THOMAS & friends WOODEN TRAIN RECALL June 13, 2007 by Mommy Zabs Filed under Children, International Leave a comment I’m not super happy this moment. I really DID hear what I just heard on fox news. I looked it up online (after trying the hotline to no avail) and it is true. Thomas and friends has issued a recall on certain wood railway cars. If I haven’t mentioned it before, My boys are HUGE fans of Thomas. These trains were recalled because of LEAD PAINT!!! Excuse me but what dumb head paints toys with lead paint? (sorry for the demeaning language, but I’m upset). CHINA APPARENTLY. As I have told you before I follow a very reliable news source Chinaview. There are constant recall on products from China and many food recalls due to poisens. It is not like this is a flaw that they found in the design of an item that they would not have known better… people in general know that lead is a no-no in paints these days. Let alone paint on a toy that a child will no doubt have in their mouth. Call me a conspiracy theorist but was this on purpose or something? I’m going to say no because that would be such a harsh accusation. But I’m trying to wrap my head around this kind of mistake being made. If your child loves Thomas and friends and you have wooden toys pay attention to this list and this picture. These are the recalled items if produced between January 2005 and the present. Red James Engine & Red James’ # 5 Coal Tender Red Lights & Sounds James Engine & Red James’ #5 Lights & Sounds Coal Tender James with Team Colors Engine & James with Team Colors #5 Coal Tender Red Skarloey Engine Brown & Yellow Old Slow Coach Red Hook & Ladder Truck & Red Water Tanker Truck Red Musical Caboose Red Sodor Line Caboose Red Coal Car labeled “2006 Day Out With Thomas” on the Side Red Baggage Car Red Holiday Caboose Red “Sodor Mail” Car Red Fire Brigade Truck Red Fire Brigade Train Deluxe Sodor Fire Station Red Coal Car Yellow Box Car Red Stop Sign Yellow Railroad Crossing Sign Yellow “Sodor Cargo Company” Cargo Piece Smelting Yard Ice Cream Factory If you need more information you can call (866) 725-4407 Or you can go here. I do not know yet if refunds will be issued on these products. We have 2 of the trains in this house. Nice. Thanks T&F… let’s stop producing in China okay? Oh also if for some reason you are annoyed that I have a China product since I have spoken out against it… I bought them prior to my (as much as feasible) boycott. This morning, I woke up early. Weird. Because it’s the weekend and I would normally sleep in until at least 8 a.m. Of course, I remember the days when sleeping in on Sunday meant getting up at noon - but those days are definitely behind me. Today, I was excited to get up because it’s the day that 3 WINNERS will be selected for our weekly giveaway! I’ve never done a drawing like this, so I’m pretty psyched to see who wins the first round. After getting my coffee, I went into my home office. Weird. Because Sunday is the only day I usually watch a little TV first. Some news, The Soup, and whatever trash happens to be on Vh1, like Rock of Love Bus. But today, I wanted to get up and get online. Checking email, I usually start with the latest and make my way down through the list. This isn’t a great strategy and might be why I typically have over 3,000 unread emails at any given time. But once in awhile, a subject line will catch my eye and I gravitate to it first. Today’s attention getter? It just read: Post?? It was from my best friend, Karen. Weird. Because I thought she was at her parent’s house on vacation in Florida with her family. I wouldn’t expect to see an email from her this morning. I did have other emails filling my box before Karen’s: Pavlina at Bobbi Marcus PR in LA sends out a request on behalf of the ASCAP Event Season 2009. She asks if Sugarluxe would donate work to the Pop Music Awards Show, April 22nd, at Kodak Theater / The Renaissance Hollywood Complex in Los Angeles. I’m already overbooked on donations this year, but maybe you’d like to learn more about some of the cool things going on in the Hollywood Celebrity circles. Jessica at Shecky’s in New York announces that their next big Girls Night Out event in Dallas has over 6000 women registered to attend. I’ve never participated in one of their events…but if I were ever going to do a designer trade show event…this would be the one. These girls are really awesome. Tricia at Avalon Communications in Austin confirms high profile media outlets, like The View and E!, will feature her company’s Gift Bags. I haven’t done Celebrity Gift Bags since I first started my company…but if I were to ever do it again, I would consider Avalon Communications because the Founder, Kristyn Hutzell is a graduate of University of Texas. I like to support fellow alums as much as I can. But those are the kind of emails I get every day. So, sorting through the opportunities, I am pleased to spot something from a friend. Weird. Because I am a workaholic whose living depends on identifying great opportunities. But without my friends, and particularly my best friend, there would probably be no Sugarluxe. When I opened Karen’s email, I did exactly as I do every time I read anything she writes. I laugh. She always makes me laugh. Karen decided to write a blog post on the Sugarluxe Giveaways. That’s the first part that cracked me up because she wanted to earn extra entries into the drawing with a blog post about it - ala THE OFFICIAL RULES. Based on how much I talk about Karen…you probably know I would do anything for her. Including giving her anything I ever make for FREE. Perhaps that sounds unfair…but she’s my best friend. And that’s why I am blown away every time she buys something; she has never expected anything for free from me. She has supported my vision for years. Long before I ever launched my company, long before anyone else knew what I really wanted to do with my life, and long before most people even knew how to pronounce my first name. I sure hope she doesn’t mind me sharing. Here’s how her email started out… Karen to Chandra: So, I have been wanting my 15 extra entries and have been pondering my blog post/FB post. This is what I have come up with, and since these are details about you, I wanted to give you post approval. Let me know if there is anything you want me to strike from the record (like the pop music crack). Title: 25 Things Redux: Sugarluxe Edition So this thing has been around the world and back, even garnering a snarky article in Time Magazine. Whatever. I find it gratifying to know details about people, no matter how inconsequential, and enjoy the order and conciseness of lists…so different from the way I actually live my life. I am changing things up just a little here by posting a 25 Things list about someone else, specifically Chandra Michaels, the artist behind brand Sugarluxe, and a BFF from way back. Sure, she’s done her own FB list, but this one will show how she looks through my eyes. So, here goes: I know. Denied. No outbound link. Right now, I’m still trying to decide whether or not to link to Karen’s list. It’s not like she needs visitors to her blog, it’s totally a personal space. And…I feel quite conspicuous about sending anyone to see how fabulous my best friend says that I am. I mean, clearly, there’s a bias. So, I’m a happier person today just knowing that she feels this way. If she REALLY wants me to link - I will. But for now, I’m simply reveling in the sweetness by myself. And here’s my reply… Chandra to Karen: I have started typing this line for 45 minutes. Erasing it every time because I just didn’t know what to say and couldn’t possibly write anything that would even come close to conveying how this made me feel. Even with your innate talent for writing, even though you are so hilarious that funniness can’t help but be attached to whatever you say, and even though you could make a turd seem trendy and cool - I will ignore all of that and just hope for a moment that I am half as great as you make me sound. I will keep these statements with me for the rest of my life. I will read them every time I feel down and I want to giggle again. I will never ever forget that you remember so much and that is a gift, in and of itself. You need to write…all the time. I know you’re so busy with two little ones, but I hope one day…you start writing your series of books. The kind our girls would grow up on. Some kind of Flowers in the Harry Potter Twilight Attic. As a girl who knows me better than any other, this is an example of friendship at its best. And you are always best. My wish for every woman in the world is that we all have at least one friend in our lives like Karen. Friendships with females aren’t always easy and seem to be more difficult to maintain the older we get. But there is just nothing that can compare to finding, keeping and loving your Best Friend Forever. SHARE THIS POST: Tweet This Post

This is a very interesting topic I will be discussing today. I run into this issue every weekend or maybe even everyday. I have a lot of good friends growing up and I respect a lot of them. They support a lot of what I do and happy to see me grow. I love my friends and I have a very tight circle of friends that I only hang out with, but even your friends will tend to be bother about the amount of growth you have done. Then I have online marketer friends and local entrepreneurs. They too enjoy the other people with the same interest and ideas. They help motivate me as a person while I do the same. These friends I hang out with at meetings and socialize about our entrepreneur skills – asking help topics and generalizing about the next ‘big’ wave of internet ideas. The conflict here is there is a difference in interest. All my friends are hard workers and some have hard lives. Most of them struggle but they make life livable. Some are doing well but hate the jobs they are doing. Marketers and my entrepreneur friends’ are struggling as well, some are beginners with big dreams, others are just getting the hang of it. Some of them even have jobs and do online marketing as a part time hobby. Everyone struggles. It is annoying when my friends’ ask what I have been up to and I say I am making a new website or busy marketing. They quickly retaliate and say about what and what income will I be bringing in. I simply just say I make enough and I be humble about it. I tend to draw that line and not brag about how much I make a day extra from my job, I do not want to appear superior. When I go out with my friends I tend to spend more money and share a lot of it, this puts an image on me. To my friends I have money because I make money online, but they want to feel that sense too. For example this past weekend, one of my friends knows of my success because we hang out a lot and he know I do not mind spending the money as long as we are having a good time. He came to me and ask if you have another big idea let me in – I will help you out. Now how should I feel about this? That is great he wants to help me out and be in the business model that I currently have but where is his motivation? There is no prerequisite on his part, just working 2 jobs and lives with his girlfriend’s parent’s house. I just said ‘cool.’ I was not excited that he wanted to help out. It seems that if my friends’ see me make money and they can tell I have money then I feel in a sense guilty because I am putting them into a situation where I think they will not be successful in. On the other hand, I get lots of emails and IMs and tweets all day about online marketing and affiliate marketing and all that stuff. I am not an expert but I can throw some ideas in to help a person out, as long as they do their research. I hate answering simple question. I personally do not mind conversating with marketers and talk about what my conversion is on this campaign was or how much I make etc. To some extent. I mean I expect it in return a lot of noobs will even speak about their failures just so they can have a grasp of what to do next. While others will go a head and say I made X amount of websites and I am selling X of them. This is great because my interest follows their interest and there is no conflict of interests. I can feel comfortable to spend money around these types of people. But the conflict still remains, my friends I grew up with and are part of my closely knitted circle trust me and I can sense they want me to ‘hire’ them when I get big. A lot has already proposed the question to me – when you get big don’t forget me. Again, I do not mind telling my friend what I am currently doing; I hope to motivate them to seek something better than working 2-3 jobs and coming home tired. I want to show them that it is possible for anyone to get into something I am doing. Where my entrepreneur friend’s ask if they want to network, I will be jumping for joy because there is similarities of interest. My friends are great people I just do not know where to draw the line between my internet business and hanging out. Should this be even brought up as a topic of discussion to my friends? A lot praise me and they mention money situations a lot, which I do not like. I hate it when people complain they do not have enough money but they do not do anything about it. I hate seeing my friends struggle but I do not want to nurture them, there has to be that drive. When we go out I do not mind spending money we ball out and we ball out hard. Some of my friends are big money makers in their own ways and this is how we have fun, then they struggle until next paycheck. Sometimes telling my friends my goals and my ideas tends to bring some sort of arrogance and I do not want to bring that into my relationships with my friends at all. I want everyone to be comfortable and being who they are no matter what a person money value is. Even my entrepreneurial friends may feel some slight jealousy of the big guys, but that is motivation. Their really isn’t much arrogance but more of a helping hand. These friends of mine have the spirit of making more than the highest paid 9-5 guy. They have that drive. I do not mind sharing some thoughts or ideas, because there is already that bond of money making ideas. When told to my other friends, they think negatively about it already, playing devils advocate. But in the end, friends support you but the conflict of interests arises and I feel I do not want to talk to them too much about my business because there maybe a jealousy factor within. I d not want to be a bad guy I love my friends because they helped me a lot with growing up. Okay that is enough for now. Tomorrow I might recap this and do a video or maybe talk about motivation. Just writing what is on my mind. AKPC_IDS += "439,";Popularity: 7% [?]

July 16th, 2009
After we lost our Madeline, we didn’t know what to do with our lives. Everything we did, we did for her. Our lives, once focused on our wonderful daughter, were adrift.
Too devastated to plan our child’s funeral, our friends did it for us. So unprepared for the financial burden of paying for it, thousands of people from all over the world made contributions big and small to assist us. There was more donated than we needed.
So what to do with that extra money? We knew right away.
Today we are proud to announce friends of Maddie, a non-profit organization we’ve started in honor of Madeline. friends of Maddie supports families of critically ill babies by easing the transition into NICU life and providing an ally until the end of their child’s hospital stay.
Our time in the NICU was so frightening, lonely, and overwhelming. As Maddie’s parents, we can think of no better way to honor her memory than to help other families in her name.
We ask that you please help support other families the way you so kindly supported us. Please visit friends of Maddie to learn how you can help. We’re kicking things off with an amazing giveaway!
Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts, for making this possible.
Mike & Heather Spohr

Never Do Business with Family or Friends
18 April 2009
2 Comments
A couple years ago, I received a phone call from a woman in tears. She’s a good client of a friend of mine and the caller was going through some deep personal drama. Her mother had just days to live, and she was looking for someone to make a memorial video for the funeral. Knowing I offer this service, my friend, Cathy, suggested she give me a call. I offered my condolences, gently tried to explain to her that time was of essence, and she’d need to get photos to me as soon as possible and I’d make a nice piece for her. “Thank you,” she said, “my mother was a wonderful woman and deserves the best”. I then quoted her a price of $300 and she hesitated… and said she’d get back to me. A week later, another associate told me she had contacted him, stating I was asking too much money, and she offered him $100 to do it and he turned her down. She then went to the person who manages her website, and he agreed to do it for $150. Two days later, this woman’s mother did pass away, and with the funeral in 3 days, she called me back in tears again. She received her DVD and was shocked at how horrible it was. The fellow scanned about 40 photos, scanning the smaller ones together 4 at a time. He then made a slide-show of the scanned images. He didn’t resize any of the photos, frame them or make them “pretty”… he didn’t even separate those that he scanned together. Most of the photos had the paper edges showing, some were partially off the screen, others were slightly crooked, and a couple were even sideways. As for the ones that were scanned 4 together the “slide page” that these appeared on was even worse than the full-sized images. The smaller older pictures were so tiny you couldn’t make out the subject. Taking pity on her predicament, and realizing she was a good client of Cathy’s, I told her I’d clean them up and add some music… for $200. She was terribly upset, said she’d already invested $150 and all this time, and the images were already scanned… etc. I tried to gently explain that I now had no time to finesse, and I still had to copy her chosen music, and as much as I felt badly for her, if she’d come to me in the first place… etc. She was terribly upset and I just couldn’t walk away from it, so I agreed to do it for $100, as a favor to Cathy, and be done with it. 2 days later, after 2 full all-nighters, I gave her a nice 20-minute piece that had a wonderful ebb and flow through this dear lady’s life with meaningful music. As I showed it to the family, they were all in tears by the video’s end. I received a $50 “tip”, for my effort. So she ended up paying $300 after all, but I, the “artist”, who gave up 2 nights of sleep, had less time to work my magic, while the web-guy spent about an hour for his $150. A few months ago, a similar thing happened, when a local charity group wanted to make a promotional video for a fund-raising event they had coming up and called on me to help them. I quoted them $500 minimum, or $50 an hour to shoot and edit it. They said they’d get back to me. I got a call from them two days ago. They decided to do it themselves, I was told, so they bought a small HD camera a cheap mic, and an expensive pro-level editing software program. One of their members was trying to learn how to edit but couldn’t get past how to capture the footage correctly. I made a courtesy visit and looked over their footage which was poorly shot and had unusable sound. Now they were desperate, their program deadline is looming and could I please, out of the goodness of my heart, edit it and “fix” it. For what they paid for that camera, mic and software, they could have hired a pro in the first place. I wonder sometimes, why people are so willing to pay an attorney $100 an hour, or and accountant $75 an hour, without really knowing the amount of time these skilled professionals really put into their cases, but the clients will swallow and pay anyway. Never Do Business with Family or Friends

However, these same people seem to think that anyone can buy an affordable camera nowadays, and shoot a quality piece themselves with no training, skills, vision or ideas. Amazing. Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.Powered by WP Greet Box We live in an interesting age. I don’t know how many times friends from my high school want to e-mail or contact me—if only I’ll pay cash to talk to them, or at least that’s what Classmates.com wants me to believe. We used to be able to move on from place to place, keeping in contact with the people in our lives that really mattered, and letting the acquaintances and others move on with their lives and grow into fond memories. Not today. In the rush for the latest status symbol, if someone finds your name on a list of available people they’ll rush to add you to it. They wear the number of “friends” or “followers” that they have like previous generations would collect beanie babies. For me, the amusing part is that they let all these people in to look at their lives, and those insights usually provide quite the amusement in themselves. Once added, twice forgotten, I believe. But this trend has also sparked a lot of weird interactions inside families and “in real life” friends. The online engagement has replaced face to face meetings to the point that you can truly be alone, and yet feel really connected with a person. You can be living miles away and yet know what you’re friend is having for breakfast, and that they’re having a root canal before lunch. It’s nice and strange all at the same time. And then there’s the question of whether you should “friend” your family. Kids used to go to college and have a time of growing—a time of being disconnected from parents during the day-to-day activities of life. Now, mom and dad can follow your adventures and know what you’re up to. I know some college students would probably be opposed to this, but would that be out of guilt or shame? Modern Media Mom came up with a handy list of Do’s and Don’ts of connecting with your kids on Facebook, but it seems odd to me that you wouldn’t want to stay a part of your kids life, or that they’d want to stay a part of yours—and what happens if they un-friend you. I guess there’d need to be some kind of virtual room that you could send them to—as long as that virtual room didn’t have an internet connection.

My wife and I are laying the groundwork for our second adoption. Part of that process is getting an updated home study. During the home study social workers assess your ability to afford another child, parent properly, and provide the basic necessities. To help them in their task, they ask us to solicit letters of recommendation from people who will vouge for our character. My friend Bob Bankus sent me a letter for my approval before I told him it was ok to send in. Thank God I read it and did not just tell him to mail it off. Here is what it said: To whom it may concern: I have know Thor for over 8 years and Kimberly since they started dating. Ever since he got out of the slammer, Thor hardly ever blacks out from drinking too much anymore. He’s doin’ real good. Most of the loaded guns are hidden or put away so the kids can’t reach them yet. The rest of the guns aint loaded so they aint gonna hurt nobody. Kimberly done stayed clean and sober now for a while. I think she has her 30 day chip. So she’s got that goin’ for her. I know she has been working real hard for that. Jake is wearing clothes on a pretty regular basis. And they got plenty of food stamps so you don’t gotta worry about the kids havin’ enough to eat. Some people might think the reptile sanctuary in their basement with the alligators and snake collection is a little strange, but I will have you know that theirs is one of the most impressive and complete private collections of reptiles anywhere in the Midwest. So I gonna shoot ya straight, with all them positive traits, I think it is a no-brainer. Give’em a kid! Thanks, Billy Bob Thanks for sending the the REAL letter in a separate email Bob
