Blogitive has a new design
Posted on Saturday, June 23rd 2007 1:30 pm by menj in Paid Blogging
I logged into the Blogitive control panel to finish off a job offer I took last night (it was still using the same old interface at the time) and was amazed at the new design of the interface. Its a bit strange that they choose to change their interface on the same day I changed the interface for one of my websites, coincidence? Anyway, I like this new interface. Web 2.0 look, rounded corners buttons and now the text look more attractive and easier to read. Red is a nice colour, too.

Really, really BAD web design
Posted on Sunday, January 6th 2008 11:04 pm by menj in Internet
You really, really want to see an example of a really bad web design? Check this website out. I would think that, this being part of a government programme and all, they would hire someone of calibre and spend more money on developing a more semantic web and better design, the standard being in CSS/XHTML or with a PHP/MySQL backend. But no, they had to hire some buffoon whose design skills are way below the level of an amateur. Seriously. Even I can come up with a better design than this lousy display that will make your eyes sore.

Junkspace - Kommerzialisiertes Design
If space junk is the human debris that litters the universe, junkspace is the residue mankind leaves on the planet. The built (more about that later) product of modernization is not modern architecture but junkspace. Junkspace is what remains after modernization has run its course, or more precisely, what coagulates while modernization is in progress, its fallout. Modernization had a rational program: to share the blessings of science, universally. Junkspace is its apotheosis, or meltdown. … Although its individual parts are the outcome of brilliant inventions, hypertechnical, lucidly planned by human intelligence, imagination, and infinite computation, their sum spells the end of Enlightenment, its resurrection as farce, a low-grade purgatory. My New Job - Project Manager - Web design Tips Book
Posted on August 30, 2008 Filed Under Inspiration, News
Yup, just like the title says. I’ve managed to find a new line of work now doing project management for a web design company. I’m not sure how I’ll do there as the experience will be new to me, but it seems like I will finally be able to get a away from working 60 hours a week as a sales representative (my former job). So while I haven’t become super famous on the web from blogging. The skills I’ve learned to promote the blog which includes some SEO, Social Networking, Domains, Debugging etc played a pretty big part in acquiring the skills for a position in project management. I’m now familiar most of the terminology used in the web design field so being able to communicate the needs of a webmaster fits right in. There’s some things all new employees get to learn at their new jobs, and that goes for me as well. They gave me a few books to read to brush up, and pointed out things that the firm I’m working at likes to point out to their potential customers. One of the books I’m reading I think is a very good read, and I think that other bloggers would be interested in it as well. Even though you might not be designing websites, you still usually design or maintain your own blog’s appearances. The book is called Dont Make Me Think, by Steve Krug, and it is a very short read. What the book tells you is how people react to certain things on a website. It makes you think different on how a visitor to a site reacts to certain features of a page. Like if theres a big red blinking button in the middle of the page, people are probably going to click on it more than the navigation bar. It also explains about how certain graphical changes to the web design can be very effective. I recommend this book to anyone who is new to blogging, and trying to set up their own site. It will make you understand a little more about link placements, and why cool widgets that you like, are not always very welcome to the visitors coming to your page. I would also recommend this to any experienced web designer as it will brush up on things, as well as give you a new outlook on web site design. Anyways that is all for now, and hopefully with me working 33% LESS hours a week now at the same pay rate. I can afford to spend more time doing what I like to do. Playing Video Games, and Making Money Online. Ever seen any lighting design like this Pieke Bergmans‘? For us, it’s a fantastic creation we ever looked. The Light Bulb collection performs an elastic feature to any surface. It’s like a spill of thick liquid, melted onto anything beneath it. The Light Bulb which is part of the Pieke Bergmans’ aptly-titled project “design Virus”, is made of glass-blown which tend to fit certain surfaces and contain LED lights within. We think that this lamp can be applied for indoor or outdoor use. Via

Web design con la mia Ubuntu
Linux, Opensource, Opinioni, Software, Ubuntu, Web
Tag:agave, apache, cssed, epiphany, firefox, geany, gimp, grafica, ies4linux, inkscape, kompozer, Linux, lynx, mysql, opera, php, Software, Ubuntu, web, webdesign Gianluca S. @ 17:39 del 29 dicembre 2007

Web Design: Finding the Next Oscillating Fan

When I got my first job out of college, I bought a car. It was a new, 1997 Mazda 626. I was excited to finally have some of my own money, so I added all the features I could afford at the time. I added leather, a sun roof, and the ‘luxury package’ which to this day I’m convinced consisted of nicer floor mats. But the coolest feature of all was a standard feature on Mazda’s at the time. The center blower vents (for heating/Air conditioning) on the front dashboard were oscillating. oscillating vent The oscillating fan is nothing new, but its not commonly found in cars. Mazda engineers took note and added this to their cars. Why not? It was a simple motor, that with a push of a button allowed the vents to blow air back and forth, efficiently cooling the whole car. We see/use fans every day in our lives, but when passengers got in my car, it always drew comments. That’s how unique it was. It was a minimalist way of providing climate control. Other manufacturers were busy working on heated seats, dual zone cooling/heating, but Mazda took a step back and saw that adding this simple button and motor could provide a lot of benefit for a little investment. As web designers and developers we need to find that next oscillating fan for the web. The lesson I learned from that fan’s design was that you do not always have to invent a new wheel. Sometimes the next great idea is just a re-using of a current idea. Simple using a common idea in a way that have never been used before can be very effective. I think the last great web design idea like this may have been the tab. Old methods of navigation were becoming more complicated when amazon pushed the tab navigation. They took a familiar element we are comfortable with in our daily lives (tabs existed in books, file folders, etc…) and applied a graphical representation of it to the web. Tabs existed before Amazon, but in 1998 Amazon really pushed the metaphor and transformed it into a common web interface. Firefox became a major player in the browser wars partly becasue of their use of multiple tabs. Tabs are now slowly fading form some uses. Firefox says it is looking to abandon the tab in favor of a traditional tree view. What is the next oscillating fan or tab? We need to constantly look for that complicated or cumbersome element, take a step back and find for the practical solution. They may not all become standards, but sometimes the best ideas don’t always hit. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. After all, I’ve owned 5 cars since that Mazda, and driven countless others and I have never had an oscillating fan in any of them. However every time my car is hot, and i crank up the A/C I fondly remember that feature and wish I had it today.
