Boston Geek Gatherings Abound
A Think Tank entry written on Tuesday, May 13th, 2008
barcampbostonconferencerefresh
If you’re in Boston or somewhere in the nearby area this week, there’s a slew of great meetups happening for web/tech geeks, something I don’t get to say very often unfortunately.
Web North of Boston
For those who are too far north of Boston to make it into the city, the 2nd meetup of the WebNOB group takes place Tuesday, May 13th (that would be tonight) in Manchester, NH. The place to be will be Jillian’s and Brady Carlson, New Media Coordinator and on-air host at New Hampshire Public Radio, will be the special guest this time around.
Refresh Boston
It’s been a long time coming, but Refresh Boston is back in action. Thanks to the fine people at Filament Group, we’ve got a place to meet tomorrow night at 7PM. A certain Mr. Haney will be giving a talk on design principles and how they relate to the web. Food and drink (the non-alcoholic kind) will be provided, and we’ll be heading to JJ Foley’s for real drinks afterwards. If you’re on Twitter, you can follow the @refreshboston account for updates and happenings.
North Shore Web Geeks
Continuing on the theme of after-work geek meetups, the 5th North Shore Web Geek meetup will be happening tomorrow evening around 6 or 7PM in Newburyport, MA at The Grog. After 4 successful meetings, the group has decided to move to a regular gathering on the 3rd Thursday of every month. It’s primarily a social gathering and less about 1 person presenting, so everyone gets to talk about what they’re up to.
BarCamp Boston 3
After missing the first 2 rounds of BarCamp Boston, I expect to check it out this time around. The fun starts at 9AM on Saturday and goes until 6PM on Sunday (there will be a break from 6PM on Saturday until the following morning at 9AM) at Matignon High School in Cambridge, MA. If you didn’t know, BarCamp is an unConference, organized on the fly by attendees, for attendees. I had a ton of fun while attending BarCamp DC earlier this year, so I’m looking forward to this one in Boston.

Wildflower asked: Sorry if you saw this in singles, but wondered about the maturity of the group in general.. (not those who answered). Just recently divorced, and wondering if there is hope for me somewhere… NOT looking to meet a guy online, but asking a general question of you men… would you consider dating someone like me (i.e. is there hope?) Good – I’m attractive – long blonde hair (mid-back), blue, fair complexion, not skinny, but not plump.. LOL.. 30, told I have a smile that lights up the world and love to flash it often.. love life, look at bright side of life, absolutely content in the garden watching butterflies, listening to wind in the trees, hikes, camping, am Native American, though I don’t appear so, but love my culture – pow wow’s, gatherings, etc. Do believe in God and talk with him daily, but do not attend church often, great cook, elementary school teacher, provide for myself = have a home and a nice car, love my independence. Tend to be a bit wild in bed, open minded, and thoroughly enjoy making my guy out of his mind (in bed). Not so good ? I have a serious history (not with guys- just life in general) – don’t necessarily need to share it, but you would definitely be surprised.. Have a tight family that I don’t see that often, but Mom comes to visit 1/mo. Some skeletons in family closet – an odd bunch, but the ones God gave me. I want my guy (when committed) at home, not out with the guys – don’t really drink (1/mo maybe). Don’t really like sports but not totally against them. Can’t say I’m super jealous, but don’t want any other women in your life unless related. : ) Every man I’ve dated (not that many) still talk to others about how much they miss me. A fact: My daughter (3) is my world and that is primary to all else. Anyone in my life has to be understanding of that fact. So, do you think there’s hope? LOL. .. Again, NOT looking to meet a man online, just a general question. Oh, and I tend to be a bit wordy I’m asking because I only dated guys I knew from my small town and not that many.. then got married at 23, stayed married for 7 years, and feel like a fish out of water in the dating scene after divorce. wow - LOL.. yes that too.. funny, after I posted, I said, oh, I should say I’m into beaches and water… of any kind, ocean, lakes, streams, rivers.. even canoes.. giggle.butterfly gardens Share and Enjoy:

Home » Diet and Weight Loss, Featured Foods that can suppress your appetite! 24 April 2009 9 Comments
From AOL Health Apples An apple a day keeps cravings at bay. High-fiber foods like apples generally require more chewing time, giving your body extra time to register the fact that you’re no longer hungry. Therefore, you’re less likely to overeat. One study in Brazil found that women who ate the equivalent of three small apples a day as part of a healthy diet lost significantly more weight than those who didn’t eat apples. And apples are also a natural anti-inflammatory. Pine Nuts Pine nuts contain the highest amount of protein of any nut or seed. In Siberia, a handful of pine nuts are traditionally taken with a meal to create a feeling of fullness. What’s the secret ingredient? Pine nuts contain pinolenic acid, a naturally occurring polyunsaturated fat that actually stimulates two powerful hunger suppressing hormones. Both hormones play a major role in signaling to the brain that you’re no longer hungry. In one study, participants consuming an extract of pinoleic acid reduced their food intake by 36 percent. Flaxseeds Flaxseed oil is the best known plant source of omega-3 fats but raw flaxseeds are even better, especially for appetite control. In addition to the omega-3, one ounce of flaxseeds provides the added benefit of 8 grams of fiber. The more fiber you eat at any meal or snack, the slower the rise in your blood sugar, helping to keep the hunger hormones at bay. Flaxseeds can be tossed onto salads, thrown into smoothies or sprinkled over vegetables. Studies at the National Cancer Institute show that flaxseeds have cancer preventive properties and lowers cholesterol. Oatmeal Real oatmeal — not instant — is one of the healthiest carbohydrates. It’s low on the glycemic load scale and has a high fiber content, so it enters your bloodstream slowly and keeps you full for a long time. One bowl of oatmeal consumed daily can reduce cholesterol 8 to 23 percent. For breakfast or as a snack, a small bowl makes an excellent hunger reducer. We suggest adding a little butter or a handful of pine nuts for longer-lasting fullness. Or how about sprinkling on some ground flaxseed or cinnamon? Salad If you want to avoid overeating, try eating a small salad before a meal. The fiber helps slow the entrance of glucose (sugar) into the bloodstream, making you less likely to be hungry.
According to one study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Assocation, when 42 women ate a simple 100-calorie salad before dinner, they consumed 12 percent less calories during the meal, even without trying to diet or limit their intake. Try varying your salad choices with spinach, mesculin, endives and cabbages — all types of greens will help curb your cravings. Soup Soup is one of the best kept secrets to appetite control and weight loss. Research at Pennsylvania State University shows that men and women consuming two servings of low-calorie soup daily lost a whopping 50 percent more weight than those consuming the exact same number of calories with snack foods. The secret is soup’s combination of high water and low calories. Make sure to choose broths or vegetable soups, not their creamy-rich cousins. Drink Green Green drinks are becoming more popular and are now available premade in many grocery stores. The best ones are made with a mix of high-cholorophyll, detoxifying organic grasses like wheatgrass and vegetables (like spinach). You can make your own from powders sold at health food stores or buy ready-made drinks (but read the label and watch out for added sugar and calories). Typically, these drinks should be low in calories, very low in sugar and loaded with enzymes and phytonutrients. They have the ability to take the edge off your appetite very effectively. Whey Protein Powder Whey protein powder can help you lose weight and build muscle. New studies suggest that whey may have an impact on food intake through its effect on hormones that influence a feeling of fullness. In one study, participants consumed a liquid meal consisting of either whey or casein and 90 minutes later were allowed to eat freely at a buffet table. The whey group consumed significantly less calories. Whey also supports the immune system and can lower your blood pressure. Umeboshi Plums Can’t control your sweet tooth? In Eastern medicine, foods are regarded as having certain properties and a craving for one kind can best be treated by eating its opposite taste. Umeboshi plums — basically pickled plums — are the ultimate in “contractive” foods. The founder of the Natural Gourmet Institute for Healing and Culinary Arts, Dr. Annemarie Colbin, recommends them highly for sugar cravings. They are widely available at specialty stores and Asian grocers. Need a quick fix? Try dipping a chopstick or spoon into a jar of umeboshi plum paste and licking it off next time you have a sugar craving. The sourness will give you a jolt. The first time I remember seeing Mother Teresa was the night she received the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1979. That evening, she stood before the world as example of doing good… and that it was possible to bridge cultures, classes and religions with caring and love. When Mother Teresa received the prize, she was asked, “What can we do to promote world peace?” She answered “Go home and love your family.” She and her Missionaries of Charity worked tirelessly among the poorest of the poor. She established hospices centers, a home for the dying, orphanages and leper houses all over India. She the expanded the order throughout the globe. At the time of her death, at the age of 87, the Order of the Missionaries of Charity had over 4,000 sisters, an associated brotherhood of 300 members, and over 100,000 lay volunteers, operating 610 missions in 123 countries. Kids Say The Darndest Things - “Only The Good” Friday
March 27, 2009 · Print This Article
During the fifties, The Art Linkletter Show was on every afternoon. Part of the program was a segment called “Kids Say The Darndest Things.” The children were all dressed up, sitting on stools and Art would ask them questions. Oh my… some of the things that would come out of their mouths. Once I had children… my home was a constant Art Linkletter show… as my kids kept me in stitches with the funny things they would say. Now, the grandkids keep the family in stitches with the cute, funny and embarrassing comments they make. I have a tendency to see life in a “way too serious” manner… so today.. On this “Only The Good” Friday… I’m going to lighten up a bit and share with you a few funnies my grandkids have come up with. (Prepare for “R” rated material.) LuLu age 5 Coming out of “Time Out” … Lu scowled at her mom and said, “You’re a bad person for getting mad at me…. but you have pretty hair. Randall at age 4 One evening, I offered to take a few of the grands to dinner… and I ask them where they would like to go. Randall piped up and said he wanted to go to check on grandma. My mom, who was 88 years old, had been ill… so I thought it was so sweet and thoughtful that he wanted to go see her. Before we went to eat… we dropped by my mom’s place for a quick visit. We were there for only a couple of minutes when Randall started to complain and wanted to leave. Go figure! We kept out visit short and then went to our regular eating establishment, Chuck-A-Rama. As soon as we pulled in the parking lot… Randall cried out… “Yeah, we’re here at “Check On Grandma.” Wyatt at age 4 Wyatt loves horses… and he had plenty of imaginary ones when he was younger. One day, he was in the car with his mom when he announced, “Shawn and Kicker got into a fight and Kicker kicked Shawn’s eye out. Emily replied, “Oh my Gosh, that’s terrible.” “It’s okay now,” said Wyatt. “Oh really, what happened?” Wyatt replied, “Jesus fixed it.” Josie, at age 5 Josie was home ill with the flu and Lisa, her mom, offered to play a game with her. “What game would you like to play?” ” Oh… you know.. that game with the oranges, apples and pears,” replied Josie. “You mean the matching game?” “Oh no!” Josie replied, “That would burn our house down.” Landon at age 4 At the family reunion, a large food buffet had been set out. Lisa ask Landon what he would like to eat. He said, “I’ll take everything except the gross.” Braden, at age 4 Braden’s mom had a hard time getting him out of bed to get ready for pre-school. He finally arose and said, “It’s not that I’m sleepy….I’m just tired.” Norah at age 5 My son, Brad… and his wife Martha took their family and dog to check on the new house they were building. When they left the new house, they forgot to load their dog (Tequila) into the car… and didn’t realize their mistake until they arrived at Grandma And Grandpa Wright’s house, 10 miles away. Of course, the girls were upset, and Martha assured them that Tequila could find her way home from the new house because it wasn’t too far away. On the way home, Martha suggested they pray. Norah volunteered. She said, “Heavenly Father, please help us find Tequila. Help us get off our butts and look for her.” It obviously worked… because when they went back to the new house, Tequila was there waiting for them oblivious that she had been deserted. Claire, age 5 Claire was at the doctor’s office for her yearly physical. The doctor was checking her heart with a stethoscope when Claire ask, “What is that?” “It’s a thing that checks your heart to see if your blood is pumping okay.” the doctor replied. “Do you have blood?” Claire ask. “Yes, I have blood and you have blood.” After a bit of thinking, Claire replied, “My mom has blood too and it comes out of her cootie.” Oh My…..”Blush.” The Innocence Of A Child! Hope these put a little smile on your face on this… “Only The Good” Friday. Kathy Insightful Nana P.S. Easter cakes can very from bunny cakes, chick cakes or plain dripper pan cakes. This cake is not fancy but it really hits the mark with my family. This sweet, cold, and a refreshing Easter cake is always a hit with my family members. Not only is it great tasting… but it’s really simple to make. And, this cake that’s good anytime… especially if your in a hurry to get to a summer party and need something special to take. If you have helpers in your kitchen at Easter time… it’s easy for the kids to participate in the making. Here we go. These are the ingredients. 1 Lemon Cake Mix. Veg. Oil. Eggs. Water. These ingredients are for the cake mix. Follow the directions on your particular cake mix because the amounts may vary a bit. You will need one can of Sweetened Condensed Milk…. and Whipped topping. An eight Oz. size will cover a 9×13 dripper pan. However, I like lots of cream so I use the 12 Oz. size. Who’s counting calories? Jelly beans add the final touch. Mix the cake according to the directions on the box. Pour the cake into a greased and floured 9X13 dripper pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about 25 Min. Cool the cake for about 10 min. Punch holes into the cake. I use the end of my beater because it makes holes larger than a toothpick or fork. Punch holes from 1 inch to 1/2 inch over the entire cake. Poke the beater clear to the bottom of the cake. The cake must be still warm. Pour the Sweetened Condensed Milk on top of the cake. Spread the milk so it will sink into the holes of the cake. Place the cake into the fridge to cool. Spread the topping on the cake Decorate with jelly beans. You can add coconut first… then add the jelly beans. Some of my family do not care for coconut … so I don’t put it on… unless that part of the crew is not coming for dinner. Place the cake back into the fridge until it’s time to delight your guests and serve it up. Here’s a quick video of me making this Easter Cake. I like action! Have a happy Easter. Enjoy this cool refreshing Easter cake. Till Later, Kathy Griffiths Insightful Nana P.S. You might consider keeping extra Jelly Beans on hand. My grands like to florish their peice of Easter cake with a few extra Jelly Beans. Easy Meals - Meal Planning
April 21, 2009 · Print This Article
Easy meals, which are fast, come from your past experience in your own kitchen. According to Becky Low, of the Utah Dairy Council, the definition fast food is the tried and true recipes you use over and over again. Fast Fixin’s was a class I attended, hosted by the Utah Dairy Council. Assuming I would receive a stack of new recipes that would aid me in quick, easy meal preparation… I soon learned this was not to be the case. What I found was a common sense approach to meal planning. The cry, “What am I going to fix for dinner?” has been simplified. Generally… a mom cooks the same main dishes over and over again. Why? Because, she knows what her family will eat… and she knows how to fix them. As a rule, there are no unfamiliar ingredients and she most likely has the items on hand in her pantry. The meals are, for the most part, quick and easy because mom doesn’t have to “think” in order to prepare them. It was a surprising to learn that most family menus consist of only six to ten favorites… which are rotated frequently. We are creatures of habit. Here are some suggestions to make your meal planning easy and still offer your family more variety. 1. Make a list of your family favorites…main meals you fix over and over again…for instance, Spaghetti. Post the list on the fridge and let your family add to it. They may come up with meals they love that you’ve forgotten about. 2. Look at each meal, and ask yourself if the nutrition can be enhanced by adding a healthy ingredient to the main dish. You can also add a side of fresh fruit, cut veggies, salad or some other item that give your family increased healthy meals. 3. If you have a list of twenty meal suggestions… choose five to eight and make sure your cupboards are always stocked with the items you’ll need to prepare the recipe. When you come in from a late meeting, or from taking the kids to lessons and haven’t planned in advance, just look at your list and choose one of the dinners you know you have the fixins for. Having your easy meals list on the fridge makes it simple for you think of “what to fix,” and have the satisfaction of knowing you have the ingredients on hand. Now that’s fast food! 4. Now that you have your basic meals… add new recipes throughout the month for your family to try so they learn to enjoy a variety of dishes. Prepare these meals when you’re not in a rush. I like looking through my recipe box for old tried and true ideas I have forgotten about. And… of course… there is always the opportunity to try some of those recipes you’ve clipped out of the newspaper or magazines. If you have any easy meals or and meal planning tips, please feel free to share them with us. We’d love to hear from you. Till Later, Insightful Nana P.S. Easy meals and Meal Planning are one thing… but does anyone out there know of any easy clean-up tips… besides using paper plates? P.P.S. Robin Red Breast - But Not In My House

Robin Red Breast came a calling today. In fact two of them dropped by. I wasn’t aware they came for a visit until my daughter, Katie, called out, “Hey Mom, did you know you have two birds in your house?” “Say what?” I came running. Sure enough, two Robins entered the family room via an open patio door. There they were, flapping their wings and dashing their bodies against the window, on the opposite side of the room. The movie,”The Birds,” by Alfred Hitchcock. flashed through my mind. I assure you I was not about to get close to those critters and have them flap their wings around my head. Oh No! I grabbed a broom and handed to Katie. She approached the birds cautiously and opened the window with the handle. One fellow caught the vision immediately and flew out. The other bird was still confused… running up and down the window sill. Katie encouraged it along until it found the open side of the window and flew away to freedom. Oh shoot…. where was the camera. No one will believe it. As I inspected the window and the window sill… the birds left evidence that they had been there. Not a pretty site…so I declined the photo opportunity to prove the crisis had taken place. What is the point? Warning! Don’t leave your doors open so robins won’t drop by unannounced. However, if you ever happen to repeat my experience… I pray you have a brave daughter around to save you from excited, frightened birds. Keep safe now. Till Later, Kathy Griffiths Insightful Nana P.S. I have my disinfectant gear and I’m on my way to clean up the evidence. Fire Fire Fire - Kitchen Grease Fire
June 17, 2009 · Print This Article
“Fire!” “Fire!” “Fire!” Those are words I never thought I would be screaming. But, due to grease fire in my kitchen, those words came from my mouth. Even though the kitchen fire occurred in my home a couple of years ago, my fire experience has been recently recalled because of the number of fires in our community lately. The family was coming over for Mother’s Day dinner and I was preparing Baked Beans, and Broccoli Salad, and both recipes called for bacon. Two lbs. of bacon was cooking in a large kettle, when my brother-in-law, Dew, came to my back door to discuss my lawn mower. I stepped to the door and visited with him while he was examining my mower blade. At that moment, a back yard neighbor slipped into my garage to tell me of a problem with the fence we were replacing. Forgetting my stove was on… we all stepped to the back fence to discuss the issue. After 15 minutes, we walked toward the house and I noticed my kitchen windows appeared black…. then it dawned on me. We ran inside to find the house filled with smoke. There were a few flames behind my stove which Dew put out. My cell phone, which was by the stove, was fried… and my portable phones did not work. So, I went yelling to the neighbor, to call the fire department. The kitchen grease fire had already exploded before we returned to the house… thank heavens! Notice the tall kettle by the side of the stove. Imagine, all that damage coming out of that kettle. A kitchen grease fire can be devastating. Lots of lessons were learned from this experience…. here are just a few: 1. Keep your wits about you when your cooking. Kitchen grease fires are the most dangerous. Most kitchen fires happen because of neglect! Guilty! 2. We shouldn’t have entered the home when we realized my kitchen was on fire. We could have been caught in the explosion… or we could have caused a back draft if there had been flames. 3. Portable phones do not work if the electricity is off. You need one phone in the house that is connected to a land line. 4. Even though the flames were no longer visible, I called the fire department because I was concerned that the fire had moved into the ceiling. But…don’t expect your fire department to have anymore wits than you do. When they arrived, they took their good time getting their gear on….and hooking up their hoses and grabbing their chain saws. I ask them not to shower the house with water until they knew if there was still a fire. No sense in doubling the damage by adding water. DUH! 5. Don’t let some nit wit place a large fan in the kitchen door so the smoke could be blown down the hall, though all your bedrooms and out your master bedroom window. No kidding… when I saw the smoke billowing out the master bedroom window… I thought the entire house was gone. Hummmm…. Perhaps a wiser move would have been to place the fan in the hall and force the smoke out the kitchen door. 6. Call your Insurance Company carrier immediately…. not your agent. Since the fire was on Saturday, I waited until Monday to get a hold of my agent. It slowed the up the cleaning up process by several days. 7. Find out who the very best Disaster Clean-up Company is in your area…. not only one who will do a great job…but one who will go to bat for your with the fire insurance company. I had the best! Utah Disaster Kleen-Up. If you’re in the Utah or Idaho area… I highly recommend them. There were kind, helpful and very competent. 8. Prepare yourself for delays. Approval for each process has to be made one at a time, because of insurance regulations. Triple the time they say it will take to complete the job. Sub-contractors are not always reliable in the timing area. 9. Know that smoke damage is as disastrous as the fire itself. All the walls and ceilings on my main level… the living room, family room, four bedrooms and two baths had to be cleaned, sealed and repainted. All carpets were replace. (The carpet nightmare was another issue.) 10. Be aware… that every object in your home must be cleaned or thrown away. They discard all plastics, because of the change in composition. The plastic becomes toxic. All of the kids toys, bedding, pillows, mattresses are thrown away… no questions ask. Insurance companies don’t want to be held liable for a child becoming ill. 11. Every item and object in your house is cleaned… down to the last pencil… by the disaster workers or YOU. Every item that needs to be replaced is put on an inventory list ….even down to a stick of butter and a chicken drumstick in the fridge. The inventory is taken by disaster workers or YOU. Every item that needs to be replaced has to be priced at full replacement value. Guess who does it! Yep! YOU! That is unless you have great neighbors and friends who are willing to stand in Walmart for hours and check prices. I had over 50 pages of items and great friends and neighbors were there to help. I had just updated my home owners insurance policy… just 6 months before the fire… to include “Full Replacement.” It means, destroyed items are replace at full value and not discounted because of age. I also had provisions that allowed for the disaster company to do all cleaning and inventory. However, disaster companies DO NOT do the inventory pricing. There is no choice… you are responsible for it. 12. Remarkably, I held my tongue when they said they were not going to replace certain carpets. As the process moved along… it was necessary to replace all carpets. In other words… “Be Nice.” 13. I had wall paper in my family room and I chose to have it painted rather than replacing the vinyl. Some fire insurance companies won’t let you pay for exchanges or up grades… mine did. They just off set the allowance and I paid the difference for the upgrades… like the lighting in my kitchen. I love my new kitchen… but a fire is NOT the way to remodel. My insurance was Met Life… and I was dropped from their plan. I found a new fire insurance company who raised my rate only $50.00 per year … for which I was grateful. So… the moral of the story is…. Don’t leave bacon cooking while you chat with the neighbors. Be fire aware. I’ve included a video that you MUST watch. It’s very short… but it shows what can happen if you put water on a kitchen grease fire. I was soooo lucky! Till Later. Kathy Griffiths Insightful Nana. P.S. Utah Disaster Keen-Up said that unattended B.Q’s are the number one cause of fires in the summer time. P. P. S. Make sure you have a good fire insurance company… it makes all the difference in the world. Check with your agent to make sure you’re adequately covered and have “Full Replacement” in your policy. P.P.P.S. Now if I could only do as well with a before and after of me… I would be thrilled. Happy Father’s Day - “Only The Good” Friday
June 19, 2009 · Print This Article
Happy Father’s Day Dad! My daddy has been gone for over 20 years, but he’s remembered in my mind’s eye… often. On this “Only the Good Friday,” I want to celebrate my Father… James Woodrow DiStefano. Don’t you think my dad was a good looking man…. actually movie star material? Last night, I attended the DiStefano family reunion planning meeting. As the meeting progressed, my thoughts went back to my Dad’s nonstop effort in getting an estranged family together after many years of separation. My father, James, was the third child in a family of nine children… eight boys and one girl. (He’s the second from the right.) Dad’s family suffered through the depression, like so many others in rural Tabiona, Utah. His father abandoned his mother and the children, so Dad took on the role of Father and bread winner. He worked in a government CC camp, building a dam. Just before he reached his twenty-first birthday, his mom pass away. The younger children were farmed out to be raised by relatives and friends. As time went on, the children married, but due to distance and circumstances… they had an “on and off” relationship with each other. Dad felt it was important to get the family together to heal old wounds. The first couple of years were sparse in number but the numbers eventually grew. Now we have well over 100 family members that annually meet in Tabiona for two days of games, a raffle, dancing and of course feasting…. and feast we do. We have been gathering as a family for over 35 years now. All of the original family members, except one, are gone now… but a great legacy has been left. (Dad is on the far right.) Extended family members may not see each other all year long but when we come together at the family reunion it feels friendly, comfortable and “at home.” On this “Good” Friday before Father’s day, I want to say, “Thanks, Dad for having the love and foresight to bring an estranged family together for a “Good” time. Those who have gone on, would glad to know that we have continued this tradition in your absence. Hope this Father’s Day finds you with a “Good” relationship or “Good” memories of your dad too. Feng Shui Symbols and Activities Bring Happiness, Success, and Wealth

Some of the best feng shui isn’t all about turtles and fountains, mountains and facing directions. It’s about fun. Good feng shui can change to great feng shui with the addition of fun, enjoyment, festivities and happy times. That’s because the vibrations of laughter and enjoyment permeate our surroundings and if your home is the location for happy gatherings full of festive people, then you’ve done a lot toward making your feng shui better – and that changes your outlook, your happiness, and your bottom line, too!
Most truly wealthy people have lots of fun and enjoyment in life – most likely because they can afford it. But, that’s not the only reason why. Every time we have pleasant and enjoyable times in our house, we build on happiness energy. This kind of energy creates excellent sheng chi that raises our energy level and that attracts prosperity and business and financial opportunities. Try these tips for increasing your “fun” shui.
Have fun at home.
Make your home party central. By inviting guests and enjoying pleasant conversation and good times, you do a lot to lift the energy of your home. Even simple steps like playing games with your family fill your home with laughter. Or, try making a family meal in the formal dining room on Saturday or Sunday nights a weekly treat. All of these things can raise your chi and the chi of your home.
Liven up yourself.
A friend of mine once joked that she had enough black clothes in her closet to outfit eight women for a funeral. Bring extra energy to yourself and lift your personal chi by wearing bright and vivid colors. The colors imbue us with their energy. On days I want to be extra productive and energetic, I wear brown slacks (big wood) with a red shirt (fire) because big wood makes a big fire! Money on your mind? Wear black pants and a green shirt. Want to get along with everyone and inspire happiness? Pair beige or gold pants with a red shirt.
Bring in new energy.
New objects for the home brings new energy to your home. A new object for yourself re-energizes you. Or, try doing something new. Explore a nearby city, go to a new restaurant, do something you’ve always wanted to do or try. New energy is so important. It keeps our homes and us revitalized and energetic. Keeping ourselves surrounded by new energy helps keep our energy level high and looking forward in an expectantly positive outlook – and that draws more love, money, and happiness to us.
Figure out what makes you happy.
If a bouncy new kitten makes you break out in a smile, why not go to your local shelter and adopt a new cat? It’s important that we make choices that make us happy. Sometimes the hard part is figuring out what that is that makes us happy. Make a list of ten things that make you happy – whether that’s hot chocolate in the morning or a cute figurine on your desk. If you see something you really love, and I mean really love, buy it. There is no better feng shui than being surrounded by things you really, truly love and enjoy.
Symbolize happiness.
Once you know what happiness looks like to you, find a symbol for it. Maybe that symbol is a word, a figurine (I just love lucky cats!), or something you have already. One important symbol for happiness in feng shui is Buddha. A fat, happy Buddha often carries a bag in one hand or over his shoulder or sits on a bag. This symbolizes his carrying your burdens and worries. For this reason, I keep one on my desk to cheer me with his chipper countenance.
Another symbol of happiness is the lucky cat. The darling cats bring happiness energy to the cash registers of many Asian businesses – and money. I have a small collection of them myself. Annual animals are also another harbinger of happiness. Each year, small figures of the animal of the year are made and sold in Asian gifts shops. Many of them are happy and smiling. Last year I bought a smiling rat and this year I have a happy ox! Find one that appeals to you and makes you happy.

.090209. Chinese New Year Chronology
It’s the final day of chinese new year. Chap Goh Mei is always referred to as a day where you will see young girls ‘throw’ mandarin oranges into the river with some messages hoping to find their ‘true love’ or what not lover. Anyway, for me, it only marks the end of a wonderful festive season!! And every year, I would only go to Petaling Street to watch the lion dances there!! Every Chap Goh Mei, there will be a few troupe of lion dance and also dragon dance that would perform in front of Kiew Brother’s Shop, along that road.
Anyway, my last update on the chinese new year stopped at day 3 and here’s what I have left to update!! Was really busy for the past weeks with photoshoots, house visitings, farewell and other gatherings. Would probably start updating them tomorrow or the day after!! =D
Chor 4 – Primary Schoolmates + Genting
Chor 5 – Homey + Monopoly @ Os
Chor 6 – Nic Open House + BBQ @ Chee Wei’s

I’m a Musicon Celebrity thanks to Maxis Broadband
Submitted by Drew on Friday, 27 March 200918 Comments | [393 views]
*nuffnang is back with maxis broadband for another great party!!*
I must say that music does play a big part in our everyday life. Be it at home or on the street or even in the car, music is just everywhere around us. Music can be a source of stress reliever or even it can keep you company or relaxed when you are down. That’s where the phrase “let the music heals your soul” seems to make sense. On top of that, music can also build up a crowd; in clubs, in parties, or even in gatherings. Music can make you famous and earn you big bucks if it hits top of the chart. That’s where music celebrity comes in.
Among some of the parties that Nuffnang had organised in the past were Pyjama party @ Borneo Baruk Club, Wild Live Party @ Modesto’s and also the Silent Halloween at Borneo Baruk Club. This time, thanks to Maxis Broadband again, Nuffnang has made it possible for bloggers to experience what is it like to impersonate their favourite musicon celebrity with their latest Music Bash to be held in Maison Club.
Well, I never really had any favourite singer or band or a specific kind of music. Basically, anything nice and pleasing to the year, I would love it, fast or slow. However, there’s this band in Japan called “X-Japan” which I thought was really, really cool!! I love them not for their rock songs but for their ballad collections. The founder of the band, Yoshiki, plays the drum like a crazy drummer that’s on drug but at the same time, he can also play the piano so super gracefully as if it’s a love concert. Anyway, that was the reason I like that band back in highschool when my friends first introduced me to their songs before I start poisoning the rest of my other friends.
*x japan is one of my favourites for the ballad collections… really really good!!*
I thought if I were to go for the Music Bash on the 4th of April, I would dress up like one of them when their hair was super punk and their costumes are like super shoutingly out!! LOL.. That’s what we called special. It was before the 90’s that I thought their costumes were a little to “ganas” before they eventually changed into suit.

Anyway, if I were to be a musicon celebrity, I would love to have the best for my family and that, being able to stay in a huge house like any other celebs do and drive a dream car of my choice like any rich people would do. At the same time, I would love to have my fans running towards me for my signature like most celebs would be treated so and most importantly, I would always remember to be humble and friendly and be thankful for what I am. Afterall, it’s just another career that I have pursued in life but the difference is that it’s more glamourous.
All that, only if I were…. a musicon celebrity.
*life wouldn’t have been the same again..*

DGMB Bloggers’ Movie Meet
Submitted by Drew on Sunday, 3 May 200923 Comments | [218 views]
.260409. DGMB’s BMM3 @ Cineleisure Mutiara Damansara
It was just a year ago when a bunch of random bloggers decided to do a random movie gathering which then, somehow, someway formed a real strong bond within the group which is now known as DGMB. From a third party point of view, I thought that each individual in this group made DGMB as unique as it is, and a great friendship that they would hope, could last forever.
I am glad to know a bunch great friends. In some way, they are special to me personally. Though I may not know them long enough just yet, but having fun together in gatherings, “makans” and “mains” was definitely a moment to cherish upon. The most recent FUN apart from the movie meet has to be Nuffnang Music Bash, where we popped out from the 80’s as holograms to perform a few songs for the eventful night. If it wasn’t for Nigel, I wouldn’t have such a FUNTASTIC experience. Anyway, it was good.
*montage of DGMB BMM 3rd edition – photos by Nigel*
Now 1 year later, DGMB is still the way they were ago except for the fact that they grew 1 year older. Thomas, Pamsong and Joshua got together in planning the movie meet 3rd edition and I thought it was a great one!! We watched “He’s Just Not That Into You” in Cineleisure with 36 of us turned up. However, it was a lovely couple in the cinema that practically STOLE THE SHOW at the end of the movie with the guy proposing to his girlfriend in the cinema after going out for 10 years.
*congrats to this lovely couple – photos by jeffro*
It was during the movie credits when the screen suddenly show some random photos. All of us scratched our head for a moment before we found out that “something SPECIAL” was about to happen. I roughly knew what was it when I saw a few of the groom-to-be’s friends carried a guitar and a few chairs at the front while another girl passed a bouquet of flowers to the couple. It was really touching especially when the movie’s ending was also about some proposal. It was surely a lovely scene and all of us applaud when the girl said “YES, I DO”.
Well, that’s about it. After the movie, the rest of them went for a quick bite at Laundry while I rush home to get some stuffs done. Nevertheless, it was definitely a great outing and catch up with the usuals. Till then, looking forward to the next movie meet.
