Just My Show dot com is great if you are a vintage fanatic looking for something a little different online. I was introduced to Just My Show by the creator Eric Greenberg, who flew me an email regarding his recent podcast interview with Larry Weiss the creator of Underoos. I happen to be a big fan of Underoos, so I was delighted to listen in. I have to say the Larry Weiss podcast interview was a great listen, Eric is no novice interviewer and Mr. Weiss obliged listeners with a fascinating tale of how Underoos got started, the pitfalls, and how the product received it’s great name. No spoilers here, but did you know that the creator of Underoos also created Fruity Pebbles? That makes Larry Weiss an icon to little kiddies and retro lovers alike. Check out Just My Show for great reruns in Retro culture including: An interview with the co-creator of Mad Libs – Leonard Stein. A Chat with Brutus the Barber Beefcake (side note my Mother put the squeeze one of Brutus’ buns at a wrestling match in the 1980’s. Sorry Mother- but you did!) A Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Podcast with your favorite television mom, Marion Ross of Happy Days and Dan Lauria, the dad on Wonder Years. Podcasts featuring the stars of retro shows- MASH, WKRP in Cincinnati, The Dukes of Hazard, Leave It To Beaver, and many more actors and creators of your favorite shows. If your are a fan of retro- you’ll love these podcasts. Speaking for myself- I  haven’t listened to a lot of podcasts and I found just listening in as if listening to the radio, a pleasure in of itself. Listening in sort of reminded me of folks sitting around the radio during the Great Depression, which made it even better for a fan of retro like myself. Be sure to stop by and listen in. Earth Hour Should Be a Habit and Culture
Earth Hour 2009 was a success according to local news in the Philippines. Earth Hour, in my view should be a habit. This is something personal to me because of my early orientation in biotechnology as a young boy in the Philippines. When I was a kid, the “Green Revolution” initiated by then First Lady Imelda Marcos was really a hit in Ilocos Norte. During the Green Revolution, people here started to grow plants and trees in their own backyards and up to now (many generations have come and gone), many Ilocanos still benefit from the program. It was all about culture. As children in a simple community, we were indoctrinated early that working with your hands and getting your hands dirty with soil were actually cool. Really, it was and still is. If you have been to Ilocos Norte, you will see how many trees we have here especially along highways and most especially in mountainous areas. Most of these trees have been planted 20-30 years ago and they have served well tourists and locals in countless ways. Even as I write this, I am planning to grow more common veggies in our small backyard like cabbage, tomatoes and eggplants. I’m proud of it. Not because I’m blogging doesn’t mean I won’t be farming or gardening. I still will and honestly, I love it. It was culture in Ilocos Norte that made my love for the environment grow. This is something I’d like to pass on to the next generation and I know it will benefit them in the long run. As to the Earth Hour celebration, the main objective is the same as the above-cited experience of this author. Earth hour primarily aims to protect the environment from too much heat and carbon emissions. This could be a regular guy’s first line of defense against global warming and you know what, it’s not enough that we celebrate it one hour a year. IMHO, it should become a part of our culture. In integral calculus, when we sum up the whole by taking all its basic parts, we can come up with something really significant, something that would become a very beautiful graph - a picture of people working together to fight global warming and drastic climate changes. This graph is determined by an integral equation. In math problem, an equation along with other parts (variables, data points, constraints, conditions) constitutes what make up the process of solving something. Now if we take culture (within ourselves) as one variable and take that culture to a higher level - family, community, city, province, and beyond - dude, that would be something. Change always begins somewhere. Most often than not, it starts within the individual. For starters, may I recommend the following ways to save electricity (not just during Earth Hour celebration): Turn off all electrical equipment and tools when not in use. Unplug these things when you don’t plan on using them for long hours. Use fluorescent lights in your homes to save on electric bills. Fluorescent types of light bulbs also emit lesser heat but more shine. Avoid keeping computers and TV sets in standby modes. There are many more ways I want to say here but I think most of them are self-explanatory. All you have to do is be conscious. Look around and see what YOU can do to help save the environment so you can be a part of the integral equation. I’m in for the fight against global warming. Are you?

Greenstone in Maori culture
This is a second post about Greenstone (Nephrite, Jade). The first one is titled The Stone Which Guards New Zealand Nephrite is found in NZ in relatively large quantities, and it plays an important role in Maori culture. Since 1997 all nephrite deposits were given to Maori management. Pounamu is a Maori word for greenstone and bowenite. In Maori culture there was a classification of pounamu according to color, and it was divided into four types - inanga, kawakawa, tangiwai, and kahurangi. Inanga (in translation from Maori means whitebait) is a pearl white grey or green colored stone which is usually semitransparent. Kawakawa is a green-colored stone with different shades, with shape resembling a leaf from the Kawakawa tree. Tangiwai is almost transparent, bluish-green to olive-green type of serpentine, found mainly at the entrance to Milford Sound. The word tangiwai came from the Maori legend about the petrification of a lamenting woman tears. Kahurangi is the rarest form of greenstone. It has a light green color with light streaks resembling clouds. This stone is very translucent. Pounamu was used in making the sacred war staff symbolizing authority, and for hei-tiki - а pendant in the form of the stylized figure of ancestor bearing the soul of another ancestor. When a Maori wanted to make a piece of jewelry for himself, he first had to find the “right” stone. For that he came to tohuriga, the sorcerer, who by getting into trance got directions from souls of the death about the whereabouts of the desired stone. In my next post about greenstone I will tell about additional widespread forms of Maori greenstone medallions. Maori Jade Hei Matau

How Do You Turn a Clubs culture Around?
Posted on 29 April 2009 by Jermayn
One of our most popular articles on Kick2Kick was us “Exposing the worst culture AFL Football clubs“. In that list we highlighted Fremantle, St Kilda & Richmond. Richmond & Fremantle again have the same problems this year and only finals will tell if St Kilda have turned a corner or not. However during the past week with another post “A Call To Arms - Tigers need to get Lethal“, we started to talk about how to change a clubs culture. Lets now go into more detail, use other clubs as examples and see if we can help not only the AFL clubs but also maybe some local clubs. 1) No in-fighting This may be an easy one to notice but if you look at all clubs that have had board/ coaches/ past players fighting they have not had a successful year. Hear are just a few examples: Carlton had it in the early 2000’s after their salary cap issues, St Kilda had it between coach Thomas & President Butters, Melbourne had it in 2008 in their 150th year with Stynes & the previous President(s), Essendon had it in 2007 with the board not renewing Sheedy’s coaching job, West Coast had it in 2007-2008 with sacking Cousins and other off field troubles & Richmond has had it in the past 25 years. Clarkson was a hard nosed player & is now a hard nosed coach by getting rid of the dead wood in the playing list 2) Hard Nosed Coach In “A Call To Arms - Tigers need to get Lethal” Geoff the Wounded Tiger wrote about who Richmond needs a coach who can make the hard decisions (read Who Should Replace Wallace for more). Alistair Clarkson was a surprise pick by many to coach Hawthorn but what makes it now a genius move was his hard nosed decisions by getting rid of the dead wood in the playing list. 3) Develop a Winning Culture Easier said than done I know but there are several ways of developing a Winning Culture. Do not accept losses or near wins, Bring in past players off former glory days, Bring in Premiership players & Have a coach who knows what its like to win. 4) Player Behaviour The best thing that Geelong did to bring them where they are now is when the players put their foot down and suspended Steve Johnson. It brought a new direction where clubs had their own players bringing down the decisions on their own team mates. While West Coast is one of the only clubs that where successful with a bad behaviour record (read the clubs rap sheets). Most clubs who have player behaviour problems are not successful. Sydney where successful with their “Blood Culture” which basically made the players bleed for each other. 5) Financially Secure Using Geelong as an example again, they where a basket case in early 2000. Bad form, old players and in big financial trouble. They got a young coach and a successful Brian Cook who turned the club around with a huge 5 odd million debt into a club who now have a healthy bank account. If you look at Melbourne & Western Bulldogs they both have been struggling financially for the last 10-20 years and they have only had two Grand Final appearances between them in that period of time. Kangaroos is one club that was successful while struggling financial but once Carey was moved on, they have struggled financially. ... Easiyo Yogurt Base & Culture Sachets - Mango & Peach......of Easiyo Yogurt Base & Culture (fancy words for yogurt mix)....
Authority Sites Directory Blog Blog about Everything Nice Easiyo Yogurt Base & culture Sachets - Mango & Peach Flavours December 9, 2008 Damn, I really need to stop going out to shop for stuff. Just yesterday, I went to Seng Kang to meet a friend and later on I went to look around his area and found a Phoon Huat store sitting right smack in the middle of the shopping area. And of course, there was this compulsion I couldn’t resist and I bought myself 2 more sachets of Easiyo Yogurt Base & culture (fancy words for yogurt mix). Don’t you just hate it when you cannot stop spending money on health food? Anyway, the lady there was kind enough to give me a taste of her own homemade yogurt. It was rather delicious but then seriously, making yogurt with the Easiyo Base & Culture, you will nearly always get a perfect product in the end. I wanted to tell her to go and buy some milk and make it without the expensive Easiyo sachet but she is working at Phoon Huat, so I didn’t.  If you are afraid of making yogurt using milk and a gloop of yogurt, then you should consider using Easiyo and their Yogurt Starter. Nothing could be easier than mixing the sachet content with water and pouring boiling water into a flask, right? If I can do it, I am sure most people can as well. Anyway, I went in the store and came out with the two yogurt sachets - Mango & Peach flavours as you can see below. The Axis of Evil - Phoon Huat & Easiyo. The plastic bag with the Red Man logo is from Phoon Huat. I believe Phoon Huat and the Red Man could possibly be married or something. Anyhow, they are really making me go broke and penniless. Everytime I pass one of those Phoon Huat stores, I need to go in and buy some Easiyo Yogurt sachets. This has resulted in my poor health as I get extremely stressed about my financial situation and nowadays Phoon Huat stores are everywhere! If only I had missed seeing the Phoon Huat store, I guess I would have saved myself some dough. Note to self - stop whining! You will need to blame Phoon Huat for having such light coloured receipt printers, can barely make out the wordings on the receipt. The price of the two sachets of yogurt base is S$11.20. Yes, that means that one pack is S$5.60. Do note that this is one of the cheapest they have. Some of the Easiyo organic yogurt sachets can cost up to S$6.45. Hey, Phoon Huat, if you don’t reduce the prices of the Easiyo Yogurt sachets, you are going to see someone jumping onto the MRT tracks real soon! Hohoho, Mango flavour. My favourite. I was surprised to realize that some people don’t like Mango. They say that eating mango tastes a lot like taking medicine. However I always enjoy the sweet nectar of mango and hopefully, this Easiyo mango flavour yogurt will be just as great. I have never tasted nice mango flavoured yogurt before and this would be a good experience for me to broaden my horizons on the different offerings of yogurt out there. We need more exciting flavours in Singapore, the variety and the quality of yogurt here kind of sucks. The back of the Easiyo Mango flavoured sachet. Yes, still got that smiley man there telling us to eat more yogurt. The ingredients for the Mango flavoured yogurt base. It contains milk solids (milk powder), sugar, mango flavouring, live lactic cultures like l.bulgaricus, s.thermophilus, i.acidophilus and bifidobacteria, natural colours, beetroot red and beta carotene. Sounds very cool right? Peach flavour. This must be an all-time flavour for a lot of us. I certainly have enjoyed eating peach flavoured yogurt in the past. Who doesn’t? Yet another picture of the back of the Easiyo Peach flavoured yogurt sachet. Nothing much of a difference from the Mango flavoured one. However the weight of the sachets are different. This is about 240g while the Mango flavoured yogurt sachet is about 225g. What gives?? Perhaps the Peach yogurt requires more sugar than the mango? Same as the mango flavoured sachet with the exception of the peach flavouring in the ingredients list. Anyway, after making the kefir, I will continue to make more yogurt. Don’t worry, I will stick with the daily kefir diet but yogurt will still be included as well. The main reason is because I love the taste of yogurt and I enjoy making yogurt. I think kefir as more of a morning drink while yogurt something (like a snack) to eat after lunch or dinner. Hey, some of my friends consider yogurt as a delightful dessert. I completely agree with them. Bye and eat healthy, okay? Filed under Yogurt |

Southwest Airlines: Creating a different airline culture Just spotted the “It’s on” viral by Southwest Airlines, slightly reminiscent of “Wassap”, and found this gem in the related videos. I love how Southwest has created a reputation of airline culture of more human character and makes it comes alive through their staffers. Turns out, there is a whole slew of videos shot by passangers documenting funny and entertaining flight attendants.

Languages: Clarity or culture? | Three Old Farts
http://threeoldfarts.com/languages-clarity-or-culture/
...should be aiming for teaching culture to our children rather than...
Home Where it all began Chris Allison   Josh Lake   Nate Evans   About   By Chris Allison In Chris Allison 01/19/09 at 00:02 3 Comments Languages: Clarity or Culture? For my thoughts on education I rely heavily on the the good mojo that starts brewing when me, Josh, and Nate are all together. Saturday night the old farts convened, but rather than throw one of our famous keggers (kidding) we sat around and talked as we are often inclined to do. I credit the this post to Saturday night’s discussion- I hope you’ll be kind enough to discuss with us. There are many changes taking place in the world that have a significant impact on how we should educate. Perhaps one of the most stunning changes is the rapid unification of speech that is taking place across the globe thanks to, among other things, America and the internet. Behind the United States, India currently has the second most English speakers in the world . Meanwhile, rumor has it that China will become the largest English speaking country in the world by 2025 (though I’m having trouble finding a source to verify this.) With the largest people groups in the world adapting their tongues to the opportunities presented by the English language, some very important questions are raised. If the world is heading towards a global language, will it be English? As English speakers, is there a need for us to engage the other cultures of the world in their native tongues? America claims to be a melting pot, a home for diversity. While this may be the case, there are many people, including some immigrants, who value the clarity of a national language (English) over the cultural diversity of preserving native tongues. What is our response to these people? Shall we emphasize clarity, or shall we emphasize culture? I propose to answer a few of these questions, though not all. As English speakers we can show great charity by conversing with business partners and friends in their native language. Rather than assuming that the world should come to us and do the hard work, we should do some work ourselves and learn the languages of other lands. This point is supported by my next point. Why is this charity? Community is much stronger when it is location based. While the economy is becoming global, open, and unified we should not forget that friends and family who are physically present are the strongest community we can have. While the internet has opened tremendous opportunities for community, we must remember where we go when we disconnect from the computer. The physical and tangible world is where we develop the most essential and basic relationships that forge our cultural heritage. To destroy languages is to destroy a measure of individuality present in location based communities. In America we would not ask individuals to conform to individuals, so why should we ask that cultures conform to cultures? It may appear to be a step closer to unity, but in my opinion it is not. Unity is found in like purpose, not like identity. In fact, I propose our purposes are most likely to be accomplished by the diverse means people have available to them rather than by approaching life as if it was a keyhole to which we had only to find the fitting key. Thus, I believe we should be aiming for teaching culture to our children rather than clarity. We should be teaching them to embrace diversity and the learning of other languages, for the sake of more unique location based communities, and therefore stronger location based communities. Can we teach our children anything more important than the value of building and supporting communities? Is there anything more damaging than demanding that other cultures become like our culture? One of the overarching themes of this blog is that we must teach our children to be more than intelligent or knowledgeable, we must teach them to be mature human beings. Lithuania , funny notes Today I read a nice article on the Austrian News site OÖNachrichten about the capital of Lithuania and its preparations for the year 2009, where the city will celebrate it’s 1000th birthday. But in that year, Vilnius will also be the European Capital of Culture . What this has to do with basketball… In the article, the author quotes the Lithuanian actor Marius Jampolskis , who seems to be one of the upcoming stars in the Baltic country, by saying: I hope, that Lithuania will get known all over the world, and that the culture Capital gets more important than Basketball. The fact of considering basketball as a threat for such a huge event is somehow amazing. Living in the actual European Capital of Culture, Basketball is nowhere close to being a problem for the organizers. But as you know, in Lithuania basketball is way above anything else and this may explain this statement. However, the program for this event is not yet fixed completely, but I won’t be surprised if the biggest success during the year would be an exhibition of National Team Jersey’s or the opening of a new Arvydas Sabonis museum. ...Digitisation and the production of culture ...
LIAM J MOORE Blog Portfolio Contact ffffound! Digitisation and the production of culture 24 March 2009 We are in times of change and we can relate to a generation of Europeans living in 1440 when Johannes Gutenberg completed his Printing Press and revolutionised the world of then and today. With hindsight though we can only know how revolutionary this invention was, Gutenberg spread knowledge, information and power, inadvertently. We are living in similar times because of the internet. It’s something I never really appreciated or spent time thinking about, why should I? Well until I listened to some of the discussions in today’s seminar could I appreciate what the internet does to creativity, to meaning, to the masses, to the notion of uniqueness and to us individually. These are issues I feel are so important to us all, especially to me as a designer relying on the internet nearly every day. I read a few introductory chapters from “Being Digital” by Nicholas Negroponte. In the book (published in 1994) he discusses a fundamental shift from atoms to bits and describes a lot of what the internet is at the time and what the power of broadband will do to and for people. I found a lot of the book read what Negroponte predicts might happen in the future, while this is interesting, it does read a bit like Nostradamus’ predictions and it can become irritating after a while. But this does not take away from some really obvious and intelligent ideas Negroponte has. I photocopied a few of the later chapters as they had a focus on advertising and what might happen to it. One quote I really liked was, “Mass media got bigger and smaller at the same time.” This was a point made about how the likes of CNN and USA Today reached more and more audiences while at the same time videocassettes and cable TV services were examples of narrowcasting. I think more than ten years since the publication, this expansion and contraction could not be any more true. The rise of blogging and micro blogging and social networking and vlogging and sharing and uploading and downloading means we are one global massive media. As an entire unit we can spread an idea, we can share legal and illegal material, we can assist in getting the first black man into the white house. We are publishers in each individual right. An interesting point I read in We Think by Charles Leadbetter was that people who argue that this is just a sea of useless information have missed the point. For these believers who reckon that publishing of material should be reserved to those few who have access to printing presses, to hard keen journalists need to re-evaluate the state of modern media. Aren’t newspapers focusing hard on getting their paper online? And isn’t there already a sea of newspapers with lesser quality content (The Sun for example…)? What massive media can do is raise questions about objects and ideas. If an object is digitally released does this make it any less or more than an analogue equivalent? I have to admit, I sway more to the analogue side. While I can appreciate digital content for all its wonder, I do like to hold, touch and physically experience an artefact. I think the important question here to ask is, what is the purpose of releasing a product/object online or offline? It’s a bit like having a client that wants a website and doesn’t know why they need it, rather, they think that by having one it’s somehow better. To release digital content one needs to ask, what is my objective? One concern I have is with the notion of “limitless distribution.” Maybe I’m too cynical but nothing is forever. Nothing is limitless. If the idea of a file being online for all to download for all to access to have and share and send means that this object is limitless, it is untrue. There comes a point where over time, perhaps a certain file format will no longer be supported. People delete files purposefully and accidently. People get bored and change opinions and beliefs, and maybe treasuring that object means nothing after a given time. I’m maybe more about the present than, preserving the past in this particular scenario, but I’m just reflecting on today’s seminar.
