Money Matters, Part 6 of 6: 13 resources for Freelance Writers
November 14, 2007 - Written by James - 2 Comments
I generally can’t stand blog posts that list a ton of links. I know, I know, it’s the thing to do and sharing the love goes hand in hand with good blogging practices.
Still, I tend to avoid it. My thoughts are that one day, there will be a confusing and complex spider web of posts about links that link to other posts about links and more posts about links until all that is left to read in the universe is links.
While surfing around to look for information about money issues, taxes and filing income reports, I did end up finding information that may be useful to beginning freelance writers. Sometimes, bending the “rules” is worth it, so here are those links (shudders):
Get details on the 1099 form for US tax filing and what to do in the case of discrepancies
Prepare for tax time by making sure you have everything you need
InkyGirl offers a ton of good tax tips for writers
Government GST and PST collection information for Canadian self-employed writers who gross over $30,000 per year – and that’s gross, not net, folks.
Information on what is considered a business expense
A good FAQ about some tax-related issues for freelance writers
Tips to keep track of your writing business expenses
Luc Latulippe goes in search of the accounting software that does it all. He’s still looking…
Ehow offers tips on information to indicate on your invoices
Here’s a great list of some applications that benefit freelancers– including accounting software
Here are some FAQs for GST answered by the PWAC
This is an interesting post on a system for invoicing clients
And last but not least, here’s an article on how to invoice clients from the all-knowing About.com.
I told Harry that the next time I come up with what I think is a brilliant idea for a series of posts, he should smack me around or something. Still, I hope you’ve enjoyed the mini-series on accounting and money matters for freelance writers, and I hope even more that you learn something new.

Categorized | News PHP CMS/Framework Resources Posted on 02 August 2004 by Demian Turner A short while back I wrote proposing to review a number of CMS/frameworks, and tried to solicit ideas on how to fairly rate the various players. As it turns out, this has been a difficult task, mainly because the many CMS/frameworks out there are developing rapidly and at different rates – it seems silly to try and attribute fixed values to any of them. There are, however, an increasing number of independent reviews emerging from folks’ experience of the different packages available, so I thought the intention would be better served by trying to group together these links, similar to the relatively popular PEAR links on this site. With this is mind, check out the PHP framework resource page. And if you bump into any reviews yourself please leave a note in the comments and I’ll try and add it to the list. 2 Comments For This Post

Apple iWork resources and Templates

The iWork suite of applications ( Numbers, Pages, Keynote ) comes with a number of really well made templates designed to get you producing superb quality, impressive looking documents in no time at all. But what if the pre-installed templates aren’t quite what you need for your current project or task ? There are a surprisingly small number of sites where you can find additional templates for the iWork applications. The list below contains the best ones that seem to be available at the moment. If you know of any better ones please drop a comment on this post and I will gladly update it to include them. iWorkCommunity.com:Template Exchange - This site is probably the most comprehensive currently available. At the time of writing there were 225 Pages templates, 5 for Keynote and 15 for Numbers. All the templates here are free to download and use. iWork Templates - This is a slightly more recent free template site which currently only has about 18 templates to offer. Number Templates - This site specialises on free templates for Numbers as well as providing hints and tips on how to use the application. Jumsoft is a commercial site providing high quality templates for iWeb, Pages and Keynote as well as clipart and animations. The Pages templates product is $39 and provides a range of 20 different templates. Keynote Pro is another commercial site that offers a range of templates for Pages and of course Keynote. Their themes are exceptionally elegant and stylish. Oneeyedgoldfish is a UK based company who provide a range of templates for Pages at £10 per theme or all of their themes for £40. They also have a small number of free templates for download as a taster of their full offerings. So there you have it. A small list for now but hopefully of help anyway. Please do tell me of any other good resources for iWork by leaving a comment below.

You’ve noticed I mention that I’m studying with Roger CPA Review software for the FAR section of the CPA exam right now. I thought I’d point out that they have some free resources available, and some free demo CPA review videos. They have free CPA review study tips, general information for beginners to the CPA exam process (which still includes me, so I can’t an swer all the questions their website can!) If you’re thinking about buying a CPA exam review software, definitely check out their free demos and see what you think. Roger appealed to me right from the start, and he remains just that energetic through every video. So if you like his style, the answer is YES, he is like that all the way through! Who knows what will happen tomorrow. It seems that everyday there is more and more news about the space.
I sincerely hope that you rely in part on ReelSEO to get our in-depth news, tips, and observations about the happenings within the industry. We try our best to provide objective news, research, tips, and do our best to assist in evangelizing and covering this exciting, and rapidly growing space. That being said, there are many other great sources out there that I suggest you take a look at. Consider adding the following sources to your daily RSS feed for keeping up on all that is going on with the online video industry. Additionally, I have provided a few good resources below these which I follow to keep up on all that is happening with regard to social media, digital media, and search engines.
I’ve listed these in no particular order. You can also grab this as an OPML here. I realize that there are tons more that are probably worthy of listing.. Feel free to add sources that you think are worthy in the comments below, and Ill take a look. Thanks to all those who provide these excellent publications.

Friday Wealth Resources: two #1 secrets, 5 benefits, and eat your own cooking
Posted on 09. Jan, 2009 by Elizabeth Potts Weinstein in Mindset
Each Friday I will post a list of amazing resources for you from the web to help you build holistic wealth for you and your business. If you have any resources to suggest, feel free to leave a comment below or reply to me on twitter. Enjoy!
1. Here’s the one secret that made 2008 my best year so far, and will make 2009 my best year ever.
The Single Secret to Making 2009 Your Best Year Ever from Zen Habits by Leo Babauta
I made a small list of things I’d recommend to anyone wanting to make 2009 their best year ever … But then I realized that there’s just one tip that’s needed. And it’s not a tip you’ll read in most personal development, productivity or self-help blogs or books. That’s because if you implemented this one tip, you wouldn’t really need any others. It would put all of us out of business.
2. The Creative Commons form license agreements is a great way to protect your content without having to hire an attorney. But here’s some other great benefits:
5 Lesser-Known Benefits to Creative Commons from The Blog Herald by Jonathan Bailey
In the uncertain copyright climate of the Web, having a firm lawyer-written license, regardless of what it says, can have huge benefits over the ambiguity that comes with not having one. Here are just five less-promoted ways that choosing a CC license can help you, your site and your content, even as you surrender some of your rights in a particular work.
3. You may have heard the statement “we right the book we need to read” … well some of us (including yours truly) need to read our own books.
Investment Gurus Don’t Even Follow Their Own Advice from Techdirt by Michael Masnick
The Wall Street Journal surveyed a number of people famous for their investment strategies and found plenty willing to (somewhat sheepishly) admit they don’t follow the strategies themselves, often proving that emotion overcomes rational thinking when it comes to investments.
4. It’s amazing how many entrepreneurs are afraid to give away content (blog posts, special reports, teleclasses) because they are afraid that if they give away their stuff, no one will buy their advice. But the more you give away, the more you get in return. Exponentially.
The Millionaire’s Secret Trait That Attracts Crazy Amounts of Success from Copyblogger by Sonia Simone
The secret to online success isn’t so different from the secret to offline success. There’s a quality the best entrepreneurs share that gives them a massive competitive advantage. And as usual, being online lets you leverage that secret for even greater success.

freebibles.net
main website
Free bibles in the US if you have a real need.
freebibles.net is a superb website that will provide you with a free hard copy of a bible if you live in America and fulfill certain criteria. Most of the bibles shown on this website are only available online, so this makes freebibles.net really unique; and due to the other criteria it helps ensure that this service really helps those that need it. freebibles.net is a non-denominational religious nonprofit organisation set up to distribute English and Spanish bibles. You can’t request a specific translation just the language.
The stipulations are as follows:
1) Only the very poor, sick and imprisoned are eligible
2) They only ship Bibles to United States locations.
3) Only one Holy Bible per person and per address.
4) They do NOT send Bibles to ministries, only to individuals.
You can also donate to this cause if you would like to help other people receive free bibles.
Here are some of the reasons people have requested bibles from them recently:
Why Do You Want A Bible: I lost mine in a fire. I can’t afford another I am lost with out my bible
Why Do You Want A Bible: For my husband in jail
Why Do You Want A Bible: I have to spend my disability money on my rent

If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.Powered by WP Greet Box I found a few online medical/health tools that I thought would be beneficial to anyone interested in finding answers to health and medical questions. While accessing information online is not a substitute for seeing a doctor face to face, these resources may be helpful if you have nagging questions or need information. 1. Healia Healia is a place where you can access information on clinical trials, and the latest research from medical journals. Healia offers interactive communities where you can interact with others about health concerns. You can ask a health/medical question and others in the community will answer or you can share your knowledge with others in the community. It’s also an opportunity to find others who share similar health concerns and can offer support. There are a few health professionals that you can assess for questions. Healia was originally started with funding from the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health. If you join Healia you have the option of selecting parts of your profile that you want to be held private. Click here to access Healia. 2. iMedix iMedix is a website where you can create a profile and state what health topics you are interested in. You can interact with other members and ask and answer health questions. Click here to access iMedix. 3. JustAnswer! JustAnswer! is a website where you can ask a question from a health care professional, including health law experts and dentists. 27 Great Color Scheme Tools, Generators & Resources
Hey, welcome to AzAkers.com, thanks for visiting! Be sure to comment, Digg or Stumble anything you find interesting - someone else may want to see it too.

An effective color scheme is key to the success of any design project. When selected properly & used appropriately, colors can convey a message, invoke a feeling, or bring attention to areas of interest even before imagery or text is introduced to a design. The trick is understanding what to use and when to use it, that’s where color theory comes in. As Wikipedia puts it - color theory is “a body of practical guidance on color mixing and the visual impact of specific color combinations”. Put more simply - it’s the rules that say which colors work well together and why. Allowing these principles to guide color selection can improve the effectiveness of color in design. Thankfully, there are a number of great online tools to aide designers in the color selection process. I’ve outlined my favorites including color schemers, online color selection tools, color palette resources and a few general color theory information sites below. 1 | Generator Kuler : Color Scheme Tool from Adobe Kuler, Adobe’s gorgeous free online color schemer, makes color exploration fun. Generate themes from scratch or from uploaded images. Looking for inspiration? You’re in luck - browse the vast library of tagged, rated user created color schemes that can be downloaded directly to Adobe color tables. 2 | Generator WellStyled : Color Scheme Generator 2 This easy to use color scheme tool is both a color pallete generator and a color theory tool. A few clicks of the color wheel and even a color-theory novice begins to get the idea. This is the newest version of the WellStyled color generator and provides a number of improvements over the older version. If this color tool isn’t already in your favorites list you’re probably going to want to bookmark it right away.. 3 | Generator WebsiteTips : Colour Scheme Chooser The SitePro colour scheme tool helps you select colour palettes using a number of intuitive sliders and value fields. Switch between monochromatic, analogic, complimentary, split complementary, triadic, and double contrast on the fly to see even more color combo options. This is another great tool for exploring color combinations quickly and easily. 4 | Generator ColorSpire : Create Website Color Schemes I really like the ColorSpire color schemes creator tool. It’s simple, has a clean design, and has a nicely limited set of tools & features. Some of the color tools out there are weak, and lack usability, others are robust and rich with features I don’t really need. ColorSpire’s schemer, like Baby Bears porridge is ‘just right’. As a PhotoShop or Illustrator user you’ll recognize the primary color selection tool, which is clean and operates smoothly. The primary color selection tool establishes the central color, which sets up the secondary color selection interface (the color wheel). The right side of the tool is dedicated to several swatches, each associated with a different segment of a mock template. As you assign colors to the swatches, the mock template’s colors change allowing designers to get a quick overview of their colors working together. 5 | Generator ColorsOnTheWeb : Color Wizard Color Scheme Generator The Color Wizard is another one of those tools that is great for quick color experimenting. I use it less for creating whole color schemes and more for exploring the nuanced variations of a selected color - although it does provide scheme direction as well. 6 | Generator VisiBone : Webmaster’s Color Lab No list of online color tools would be complete with-out VisiBone, the original online color palette tool. This simple color scheme picker designed for web designers was among the first and longest standing online color resources. it’s probably already in your list of color tool favorites, but I thought I’d include it in this list anyway - for nostalgia sake. 7 | Generator ColorBlender : Free Online Color Matching Tool 1st place winner of the SEOMOZ Web 2.0 site awards in the ‘Visual Arts’ category, ColorBlender is a free online color palette tool with an interesting twist. One of the interesting and unique features of this tool is the ability to export your scheme to PhotoShop(.act) & Illustrator(.eps) color tables. You can browse user blends at http://www.colorblender.com/browse.asp 8 | Generator 4096 Color Wheel : Jemima’s 4096 Color Wheel This is another very fast color selection tool that allows you to select colors from a web-smart color wheel. The color wheel has more color options/variations than most online color pickers, and displays ‘web-safe’ hex codes, unsafe hex codes and the compromised ‘web-smart’ hex codes for brilliant color select. 9 | Generator ColorMixers : Color Scheme Generator Color mixers is a fairly simple tool that that has grown over time into a resource in it’s own right. It’s been a round a while, so many of it’s features have been integrated and improved upon in other tools, but I still like it for certain color mix explorations. Like the ColorBlender tool, it allows you to export generated color schemes to PhotoShop & Illustrator color tables. 10 | Generator ColorDB : Full Featured Color Selection Tool This French color selection tool boasts some pretty unique usability amongst the color tools I’ve included in this list. In addition to a design akin to PhotoShop 6 or 7 (in vogue back when the tool was originally released) it also has some PhotoShop-like depth of usability. With color harmony option that include complimentary, opposite, neutral, shades, split opposite, slipt complimentary, triadic and tetradic and one click ‘find similar…’ hue, saturation, lightness, brilliance etc etc - you’re unlikely to be left wanting to see ‘more variations’. This tool was a new discovery for me, and so far I’m really digging it - hopefully you will too. 11 | Generator MediaZeal : Color Scheme Planner The MediaZeal color charts are great for beginners just starting out with web design. Choose from named colors or windows safe colors and create your color scheme with a few clicks. This plain jane schemer is just right for beginner web designers. 12 | Generator Defence Mechanism : ColorToy 2.0 Flash Color Schemer I think this generator is more of an experiment with Flash than anything, but it generates complementary color schemes based on the color values you input (RGB values or Hex code values). For fun you can click ‘random’ and preview scheme after scheme. Again, some of these tools aren’t terrible robust, but could help trigger creativity and scheme ideas when you find yourself stuck. 13 | Generator NetEffect : Unsafe Colormatch Tool Color-nazi’s beware, this next tool takes a unique perspective on at the color wheel. The traditional color wheel, of course, positions red in the high noon position and progresses through twelve hue steps counter clockwise. Christian argues that “in color scheming some colors are more equal than others”. So he’s designed the Unsafe Colormatch wheel to take this into consideration by overlapping the more interesting colors while putting the higher contrasting colors on top of lesser contrasting colors. it’s an interesting look at color, and a pretty decent tool - definitely worth checking out. 14 | Generator Color Palette Generator : Color Palettes From Images The Color Palette Generator, from web designer Jeff Minard, generates a simple color scheme from images uploaded to the application. My favorite thing about this tool is that Jeff makes the source code available for free! Make sure to email him if you use it as he gets a kick out of seeing what people are doing with the application. 15 | Generator Swatchify : Simple Color Palette Tool Not a terribly robust tool, the Swatchify palette tool allows you to enter a series of hex values and create a color palette which can be referenced later by others through a unique URL which is generated after colors are selected. A clean layout, and no advertising make this a nice, safe alternative platform for sharing color palettes with clients, readers and friends. 16 | Generator ColorSchemer : Online Color Scheme Generator This is a simplified online interface for the more robust desktop color tool from ColorSchemer.com. Select a color and the interface provides a complete color array. Great for quick color ideas. 17 | Generator Color Hunter : Color Schemes From images Another color schemer that generates color palettes from uploaded images, Color Hunter goes a few steps further and adds some interactive elements to the mix. Each generated scheme is archived allowing users to browse other users schemes. Color hunter also allows you to tag & rate the schemes aiding users in their search through the saved palettes. The color generator even incorporates a user name & password accessible account to allow you to store and retrieve your favorite color schemes. 18 | Schemes ColorJack : Color Schemes At first glance ColorJack just doesn’t impress. It appears to be another featureless, cookie cutte
