diplomatic « Sunday Scenery    Exploring Charleston » No Sense of Humor? Barrel Monster Maybe it’s my age, or maybe I’m more conservative than I ever imagined, but I don’t understand where people’s heads are these day. On May 31st, motorists on Hillsborough Street, here in Raleigh, encountered the “monster” pictured here. It had been created using the traffic control barrels you might see in most construction zones. The so-called, “Barrel Monster” was impounded by the police who began an investigation. A story appeared Friday in the Raleigh News and Observer reporting that police had identified and arrested the artist who created this “work of art.” That’s when things started to get a little crazy. Turns out, the artist is a 21 year-old student at North Carolina State University. Joseph Carnevale is a self-described street artist who has caught the attention of authorities previously. It seems that Carnevale was responsible for a painting on an industrial tank in the vicinity of another construction project in Raleigh. Apparently, there was enough similarity between the two creations that police made the connection to Carnevale almost immediately. In a post on his blog, “nopromiseofsafety“, Carnevale has asked that those who don’t want to see him end up in jail contact the Wake County District Attorney, Colon Willoughby, Jr., and urge him to drop the charge against Carnevale. In fact, there are also Facebook groups that promoting the idea of dropping the charges against the NC State student. What am I missing here? Joseph Carnevale has admitted taking the construction barrels from the construction site in the dead of night, cramming them in the trunk of his car quickly so that no one would see him, and then driving off with someone else’s property. Taking the barrels back to his home, he then cut up the barrels, glued and screwed them together to create the “Barrel Monster” and then took his creation back to the construction site. Under the cover of darkness, he set up his creation and then returned home to await public reaction to his creation. Surprisingly, there is a groundswell of support for the idea of dropping the misdemeanor charges against Carnevale. Arguments have been made that his creation highlights the fact drivers are entering a construction zone. Some have argued that “the stupid police” have more serious crimes they should be focused on. It has also been suggested that Carnevale be rewarded for his creativity. In my estimation, people are missing the main point: Carnevale took property belonging to someone else without their permission. He then destroyed that property by “cutting and screwing together the pieces” to create his “work of art.” Not only that, but he did these acts under the cover of darkness and tried to keep from being detected. If he was all that proud of what he was doing, he would have done all of this in the light of day. Or better yet, he would have gone to the construction company to see if they would donate the three barrels for his project. Or maybe even offer to pay for them. Many of the comments I have seen in connection with this event are young people who thing that “guerrilla street art” is super cool. They are appalled that authorities would dare to hold this young man responsible for his actions. I wonder if their attitude would be the same if Carnevale had taken their car, or their iPods, or some other property for one of his creations. It’s always easy to express support for this kind of vandalism when the property being “borrowed,” defaced or destroyed belongs to someone else. The fact that the value of the barrels is set at a little less than $350 is beside the point. The property did not belong to the artist. That’s the point! I will make the following concession: Joseph Carnevale is a very creative person. I would even concede that he’s come up with an idea that is worth exploring. Create more of these “Barrel Monsters” and place them at the beginning of construction zones to grab the attention of motorists as they enter these areas. But do it legally, and with the support of the construction companies. Sadly, I doubt if that idea would appeal to someone like Carnevale. If he is like most “guerilla street artists” the whole point is to shock and create controversy. If that is the case, I hope Colon Willoughby, Jr., is successful in his prosecution of Carnevale’s case. At the very least, this young man should be placed on probation for a couple of years to give him the chance to learn what it means to be a responsible member of society. Exercising the What Ifs

Image via Wikipedia A real key to seeing the funny, is seeing the “What ifs.” Here is something you can do to help develop those “What If” muscles. The game is called “Objects” and requires the name of a small inantimate object. Then you open the gate and let your mind off the leash. For example: What can you do with a No.2 wooden pencil: The first thing that comes to mind is that the Mirado pencil was actually named the Mikado until WWII when it was felt anti-Japanese sentiments would hurt sales, so the the K was changed to an R. But beyond that, there are so many things you can do with a  pencil. Sharpened and stood upright they become the stockade fence of a fort If you have to move something heavy then you can lay them down and make a little log rolling device, use the actually round ones rather than the octagonal ones for best results. Several of them spliced together create the frame of a kite. About a million of them lashed together make a great raft for escaping that island in Lost Take a hundred or so and lay them out in a circle with the erasers touching and you can make a great Sun mask Speaking of erasers, if your sneakers just aren’t sneaking anymore because the soles are worn out, then fifty or sixty erasers from pencils, glued on the bottom of your shoes can make them like new! Drill a couple of holes in pencils and run a string through them and you can make a great “log” bridge for GI Joe. All those pencils that you took the erasers from for your sneakers? The empty metal eraser shell can make a great biscuit cutter for your GI Joe’s mess hall. Break a finger? A couple of pencils can make a great splint. Lose your cleats for the track meet? Not to worry, cut the points from ten pencils and insert them into the holes for your cleats and you’re good to go! Escaping from a high-security facility at night? Rub the graphite from a few pencils on your face for camouflage. Need axles for an old toy car? Pencils! Need tank treads for GI Joe’s tank? Cut pencils into three pieces and string some wires through two holes drilled in each piece and there’s your new tread. I’ve always thought with enough pencils, a replica of the Eiffel Tower would be really easy. Fifteen thousand pencils glued together can make a great desk If you are into the tricks of the fakirs – 333 pencils with the sharp end up make for a great bed of “nails” Some white tape and a pencil makes a great replacement ear-piece for your glasses or shades. Tent Pole – for GI Joe, or enough of them with some duct tape and it works for your tent too. Archimedes original quote was “With a big enough pencil and a fulcrum point, I could move the world. Trapped in a prison cell? Take the lead out of a pencil and get a needle, dip it in poison (that may be tough) and then use the pencil as a blow gun to subdue the guards. Of course you might just use the deleaded pencil as a straw. In these days of high energy prices how about using pencils as heating fuel? Why stop there? Enough pencils and a boiler and you’ve got steam baby! Tent pegs. Golf tees. Shaped and painted white? False teeth! Unique jewelry for piercings No need to spend money on those expensive wooden roller window shades. enough pencils strung together… And of course a great use for the used up pencil stubs is a “beaded” curtain! So retro! So cool! Rub two together to make a fire. A small arrow for a small bow. Now you try. The idea is not that any of these make sense, but just stretch us into seeing a few more of the possibilities. You can try it while driving, while stuck in traffic, as a warm up to writing. Here are some small objects to get you started: A key A red rubber ball Rubber band Paper Clip Drinking Straw Paper Plate A sock Paperback book Shoelace A pillow This may even have pratical applications: The first beer koozy (those thick insulators for cans) was cut and made from an old scuba diving wetsuit… by a thirsty scuba diver, tired of drinking warm beer. That’s A Wrap!

Wispy TP tendrils wafting in the breeze. We got wrapped last night. The picture was taken afrter quite  a bit of clean-up and does not do the effort justice.  And since Arlene and I don’t have any friends that stay up late enough to attempt this, we decided it must be some of Dalton’s friends. Which reminds me of the time, back in the day, when I was wrapping a house with Dave Lane, John Bond and Brad McMinn, or it might have been Mickey Ford, Don Hill and Donald Freeman, or any number of others. On this particular night, not caring what clothing cost, I crawled underneath a car to escape detection and aprehension by an irate father. Keep in mind that cars weren’t sealed so tightly then. Most driveways were ice-rink slick with oil drippings. I survived. My t-shirt and jeans did not. Now parents call ahead to make sure it’s OK to do the TP deed. Crime and corruption in Congress is one thing, you expect it. But calling ahead to ask permission to wrap a house? This is the kind of thing that makes me shake my head and wonder what has this world become? It’s toilet paper thrown in a tree! It’s made to dissolve in water! People get upset and call the cops about this? Call ahead and ask permission? And that isn’t the only thing that’s changed. Where we used to look for the industrial strength sandpaper consistency cheap toilet paper…. Our tree was wrapped in Charmin Ultra Extra Strong. This is one nice neighborhood! Nearly all of it was suitable for re-use! Unfortunately Arlene got the section with a twig stuck in it. Maybe I should have called her first and asked permission. Easy Open?

Well! That was easy! I have a running battle with easy-open containers. Most of them aren’t. Medicine bottles with the cryptic “Push & Turn” instructions. Tabs on boxes that dispense paper cuts as often as the contents. Plastic packs that slice & dice. This Pop-Secret example of the “glue every possible edge” school of package design. Hill’s Science Diet Cat Food bags, not only have an easy open design, but also a resealable zip-lock… Except tearing at the tab provided doesn’t open the bag, and cutting anywhere below it ruins the zip-lock. After marrying me, Arlene had to get over occasionally seeing the naked cereal bag laying on the breakfast table next to what was left of the box. I believe every architect should have to actually live or work in a building he designs, every doctor should take some of his own medicine, Congress should have to live with the laws they pass, and every origami expert who thinks they can design packaging, should be dropped on a desert island and forced to survive by actually opening their boxes, tubes, jars and bags. It’s a small thing I know. But life is too short for bad staplers, pens that don’t write, web-sites desgined for Internet Explorer and easy-open containers, that don’t. O FICH! – 1º Festival Internacional de Cinema de humor em Portugal vai decorrer entre 4 a 11 de Julho de 2009, em Albufeira, na Prac?a dos  Pescadores, junto a? praia. Este certame visa dar visibilidade a?s diferentes formas  cinematogra?ficas de humor no Mundo e ser uma Festa anual de refere?ncia Nacional e  Internacional. Neste sentido o Festival propõe-se envolver toda a comunidade humorística portuguesa e algumas das Figuras internacionais de maior notoriedade do género – na 1ª edição o Homenageado presente é Terry Jones dos Monty Python, a quem será dedicado um ciclo extra-concurso com a projecção dos seus filmes mais marcantes e uma homenagem Pública. Terry Jones presidirá a uma mesa-redonda, com o tema «O humor é Sério», a desenvolver no dia 11, no âmbito do Festival. «Abaixo o Mau Humor» é a assinatura da campanha, que conta com a assinatura da Agência de Publicidade Sumo Portugal, e que vem marcar claramente a atitude do FICH!: introduzir o sentido de humor no Código Genético dos Portugueses e motivar o público para o humor refinado e inteligente. As noites de Albufeira serão, durante 8 dias, palco da projecção dos 44 filmes a concurso, provenientes de 22 países, acompanhados dos seus realizadores, produtores e actores. O júri é composto por personalidades nacionais e internacionais – José de Pina, Luís Galvão Telles, ZeZé Gambôa, Jacques Mer, Ana Bustorff, Nilton e Pierre Étaix– que vão premiar a Melhor Longa-Metragem, Curta-Metragem, Curta de Animação, Melhor Realizador, Melhor Actor e Melhor Actriz. Longas, curtas e filmes de animação serão projectados num grande ecrã, junto à praia dos Pescadores, a partir das 21:30h. No mesmo período haverá também 2 sessões de curtas-metragens exibidas na FNAC do Algarve Shopping em horário a determinar. Apadrinhado por figuras da comunidade humorística Portuguesa, como Rui Unas – anfitrião e a voz da campanha -, Maria Rueff, Herman José, António Feio, Nuno Lopes, José Pedro Gomes, entre outros, o FICH! é organizado pela Associação Mediterrar e pela ACRAL – Associação do Comércio e Serviços da Região do Algarve, em parceria com a Câmara Municipal de Albufeira e com o apoio do Turismo do Algarve, sendo co-financiado pelo MODCOM e pelo Ministério da Economia e da Inovação. A cat died and went to Heaven. God met her at the gates and said, ‘You have been a good cat all these years. Anything you want is yours for the asking.’ The cat thought for a minute and then said, ‘All my life I lived on a farm and slept on hard wooden floors . I would like a real fluffy pillow to sleep on.’ God said, ‘Say no more.’ Instantly the cat had a huge fluffy pillow. A few days later, six mice were killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. God met the mice at the gates with the same offer that He made to the cat. The mice said, ‘Well, we have had to run all of our lives: from cats, dogs, and even people with brooms! If we could just have some little roller skates, we would not have to run again.’ God answered, ‘It is done.’ All the mice had beautiful little roller skates. About a week later, God decided to check on the cat. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow. God gently awakened the cat and asked, ‘Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?’ The cat replied, ‘Oh, it is WONDERFUL. I have never been so happy in my life. Vuoi commentare ?. La conobbi a New York in questa pazza estate. Successivamente la quasi “costrinsi” ad aprire un blog, per quanto mi faceva ridere con le sue trovate. Ora, siccome non finisce mai di stupirmi e non ho nessuna intenzione di postare qualcosa sulle vicende della famiglia berlusconiana, ho deciso di dedicare questo post al suo ultimo intevento. Vai Vale  (questo è il suo blog)…   ….La riflessione anche qui nasce spontanea…..è ke mi è parso di aver trascurato abbastanza il mio bloghicello….o meglio….di esser partita con tanta gagliardezza e giovinezza….per arrivare al fondo del patetico e tormentato….e di questo mi sono resa conto ieri….quando inviai una canzone ai miei due ignari amici….il Solista maledetto, ke si era trovato da stè parti per copiarsi le versioni, e il Kit dalle fattezze mikelangioleske….ebbene….a loro inviai una song that i was listening to….e loro inconsapevoli ..accettarono….ora….il solista, grazie all’acidità ke lo distingue, riuscì a sopravvivere e a ignorarmi…il gentil kit mi rispose cn una melodia saggevole…il ke mi ha fatto riflettere abbastaza…e qui ci scappa pure un ringraziamento…al triestino ke mi ascolta sempre e mi consiglia……ma , lasciando da parte ciò ke fa molto notte degli oscar di provincia!, ecco….mi è venuto in mente..ciò….riflettevo sul mese di febbraio…ke inzommma….quest’anno amo men ke meno….. 1)….fra poki giorni, mi ritroverò cn qualke ruga al contorno okki, qualke capello bianco e la pensione….ke almeno potrei investire per risolvere il secondo punto….ritirandomi un modello dal postal market……..muahauhauahauha 2)…se fossi una dittatrice- cosa ke rientra nei miei piani- abolirei il Natale, cm molti già sanno, e ovviamente San Valentino…voglio dire…mi sembra ke c’è n’accordo internazionale con i dentisti..prima i panettoni, poi gli cioccolatini…..ma andiamo…e l’obesità’??….e poi basta BASTA…….nzomma…non posso comprarmi neanke na barretta di cioccolato ke me la inghirlandano cm n’uovo di pasqua e ci scrivono i love u..così…e mi kiedono…allora…cm si kiama???…FFFFFFFalsi e Bugiardi….tutti…si,tutti….anke i giapponesi…..ma nozmma…..e ho una lista lunga cm quella dei creditori….perkè cm na saggia amica mia disse oggi….jay z ti tradisce…pharell no!!!!!!!…e vallo a trovare un pharell….anzi trovamelo pharell…possibilmente vestito di seta…. ……ecco appunto…perseverare è diabbolico……..come dice mio zio quando siamo in makkina e metto la seconda e libero la frizione…andando a mille contro i muretti del cimitero…ke nn è un posto molto festaiolo….ma stranamente…alle 2 di pomeriggio, con i lampi e gli uragani..è pieno di gente…bersagli mobili da 1000 punti ciascuno…il ke andrebbe bene se fosse una partita a freccette!!!!!!!!!…ma i tempi sono cambiati e adeguarsi nn è facile….specie se stai attraversando la fase sessantotto e vivi nel 2007….forse hai ragione tu conny…quando dice ke sarei stata na perfetta hippye…non molto yoko ono..maledetta…ma almeno non avrei avuto problemi con la capigliatura folta, non avrei dovuto allisciare la kioma, ne farmi la doccia ogni giorno…e soprattutto non avrei dovuto trovare uno ke i fiori me li regalasse!!!!!   A me fa morire… Continua così   umorismo chitty chitty bang bang divx download namesake the Post simili No related posts 4 commenti
