« A Sunflower Grows in North Attleboro | Main | Do you Use To Do Lists? » Enjoying Some Cuban Food By Drew | July 30, 2009 Photo-A-Day #1574 Tonight Allison, Eva and I went to dinner at Havana Cafe. We had a few places to go tonight and we were running late so it was a dining out night. Hate to do it too often but it happens. If you are in North Attleboro, you need to stop by Havana Cafe. It is one of those little hole in the wall places that has 5 tables and the most amazing food. The folks there always remember us too. Our server has a little girl who is 2 years old and watching Eva interact with her was so cute. They stood nose to nose and then did that little kid squat to the floor but not actually touching it. It was adorable. Today started really crappy. I overslept and was headed to work on my usual telecommuting day. I hate losing that one day a week at home. I was planning to go to the gym as well but spending too much time last night finishing a few things. One of those things was downloading the Gary Vaynerchuk Podcasts. I hadn’t realized that Gary does other podcasts beside Wine Library TV. Don;t get me wrong I love watching Gary’s passion for wine but I’m not a big wine drinker. I think the other podcasts might be a little more for me, we shall see, tomorrow morning. Today I had to go to two meetings. Before the first one I drank an EBOOST. No possible hint of sleepiness during the whole demo. The hardest thing about my job is staying awake. On the days when I have meetings like these, watching demos I’ve seen many times in the past, it is great having a little perk up to stay frosty. EBOOST is a sponsor of The Ultimate IZEAFest Prize Pack. Also EBOOST is providing me with a Discount Code for 30% of online purchases of EBOOST. That is SPARK30 to be used on the EBOOST Online store for the next 30 days. Like this post? What to Eat After Seeing food Inc. food Inc. is the horror movie of the summer, with more blood, guts and dead bodies than any Friday the 13th sequel. In fact, it’s pretty hard to watch. But it is more than just a great documentary—it’s a shot across the bow of the American food industry. If you’ve read Fast food Nation or The Omnivore’s Dilemma, you’re primed to see images from the killing floor, Midwest feedlots where cattle stand check-to-jowl in their own manure, and chickens that collapse under their own weights. Animals transformed into pure protein generators are disturbing enough, but the human cost is equally heartrending. A family of four in Los Angeles spends just $11 for a bag of burgers but can’t afford broccoli or sweet potatoes at the supermarket. Meanwhile, the father’s diabetes medicine runs $200 per month. Barbara Kowalcyk lost her son to E.coli poisoning from eating a hamburger. Because the meat in a single fast-food burger can be blended from up to 1,000 different cows, the diseased animal will never be identified. Chicken farmers avoid speaking on-camera about how they raise chickens for fear they will infuriate industry buyers and lose their main contract. In the same way the movie Blood Diamond increased awareness of the exploitation inherent in conflict diamonds, food Inc. and the accompanying website may begin to awaken consumers and retailers to how food is produced in this country. That’s dangerous knowledge: Can we really enjoy a meal if we know that animals and people who produced it live a horrific existence? Change Comes One Meal at a Time At Friend of the Farmer we started with this simple proposition: every day we make choices of what to buy and where to buy it. You buy a car perhaps once every five years, but every single day you have a chance to support the kind of world you want to live in. Budget is of course an issue for many. But a 10% shift in spending to small, sustainably run farms would reap huge benefits. Knowing your farmers and the effort they put into bringing a carrot or lamb chop to market makes you more aware of every element of food production. You can often taste the difference and you certainly value the food more when you serve it to friends and family. The product might even come with a story, a history (see Leahy Farm’s Milking Devons). Wegman’s, an innovative retailer based primary in northern New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, has not only been buying locally for years but is also running their own organic research farm. Imagine now that for every new store that Wal-Mart builds they also start up a 50-acre organic farm that delivers produce from less than five miles away vs. the 1,500-mile trek most produce makes in this country. How Quickly Can We Adapt? In a recent interview Omnivore’s Dilemma author Michael Pollan said that food issues are today where environmental issue were in the 70s: We have a long way to go. But change often seems glacial and then all of a sudden it’s just ‘how we live’. Imagine now not recycling newspapers? One accelerator for change may be a deadly pathogen—a food-borne illness—that truly terrifies people in the way that swine flu did earlier this year. The esoteric dynamics behind the recent financial meltdown were incomprehensible to most of us, but folks can readily understand that government regulation and testing has a direct and desirable impact on food safety and quality. Other accelerators are consumer knowledge and fear of the unknown. For example, when consumer concern about synthetic bST drove Walmart to stop selling dairy products from cows treated with the hormone, the market for bST dried up. What to Eat After Seeing food Inc.? Frankly, after seeing this film, the only thing that seemed safe at dinner was the bottle of wine. The main menu required far more attention. “Is the Berkshire pork chop from a small farm?” “How were the chickens raised?” “Are the vegetables organic?” A trip to the supermarket may feel more fraught, more complicated. Or less so, if you start to search out locally produced food at your supermarket or, better yet, make a trip to a farmer’s market, or sign up for a share in a CSA. That way your food dollars have the greatest impact right at the source—with the farmer.   YOUR COMMENTS

Cookie Diet Tips July 27th, 2009
Powered by Max Banner Ads I’m a vegetarian (have been for about 6 years) and when I started I was really stupid about it. All I focused on was cutting out the meat, not my new diet. So I just ended up eating junk as the alternative, and it turned into a horrible habit. I am now trying SO hard to be a healthier, skinnier vegetarian and cut out the junk, but my sense of self-control sucks. I can’t seem to stop myself from pouncing at the brownies and cookies. It’s like my mind goes blank and I only realize what I’m doing after I’ve eaten half of it. How can I control myself and take care of my cravings? I think part of the problem might also be that I don’t even know what to replace the junk with. What the hell do I eat??? Chopper’s Sports Grill - A Sports Bar With Great Food!
July 12th, 2009 Categories: Restaurant Reviews
A co-worker and I went to lunch the other day at Chopper’s in the Cherry Creek East neighborhood. It was a gorgeous day and we debated whether we should stroll over through the huge construction zone, or drive around two extra blocks to avoid the stares and catcalls. We drove.  Parading through the cone zone in heels and skirts didn’t seem like a great idea. I love Chopper’s for many reasons. One being that while I was in graduate school, I waited tables there. Of course, way back then, it was still Rick’s Cafe. Rick’s was the notorious “older” singles hang out in Denver in the 1980’s - Denver’s original Fern Bar.  Before Cherry Creek was a big deal, before we’d heard of “Cougars” and while big hair was still very much in. “Rick’s Girls” got special treatment. We got free shots on Saturday nights.  The restaurant and bar were so crowded that we’d have to heave the giant trays above our heads and then start kicking the customers in the backs of their legs to get them to shift enough to open up a path for us. In 1996 the restaurant changed hands and Chopper Traviglini opened up the new restaurant as a local sports bar.  Chopper was the legendary trainer for the Denver Nuggets for many years, and he was well known around town.  The bar and restaurant got a slight remodel from the Rick’s days, and then reopened with TV’s everywhere and better than standard bar food. Chopper’s made the list for Top Sports Bar in this year’s edition of 5280 Magazine’s Top of the Town section.   5280 says you’ll come for the TV’s but, “you stay for the killer nachos and juicy hamburgers - or the 18 beers on tap.” I particularly like their Castlewood Canyon salad with grilled chicken.  One of the better salads in Cherry Creek, in my humble opinion, and I’ve tried them all. So dribble on over to Chopper’s, but avoid the construction. Contact me any time you want more information on Denver Real Estate. Or search for a new home at GretchensDenver.com. Share This

// The Connection Between food and Mood By Shannon Kietzman, for Revive Your Life Smart eating can make you happy! Have you been feeling blue lately? Do you have a difficult time getting up and facing the world each morning because you simply feel so glum? If so, you might want to take a closer look at the foods you eat. Believe it or not, the foods you eat and your mood are closely related. Therefore, monitoring your diet and paying closer attention to what (and when) you eat is a key element in mood management. Controlling Blood Sugar and Mood One of the reasons a connection exists between our diets and mood is because the foods we eat have an impact on our blood sugar levels. Changes in blood sugar levels can have either positive or negative effects on various bodily functions and may result in both physical and mental changes. Although these changes are typically associated with extremely low or high blood sugar levels related to diseases such as diabetes, even modest changes can have a significant impact on the way you feel. For example, the “sugar rush” and impending crash one experiences after a high simple-carbohydrate meal can have a profound effect on mood. By maintaining a relatively constant blood sugar level, it is possible to take greater control over negative moods and bodily fatigue. Eating 5 to 6 smaller, well-balanced meals throughout the day should allow you to avoid the spikes in blood sugar that negatively affect mood and energy levels. Breakfast is by far the most important meal of the day as it assists the body in regulating blood sugar levels as we progress through the day. Avoid large doses of simple sugars present in foods such as candy and soft drinks which create spikes and troughs in blood sugar levels. In addition, foods made primarily from refined white flour (pasta, cakes, biscuits, etc.) are quickly converted to glucose thereby raising blood sugar levels and impacting the way we feel. The Impact of Nutrients on Mood In addition to the impact of food on blood sugar, the nutrients present in certain foods can have a beneficial effect on your emotional well-being. Many studies have linked chemical compounds in certain foods to the bodily processes that they impact and the results most experienced by those ingesting these compounds. By choosing to eat certain foods, you can positively impact your mind and mood. Here is a list of foods that play an important role in helping to improve your mood: Milk (and other dairy products) is a mood lifter because it contains tryptophan, an amino acid that is used in the production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” neurotransmitter in the brain, so making more of it improves your mood and sense of well-being. Chocolate gives your body a boost of endorphins, which are hormones that make us feel good. In addition, it contains anandamide which is a chemical that targets the same area of the brain as the THC found in cannabis. The anandamide is found in very small amounts, so you would have to eat an awful lot of chocolate to get an effect from the chemical, but researchers believe that the other chemicals in chocolate help keep the anandamide around for longer periods of time. Whole-grain rice or pasta also boosts serotonin levels, while the slow-release aspect of the carbohydrates helps to sustain the good feelings. Since whole grains are digested more slowly, they provide you with a longer-lasting effect than you get from simple carbs. Eating salmon is also a good choice for managing your mind and mood through food. According to recent studies, people who eat oily fish like salmon are less likely to have mood disorders. Researchers believe that this is the result of high levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids that are found in oily fish. Other sources of omega-3 fatty acids include walnuts, mackerel, and flaxseeds. Your mom always told you to eat broccoli - and for good reason! Broccoli is full of B vitamins, including folate. Researchers have found that people with low levels of folate are more inclined to suffer from depression. Therefore, giving your folate levels a boost should also help lift your spirits. When you get together with friends and family on Thanksgiving, it may be more than just the good cheer that increases your spirits. The turkey you are eating is full of an amino acid called phenylalanine, which your brain then converts to dopamine. Dopamine is known to help prevent depression while also improving moods. In fact, according to one German study, phenylalanine can be used effectively as an antidepressant drug. Like whole grains, liver is a good source of B vitamins. You can also add more vitamin C and antioxidants to your diet with blueberries, which both help to reduce stress. Brazil nuts, on the other hand, contain a high level of a mineral called selenium. This mineral is known to relieve depression and maintain mood. Stay hydrated. Drink enough water throughout the day to allow all necessary bodily processes to run smoothly and efficiently. A good rule of thumb is to drink 1/2 ounce of water per pound of bodyweight per day making sure to increase this amount during intense exercise. Certain Foods Create Foul Moods Just as there are foods that are good for managing your mood, there are also foods that have the ability to create or enhance negative moods. For many people, eating spicy foods such as those containing cayenne can cause irritability. Acid forming foods, such as yogurt and pickles, can also make some people feel edgy. Large portions of high-fat, high-sodium meals (i.e. the majority of restaurant and processed foods) can make you feel sluggish and moody. The digestive system has difficulty processing foods with such poor nutritional profiles. Excessive amounts of caffeine (a stimulant) and alcohol (a depressant) can greatly impact your mood. Used in moderation, foods containing these substances can enhance one’s sense of well-being, but it is important to understand that each of us tolerates caffeine and alcohol differently. It is important to remember is that everyone’s body is different. Therefore, the way your body responds to certain foods may be different from the way other people’s moods are affected by that food. In order to get a better idea of your personal connection between mood and food, it is a good idea to keep a diary that tracks your diet as well as your moods. Eliminate or limit those foods that negatively impact your mood while centering your diet on those that provide you with energy and a sense of calm when desired. Ingredients 2 pounds boneless pork butt roast 1 large onion, chopped 2 celery ribs, chopped 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 1/2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 pound dried orecchiette 2 garlic cloves, chopped 1 cup dry white wine 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1/2 cup grated Grana Padano plus additional for serving 2 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth 1/2 cup drained canned cannellini beans, rinsed 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil Directions Preheat oven to 325°F . Pat pork dry and sprinkle with 3/4 teaspoon salt. Roast in a small flameproof roasting pan tightly covered with foil, covered, 2 hours. Uncover and continue roasting until some of the meat begins to pull apart easily, 1 to 2 hours more. Transfer pork to a cutting board and cool slightly. Pull pork into small pieces and coarsely chop. Cook orecchiette in a large pot of boiling salted water (2 tablespoons salt for 6 quarts water) 8 minutes (pasta will not be fully cooked). Reserving 2 cups pasta-cooking liquid, drain pasta in a colander. Pour off all but 3 tablespoon fat from roasting pan and place pan over medium-high heat. Add onion, celery, and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 8 to 10 minutes. Add garlic and oregano and cook, stirring, 3 minutes. Add tomato paste and cook, stirring, 3 minutes. Stir in wine, broth, beans, vinegar, and pork. Transfer to pasta pot and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add 1 cup reserved cooking liquid and bring to a simmer, then add orecchiette and cook, stirring occasionally, until al dente. Remove from heat and stir in cheese and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and thin sauce with additional cooking liquid if necessary. Serve with additional cheese. Is Eating Purely Organic food Better for you?
Wednesday, August 05th, 2009 | Author: Organic Blogger
There have been many recent studies circling around the debate of organic food, as many people have speculated that eating organic foods is not as healthy as they are advertised to be. Sales have doubled among organic food since the federal government began to deem foods as organic, which has therefore led to the increase of the products within many grocery stores among the nation. The fact that this trend has reached many urban city centers through venues like Whole Foods and other “trendy” grocery stores has led for an outcry that organic foods are equivalent to healthy eating overall. Recently, people have jumped to the conclusion that food is better for you if you are organic. Eating “organic” has no guarantee of eating well or healthfully and as many healthcare professionals have discovered, the root to the unhealthy eating habits of Americans circle around their affinity for soda and sugary sweets. While organic food can be better for you in the long run, it is mostly because they are “real” ingredients, rather than those ingredients contained within many of the fatty foods we ingest every day. The health of many Americans may increase over time as we begin to shift away from a focus on fast-food meals and soda, instead focusing on this new form of organic food which contains little if any added preservatives. Additionally, producing organic food also aids the environment as much less land, water, and chemicals are used to produce this type of food and therefore less greenhouse gases are emitted. Therefore, many debates have opened up as to whether eating organic has really been found to be better for you in the end. The decision to eat organic meals is one which slowly begins to edge out more calorie-ridden foods which may be the reason for the overall increase in healthy lifestyles after the switch, which actually has little to do with the manufacture of the food in general. However, since eating organically has become such a trend for 30-something-year old “yuppies”, it has since transpired to a whole new culture in which people are eating healthier and beginning to care about the stipulation that most Americans are overweight. By eating less of their favorite processed foods and drinks, instead looking to organic food as a switch in diet, it has been studied that more Americans will lose weight and concentrate on eating better in the long run. In the end, it is not organic food per say that has led to a healthier lifestyle, but the exclusion of food that has been processed in a different manner. Do You Like Asian Food?
February 13th, 2007
I’m a fair fan of Asian cooking, although I think a lot of it is more some of the techniques than anything else. I do an awfully good beef with broccoli, though! My husband swears my sauce beats the others he’s had at restaurants. Must be doing something right. It’s also nice that many of the recipes are rather healthy. Not 100%, certainly, but quite good in general. So I was quite happy today to find a site offering asian recipes. It’s Hochiak! Delicious Asian Food. The very first recipe I saw on the site, Pork Ribs in Plum Sauce, made me think of my husband. Pork ribs are one of his weaknesses. I may well have to try that recipe soon. Pork may not be the healthiest meat, but you have to give in once in a while. In any case, I hope you find some use in the site. There are so many wonderful recipes out there just waiting to be found, and those of us who enjoy cooking can keep finding them, experimenting with them and making our own versions to the delights of our families.            Posted in Advice ||

Share 3-color camel Artist: Tokyo-Go-Go http://tokyo-go-go.deviantart.com I’m an Illustrator based in Durban, South Africa and studied Graphic Design for three years which ultimately lead to a love for and further study of commercial illustration. My work focuses mainly around strong concepts teamed with a cartoon/developed personal style. Often combining contradictory scenarios, objects, or people. Basically when i first started really getting into art and design, it was mainly because of Japanese art, I loved every bit of it, from classic anime to Japanese pop art and even the old school traditional work. As time has progressed I’ve learned to evolve and try all sorts of new techniques and mediums, so the name Tokyo-Go-Go expresses how i began, and how those beginnings will keep changing, always on the Go ! Go ! Junk food Kills! is really just a fun, busy design, playing with the oxymoron of Junkfood, and how deadly it can be. The initial design was just going to be a mash-up of different foods and sweets that covered the front of a tee, but i then decided to add the skull shape to give the illustration a different level and also add my own character touch to it. 9 comments

Thanks for visiting Stubbadub! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to our RSS feed or or follow us on Twitter for all news on Web of Mimicry, Faith No More, Ipecac and related bands and musos. It’s getting closer! After hearing snippets of songs from Chuck Mosley’s new album, Will Rap Over Hard Rock for food via his vlogs and myspace, the time has almost come for the album to hit the streets. But until then, we will have to be content with the official press release that has just been made available: Reversed Image Unlimited To Release CHUCK MOSLEY’S WILL RAP OVER HARD ROCK FOR FOOD Former Faith No More Vocalist’s New Solo Album ~August 11, 2009~ New York, NY—Rap and Rock music, though viewed through the public lens as worlds apart, are not as distant from one another as they seem. The energy, aggression, and valiant spirit make them the perfect vehicles for unabashed expression, and rap-rock veteran Chuck Mosley realizes this. He is the embodiment of the unification of these two musical forces, as well as the various musical influences he has accumulated as both an artist and an avid music fan. On August 11, he releases his first solo album Will Rap Over Hard Rock For food via Cleveland-based label Reversed Image Unlimited. Mosley’s return with Will Rap Over Hard Rock For food showcases the Godfather of rap-metal seamlessly blending rock, hip-hop, metal, punk and funk. Recounting his previous work, Mosley, as he describes it, would “rant to the beat.” On his latest effort, Mosley’s musical stew combines this approach with an exploration of his vocal range.  It’s apparent that he chose to let his amalgam of cultural saturations melt into this new album, which he describes as “just very normal for me.” Will Rap… was produced by multi-platinum award-winning producer/engineer Michael Seifert (Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Fountains of Wayne, and most recently Reversed Image electro-rockers THIS IS A SHAKEDOWN!). Featuring guest appearances from a cast of characters Chuck has affectionately deemed Vanduls Ugenst Allliderasy, John 5 (Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson), Roddy Bottum (Faith No More, Imperial Drag), and Michael Cartellone (Lynyrd Skynyrd) all contribute to the record. Korn frontman Jonathan Davis (courtesy of Warner Bros. Records), who attributes Mosley as a massive influence, also makes an appearance on the lead single “The Enabler”. In the 70s, Mosley was just a kid growing up in Southern California with no limitations on his tastes in music. A musical sponge, he studied classical piano for 10 years, while soaking up influences from jazz, rock, pop, and early rap. Eventually signing on to front Faith No More, he crafted these influences to pioneer a whole new take on heavy music. Bringing the rhythm and raw emotion of rap vocals to the riff-laden, chaotic-nature of rock, Mosley became an innovator which many musical acts would emulate, including Korn, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and Kid Rock. He would later front legendary hardcore/reggae group the Bad Brains as well. On July 28th – August 10th, fans will be able to pre-order Chuck Mosley’s Will Rap Over Hard Rock For food CD Online at www.ReversedImageUnlimited.com <http://www.ReversedImageUnlimited.com>, and receive a personally autographed  CD, plus completed download and a special edition postcard. Canned food Reviews
July 14, 2009 | Reviewer: Abi Jones
Heat Eat Review doesn’t exactly do a bustling business in the field of canned food reviews. Sure, we’ve got some soup reviews, but no Spaghetti-O’s. Or Beanee Weenee. Or Spam Lite. And lacking those fine examples of American ingenuity on Heat Eat Review, I must refer you to another website: Cheap Eats. From the Editor: I guess you could call this a food Blog of sorts. I guess. That’s right the main focus of this site is, in fact, Cheap Eats. Note that I didn’t say, “GOOD eats” (sorry Alton), “TASTY eats”, “HOMEMADE eats”, “LOW FAT eats”, “QUICK eats”, “ATKINS eats” or “ECOLOGICALLY SAFE eats”. This blog (which is sadly on vacation) is all about eating cheap, including semi-homemade items (make your own Gatorade!), actual recipes (chicken adobo, yum), and reviews of canned food that I’m afraid to even look at (Disney Princess Spaghettios). So, if you’re looking to save a bit of money browse the archives of cheap recipes and canned food reviews.
