, have a few goals for the future and i know art is going to be my profession. Art for me is pretty much everything. as you can see in my online portfolio, i love to try myself in different directions. But my favorite kind which is also my original style, is monsters illustrations. :) About this design: I love to take shots down the street and use it in my designs. I took a shot of my neighbor’s old van and just gave this worm monster to take a ride. pretty simple illustration of mine which i guess makes a cool shirt. 15 comments

Work-life Balance in Japan
Culture, Japan | 29 Mar 2009 | 48 Comments | 1,656 views |
I’ve been pondering over this issue a lot recently. So much so that I feel compelled to write my first introspective post in a long time. Gone were the days of naive livejournal teenage rantings, thought I. Today, instead, we have the naive reflections of a young 20-something adult. The topic? Overtime in Japan. With my impending graduation and the possibility of work in Japan, it’s high time I faced this troubling problem head-on. It’s no secret; the majority of Japanese people (especially men) seem to devote their life to the company. Working overtime demonstrates commitment, diligence and a strong work ethic. Going home on time gets you pressured, discriminated against or even fired. At least, that is the stereotypical impression I have gotten from my various excursions to the Land of the Rising Sun. How much of this is the truth? And importantly, what can a person like me with a firm distinction between working life and family life do to fit into the Japanese working system? Questioning I’ve been questioning many people. Over the 7 years I’ve been studying Japanese; the two years I’ve spent in Japan and during my 2-month stay and hitchhike in Japan last summer; on Twitter to both Japanese followers and foreigners working in Japan, I’ve frequently (even to the point of bombardment) questioned everyone in Japan about their overtime habits. Perhaps by questioning a large number of people I might somehow placate myself? Thought I. Perhaps by seeking out those few individuals who agree with me, I might be able to trick myself into believing I could work in Japan 9-5pm and go home on time? Foolish? It seems so. The response has not been good. Not, at least, if you are like me and wish to ‘work hard and play hard’ in Japan. I can’t recall a single person who has consoled me over my worries, save for the few endearing careers advisors and teachers at Akita International University, bless them. It’s all been doom-and-gloom. Suck-it-up and stop whining or work in another country. Let’s take a look at one article on the topic, with an unsettling doomsday overtone: Work-life Balance – Coming Never to Japan Here’s a quote that sums up the gist of it: Westerners immediately decry the madness if not the moral offense of workers slaving away at their companies until the wee hours of the nights. Liberal enlightenment ideas of the individual having free reign over his own self-definition tend to resent the concept of the “company man” – when individuals are reduced to inputs. Marxists believe that the worker must pursue a self-actualization that puts the fruits of his labor within his own hands and not the capitalist’s. Work-life balance, however, is a completely loaded Western liberal concept because it creates a dichotomy between work and life – as if they are antagonizing forces. The Confucian-Statist philosophical underpinning of modern Japanese society assigns each individual a specific, unmalleable role and posits self-actualization as the loyal and perfect performance of that role. Conditioning of these beliefs starts early: young athletes choose to play one sport for their academic careers and do not change sports with the seasons like you see in other nations. Baseball players are baseball players. In general, Japanese people have one hobby, which leads to the famously maniacal dedication to certain “ridiculous” pursuits like competitive eating or obsession with a single fashion brand. This. This is what I’m up against. I can sit on my high-horse and parade around preaching moral corruption and worker’s rights, the health of the nation and the unproductivity of working long-hours but it seems, when all is said and done, that this is Japan and how the Japanese work, and I must either consign myself to its wrath or shut up and go home. I love Japan, the culture, the people and the country. But I must say I fundamentally disagree with the generalised working practices of long, often unnecessary hours and a lack of personal or family time. How do I resolve this infuriating dilemma? My soul is screaming. I want to go to Japan to live; to genuinely give something to the country, but I am slashed by a red-hot iron that will let all semblance of personal time and balance in my life seep away. Here’s a manga page that depicts a typical zangyou (overtime) situation: Advice for new company workers (Japanese) Working oneself to death We’re not talking about English-teaching here, noble as that job may be. It (I feel) doesn’t give a true representation of working in Japan. I’m talking about working for a company – a business – and having a successful, long-lasting career in Japan. I attended a careers event a couple of weeks ago at my University, conducted entirely in Japanese about finding work in Japan. The main speaker, after he was done, was quizzed by pretty much the entire audience individually. When my turn came around, I tried to be gentle, knowing how much of a weighted question I would already by pushing on him and his already strained vocal chords. His answer? Pretty typical of most of what I have heard from every other Japanese person to date (both young and old): It’s not really possible to defy the overtime system. If you value your personal time so much, perhaps you ought to re-consider working in Japan altogether? Even gaishikei (foreign companies) in Japan expect overtime. He even went as far as telling me a personal anecdote of his experience being a teacher in Japan: He spoke that, during his career as a high-school teacher, he had worked himself to the point of illness. In fact, he said, he worked himself so much that he starting getting blood in his urine! I need say no more to convince the majority of Western readers of the absurdity of this situation, but what would most Japanese people say to this? An unfortunate side-effect? Extreme, but not unheard of? What about ‘karoshi’ (death by overwork)? Please, let me know! This man’s response echoed many other responses. Sure, there are certain types of worker in Japan who, in general, are able to return home more or less on time (bankers, workers for large companies like Canon during this economic crisis), but it seems that most workers feel that overtime is a necessary thing, even though they’d prefer a more balanced life. Look at these surveys, translated courtesy of What Japan Thinks: Overtime in the Workplace Work-life Balance Apparently 68.7% of 129 people say that a Work-life Balance system has not been introduced in their workplace. According to one survey by CNET Japan, over 90% of the 1,080 people questioned (around 68% of whom were male businessmen) think that overtime is necessary for the company’s survival and, to a certain extent, something that cannot be helped. However, nearly everyone thought that Work-life Balance is important and in order to achieve it, we must ‘raise the efficiency of work’ and ‘reform the thinking of companies that see overtime as necessary’. Here’s another site which has statistics on overtime (in Japanese): Goo Research Positive trends? A few of the Twitter responses I received from my followers about overtime in Japan. A mixed bag really. Definitely a few more positive vibes than I have gotten before: The response in Japanese reads: “Recently, rather than overtime, the amount of work has actually been falling – especially in the car-industry. But when the economy gets better again, those sorts of companies will probably make you work 1 or 2 hours of overtime.” There are also trends to suggest that, slowly, perhaps, the Japanese government is waking up to the severity of the situation. Posts like this in the Japan Times or this one in Japan Today highlight changing attitudes towards work and moving towards a more balanced lifestyle which helps try and address some of the issues of the absent father in many Japanese families and poor health of company workers. Another site here, offers advice and tests on how to help you, the budding Salaryman, escape the wrath of Zangyou: Zangyou shinai! Trepidation So, where does all this leave me? Yes, it can certainly be seen above that the majority of Japanese people seem to also want rid of the heavy amounts of overtime, but see it as a ‘necessary evil’, in some sense. It’s also true that there have been governmental efforts made into bringing a more stable Work-life Balance to Japan. But is it really changing anything, and if so, will it change enough in my lifetime? It is really, in reality, possible for a newly graduated foreigner to go to Japan and work a respectable 9-5 job at a decent company? Or am I doomed to submit to the system if I wish to work in Japan? Don’t get me wrong. I am perfectly happy to do occasio

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!I woke up this morning to hear that German billionaire Adolf Merckle committed suicide after he faced huge financial losses. He was 74 years old and survived by a wife and four children. Later in the day, I watched Oprah’s first show of the year that I had previously recorded. Oprah discussed her recent weight gain and her desire to make an authentic change about her body. She said that all her success and visibility meant nothing if she could not fit into her clothes. Ouch! I was startled as to how negative her self talk was initially but she got better and eventually said, “God blessed me in THIS body” so she was going to spend more time loving herself. Mr. Merckle’s family issued a statement: “The distress to his firms caused by the financial crisis and the related uncertainties of recent weeks, along with the helplessness of no longer being able to act, broke the passionate family businessman, and he ended his life.” I was struck as to how two of the world’s billionaires have still not figured out how to be happy. Given the media report and constant status updates about the world’s current state of financial affairs, it is a little baffling to read about this. Or is it? However both billionaires are going to have different outcomes. Power and Money: First of all, people that have made a lot of money tend to also enjoy, and many times, abuse, the perceived power that comes with it. Abuse? Yes, abuse. If you wield that perceived power over others, it is abuse. If you somehow believe that your power is equal to money or your financial status, then you are abusing your own self. Truth: Money does not equal true power and does not equal happiness. Let me say this again in case you are not perfectly clear. If you think that your value as a person is based on how much you earn, you can easily end up like one of these billionaires. Unhappy! Does that level of financial accrual bring a sense of power? Yes. That power comes from feeling accomplished and probably feeling that you have met or exceeded some of your goals. That feeling, consistently over time, becomes a belief that you can do anything. Is anything wrong with that? No. I am talking about the abuse of power. The belief that you can do anything is good. Its great. But when you are faced with a situation where you now have to yield your resistance and let go, it is more difficult for those at the “top,” the billionaires in this case, to yield and let go. Different outcomes: I commend Oprah for asking for help from Bob Greene. I commend her for going public about what she perceives as a personal failure. What excited me the most was Bob Greene said he had a theory that he had not discussed with Oprah and that he believed that Oprah had never learned to be happy; she had only learned to survive. Billionaire Adolf does not appear to have asked for help. His body was found by the railroad tracks. He was alone and not in a familiar place when he died. His children and wife were left with anguish. I believe that given his long expertise in business, that this opportunity of financial challenge could have opened new doors for him. Who do I identify with? I can identify with Billionaire Adolf as he obviously did not believe in himself that he could pull through this and be better for it in the end. I have been there.  I did not know how to ask for help. I did not know how to say enough is enough. In many ways, I committed little acts of suicide. When my father died, I felt a piece of myself go with him. I never talked about it. I hurt a lot about it. In a sense, an act of cutting myself off. That is a form of emotional suicide. When my mother died, I experienced the same thing. I did not ask for help. When my 14 year old law practice died, I cut off a piece of myself as well. I identify better with Oprah though because I did come around to asking for help. I asked for help and I got help. I realized that my problems were really not that bad and that I could turn lemons into lemonade. I realized that my self talk was feeding that part of me that wanted to give up instead of finding my authentic self. I worked on myself. I got a coach. I got my family involved. I leaned on my husband somemore. I spent more time alone. I self nutured more. I cared more for my soul. That is how I became the authentic change coach. When I embraced authentic change in my life and made those changes, I tapped into happiness, got a hold of it and soared. Now, it is not just lemonade, it is champagne and caviar for me. I started to see myself as a person that I valued far more than my title as an attorney, far more than money or any of these accomplishments. I started to see myself as who I am: Precious. That is how I gained more happiness in my life. That is why these two billionaires and what happened to both of them matter to me. I hope it matters to you too. Seven Lessons learned: 1. Know when you are in trouble 2. Ask for help. 3. Get it. Money does not preclude you from life’s problems. 4. Happiness solves a lot of problems. 5. Money does not buy happiness. 6. You are precious. Not what you are or what you do. Who you are is precious. 7. From this place of value, you can get a proper perspective of what you are and what you do. Questions: Oprah asked four questions at the end of her show. Whatever your issue is, substitute it for the weight issue and see what comes up with you and please share. Why are you overweight? Ask yourself what you are unhappy about. What are you hungry for? Nurturance, acceptance? Why have you been unable to maintain weight loss in the past? Why do you want to lose weight? If you say you will be happy at a particular size or weight you are on the wrong track. I am looking forward to your responses.
