Coastal Georgia Greenway
January 2, 2008
A group has been in the works for some time now to create a 450 mile trail system that connects Florida to South Carolina through 6 coastal Georgia Counties. Guess what bryan County is - that’s right! A coastal county. The other counties are Chatham, Camden, Glynn, Liberty and McIntosh. The venture includes participation from both public and private organizations. Looking at the minutes from the June 2007 meeting, it seems as though the project is also including some interior works addressing routes to schools. If you live in a neighborhood where the kids must walk/ride to school, this is probably very important to you. There is a joint meeting for the Chatham and bryan County Committees being held Monday, January 28, from 1 to 3 PM at Bamboo Farms and Coastal Gardens. You can find more information on the Coastal Georgia Greenway website.

Drinks on Sunday
March 13, 2008
In case you missed it in yesterday’s edition of bryan County News, there has been a referendum submitted to the city. The measure would allow eateries in town to serve alcohol on Sundays - not the bars or the package stores - but places where you go to eat. The measure was proposed by the owner of Molly McPherson’s and supported by most of the related businesses. I would be interested to hear how you feel about it or if you have any questions related to the proposal.

Say Uncle!
Uncle.  A simple word.  Yet complex. So what exactly is an uncle?  Here are a few qualifying criteria of an uncle… Your mother’s brother Your father’s brother Your mother’s sister’s husband Your father’s sister’s husband Don’t make me break out all of the step, half, in-law, common-law combinations…we’d be here all night. The point is that while we as adults easily understand what an Uncle is, it seems that the whole Uncle concept is confusing for two year olds…or at leat my two year old. Ace has three uncles…Uncle Brandon, Uncle Mike (or sometimes referred to as Uncle Munch), and Uncle Charlie. We have some family friends, that while not officially an Uncle, are around enough to have earned the glorified Uncle status.  These people would be…Uncle Jason,  Uncle Soichi, Uncle Shawn, and Uncle bryan (with a Y not an I, like Bee-Ryan). With all of these Uncles, it’s hard to believe that Ace has no real aunts…  (So if any of you single ladies out there are looking for a single Uncle…I got the hook up.  C’mon now for Ace’s sake…the poor boy is in Aunt-icipation)  So, why was I surprised…   Why was I surprised when he pointed at me said, “Uncle Daddy!”?

Mariano Iglesias was quick to point to tracwebsite, but a Dr. Hannibal Lecter was snappy, and said “I don’t think posting links to Trac solves anything, it is a fact that bakery has many issues (some minor and some..not so minor). Some things should be seriously reconsidered and rewritten. But that’s just my 2c.”. As much as Chris Hartjes agreed with Dr. Hannibal Lecter, he pointed out the important fact that trac is still the one and only place for bugs on cakephp related projects. Dr. Hannibal Lecter hoped that someone from the core team was following the group, since it wouldn’t be very (And I quote) “userfriendly community” if they didnt. Dr. Tarique Sani (Whats up with all those doctors?) replied that it was unfair against the php team to mark the community less userfriendly because users finding bugs wouldn’t bother to create tickets on trac, and just posting the errors on the mailing list. And FWIW my personal experience is that posting in trac works Adam Royle said that the reason why he hadn’t posted a bug report on trac yet was because he didn’t like opening tickets without a patch or solid way to reproduce the error. Dr. Hannibal Lecter returned a apologized that it was not his intention to be unfair against the CakePHP team, and that he really appreciated their efforts. He was however puzzled that the creators of such a great framework as CakePHP would neglect The Bakeryand made a rather good point: If new users use the bakery, and its full of errors, what would they think of the underlying framework as well? Adam Royle returned to the discussion and tried to get answers on his two original questions He was unhappy wit the quality of this article on the bakery What version of cake is the bakery running on? Aperture Nature Workshop (Tetons) Day Two
September 29th, 2008 | 20 Comments | Categorised as: Life, Photography, Travel
The ANPW contest winners, Pros, and I were up bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning at 5am, hoping to catch a beautiful dawn in Grand Teton Ntl. Park. The actual workshop *learning Aperture* was to begin later, but at first light, the students split up into two groups to take some pictures. I trucked it to Oxbow Bend with Pros: Scott Stulberg & Steve Simon; and contest winners, Richard and Bryan. Everyone came prepared for the cold, except Steve, who was a bit whiny and runny nosed, kinda like a baby who's had their lollipop ripped outta their tiny little hands by a mean photographer trying to capture pure misery and tears. I guess Steve is like me, you know, "they mostly come out at night... mostly" aka morning is for sleeping, afternoons are for eating breakfast. Scott was determined to get a great shot, so we headed down this step muddy hill to the bank of Snake River. And then we set up our tripods, then everyone laughed at mind and pushed me in the mud... well they didn't exactly push me in the mud, but I bet they wanted too,. Jerks. *huff* Then we pointed our lenses at the iconic view and waited. And waited. No interesting light seemed to be happening on Mt. Moran, but suddenly a slight miss of fog started floating just above the water line behind us. No one else was worried about the immediate appearance of Death Eaters, but I methodically started chanting the Patronus Charm in my head and heart. As the fog began to roll, As the fog began to roll, Scott jumped and “yahooed”, changing his camera direction to started shooting the rolling fog and silhouetted trees against the wispy, pink sky. It was a great lesson in always looking for shots, even when you are waiting for a sunrise to happen, look around, there maybe a great shot just waiting to be found like, a silhouetted bird in the distance, or a line of photographers tripods all in a row, or even interesting shots of reflected trees in the water. Everyone was carefully switching lenses near the water, and Scotty reminded us to always keep one hand on your tripod near water. He has tragically lost two cameras in the water, so let him be the lesson for all of us. Scott Bourne lead Catherine and Rob to Schwabacher Landing, but immediately left when no clouds were present because without clouds, landscape shots fall a bit flat. So, they headed up the road past the landing at Teton Overlook and grabbed some amazing panoramic shots of the Southern Tetons. Rob disappeared from the group with Martin aka the "Aperture Guru" for a while and ran into a crazy one horned elk. After breakfast, the workshop got in full gear at the beautiful Jackson Arts center where Martin blew our minds with the dynamic power of Aperture. We imported our images, learned how to compare and select our favorites, and generally found out that Aperture can do most of the things we used to do in Photoshop, but it's waaaay less complicated. I'll do a dedicated post on Aperture in the next few days so you guys can see how cool it is. What photo management & editing application do you use?

« Cars (2006) operation groucho » Superman Returns (2006) June 29th, 2006 by Brian McDonough Rating: Director: bryan Singer Starring: Brandon Routh, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth, Parker Posey, James Marsden I was completely torn watching “Superman Returns.” It’s a terrific spectacle, visually one of the best superhero movies yet, but director and co-writer bryan Singer betrays the essence of the character so thoroughly that the film is, at best, a guilty pleasure, and at worst, heresy. Here’s what the film gets right: The action is big and fast, expertly staged. I’ve never been more convinced by special effects that this is exactly what a superhuman being would be like. And Singer pits Superman against pretty much every form of major disaster: Plane crash, shipwreck, runaway car, earthquake, fiery explosions, each made compelling, each looking so big against the lone figure in the red cape. The visual design is top-notch. It’s a visually darker world that Superman is returning to, and it feels more modern without “edgy” nihilism. The Daily Planet has that retro art deco feel that’s just … right. The other major set pieces are diverse and fascinating. The film cost $260 million, but you’re seeing ever dollar on the screen. The cast is strong. Brandon Routh makes a good Superman and an excellent (if underused) Clark Kent. Kevin Spacey retains some of Gene Hackman’s silliness as Lex Luthor, but adds significant menace. Kate Bosworth is too young to play Lois Lane, especially as a single mother, and the character is underwritten, but she makes the best of it. Cameos by Eva Marie Saint as Martha Kent and Frank Langella as Perry White are welcome, but not as welcome as seeing Noel Neill and Jack Larson — Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen from the ’50s Superman TV show — given worthwhile cameos. What the film gets wrong isn’t slight. We’re given a Superman who abandoned Earth to go search for the ruins of Krypton. (Which, by the way, should be all kryptonite, so, um, bad move, Clark.) A Superman who didn’t say goodbye to anyone, even Lois, because that would’ve been too hard. A Superman who comes back to learn that Lois Lane — the woman he loved only from afar — is engaged to the man with whom she’s had a child, and proceeds to stalk her with X-Ray vision and tempt her with this lingering, longing flirtation that’s passive-aggressively hidden underneath a dishonest veneer of cool professionalism. A weak, selfish Superman who is trying to break up a small child’s family. It’s as though Singer and company have no concept of nobility. The weaknesses must have been apparent to Singer, because the film doesn’t make much effort to justify these deviations, preferring to just get on with the story at hand. And these problems are never resolved. The resolution is not only unsatisfying between Lois and Superman, but Richard (who by film’s end has proven himself as brave and much more honorable than the guy in the cape) is entirely absent. Instead, Singer brings his best efforts to the action with edge-of-the-seat sequences. In these bits, he keeps Superman bright (except for that slightly off uniform) in a world that’s darker than Christopher Reeve’s, but that’s marred with a couple instances of intense violence that really are so off-tone they’re hard to watch. The heart of the problem is the Big Reveal that comes as Lois is being savagely beaten by a crook clearly intent on murdering her in front of her paralyzed, asthmatic four-year-old kid. Can you think of a scene less appropriate for a young kid to see? Yes, the film is rated PG-13, but Superman is an all-ages character. You just don’t get to make a Superman movie without considering the pre-teen audience. That’s like making a Nora Ephron movie without considering stupid people. But I digress. The big reveal is the kid hurling a piano at the bad guy with sufficient might to crush the man to death — Perry White’s pleasantly reliable nephew is definitely not this kid’s father. Singer has picked up the creepiest aspect of “Superman II,” which this film is supposed to follow. Superman so loves Lois that, once she sees through his Clark persona, he decides to marry her but, stupid plot device, must give up his powers to do so. He does, and he and Lois do it in the arctic Fortress of Solitude. Circumstances force him to regain his powers and resume his double life, so he magically (really, he kisses her and she forgets) erases her memory of his identity, their recent adventures, and the sex. It escaped me as a ten-year-old theatergoer how unnervingly creepy that is, until Singer gives us the implication that this is how Lois got knocked up with a gonna-be-super-someday kid. Which means Superman abandoned Earth weeks, perhaps only days, after having saved the planet from being conquered by three crazed Kryptonian super-villains. Yeah, clearly we don’t need him around. And Lois must’ve fallen into Richard White’s arms awfully fast to have believed he could have fathered the child Superman left her with (what, did they not have condoms in 1980? Stupid “free love” generation …). So much for a mourning period, eh, Lois? Since Singer’s Superman is too cowardly to say goodbye, her true love might’ve been dead while she was falling into the arms of James Marsden’s mild-mannered journalist. And how’s Superman leave us at the end? He doesn’t tell Lois the truth. He just tells her he’ll be around and floats off. Classy. Who would’ve thought Superman would become a hero for absentee fathers everywhere? Superman is a hero. He’s often criticized for not being complex enough, for being too purely good to relate to. That’s how he’s supposed to be. Superman is not our drinking buddy, he’s our ideal. He’s super. He does the right thing. Period. Singer’s idea to give Superman some emotional challenges, to throw a wrench into his relationship with Lois, was a good one. Even the absence probably could’ve been made to work. But Home-Wreckin’-Child-Neglectin’-Woman-Manipulatin’ Superman is not the action figure I wanted to buy. And goddamn it, I really wanted to like this film. It looks so good. Somewhere in my notebook I scribbled, “All movies should feel this big.” Singer’s camerawork is as masterful as his grasp of character is weak. I wanted to be charmed by Routh and amazed by Singer. And I was, but not enough to make me swallow a Superman who hasn’t done one thing right that didn’t involve fighting the clearly labeled bad guy. Still, I can’t flatly say to stay away. It’s worth watching, and the saving grace is the knowledge that Superman isn’t one story, he’s a myth that will shrug off the shameful aspects of this episode like a mere hail of bullets. FIVE DEGREES OF SEPARATION Superman: The Movie—It’s corny and a bit slow by today’s standards, but it’s also gentle, sweet and inspiring. And the DVD commentary by Richard Donner and writer Tom Mankiewicz is fantastic; you feel like you’re overhearing old friends talk at the coolest cocktail party ever. Spider-Man 2—Arguably the best comic-book movie ever. Tops the excitement of the first installment but remains true to the character. Action, darker edge, and still inspirational. Batman Begins—This is the kind of return we wanted: Resurrecting a moribund franchise by going back to the basics, not by hijacking the hero into the wrong soap opera. The Usual Suspects—Singer is more at home with the morally compromised characters in this complex, fascinating film than he is with Superman. Hero—Zhang Yimou’s dense, dreamy tale of honor, bravery and kung fu gives us shades of morality without crippling the story. As the final credits roll, you feel wonder … not disappointment. digg_url = 'http://www.badmouth.net/superman-returns-2006-2/'; This entry was posted on Thursday, June 29th, 2006 at 1:00 am and is filed under Reviews. « The DaVinci Code (2006) Cars (2006) » X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) June 8th, 2006 by Brian McDonough Rating: Director: Brett Ratner Starring: Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellan, Famke Janssen X-Men 3 packs a ton of action and angst into just over 100 minutes. If the film has a drawback, it’s that its frenetic attempt to hit every emotional and action high overwhelms the story – and the viewer. Yet many of those emotional moments flop, and a lot of action potential is underutilized. It’s no spoiler to reveal that Jean Grey, heroically killed at the end of the second flick, comes back, with dangerously increased powers. It’s also been a key note of the ad campaign that Magneto is back, fighting against some kind of alleged “cure” for mutant-ness. Topping those two major storylines is mutant angst – unrequited loves, jealousy, all that oh-so-human frailty that the X-Men comics have always dripped. Brett Ratner steps into the chair bryan Singer abandoned and seems determined to top the guy who had such success with the first two X-flicks. In particular, his action scenes are as fully orchestrated as military maneuvers, with Wolverine and a new addition, the Beast (Kelsey Grammer), really cutting loose in some exciting sequences. However, the moments that are supposed to have emotional heft are often fairly clunky, most particularly the intended tension between Wolverine and Jean Grey when her Phoenix incarnation comes back a bit … randy. Ratner isn’t as bad at romance and sexual tension as, say, George Lucas, but he ain’t much better, either. As Magneto gathers an army of mutants committed to resisting this “cure” for their genetic gifts, the film managed to provide something the comics gave me when I was a kid, but the first two movies lacked. Much has been made of how the X-Men, as mutant outcasts, serve as a metaphor for anyone who feels disenfranchised. Racial minorities, the gay community, and most importantly, teenagers – young people whose bodies are going crazy on them, who feel misunderstood and alienated, and resent or revolt against the system. Watching the mutants take sides in this movie, I felt that old desire to be an X-Man again, to want to be part of that world. While Singer’s movies held my interest and were quite successful, they never gave me that particular old buzz. For fans of the X-Men comics, there are a lot of classic references to enjoy. For the less initiated, the film is liable to rush past at points, but not at the cost of overall enjoyment. The film does a particularly good job early on, laying out the conflicts and explaining characters and situations at a brisk but digestible clip. (Warning: If you follow the jump, there won’t be major specific plot spoilers, but there will be thematic commentary that might piss you off if you don’t want any hints about the flick. Which, if you’re that intense about it, you should’ve seen by now…) The biggest drag of the movie is how it handles the Phoenix story. Jean Grey comes back from the dead with the full, frightening potential of her psychic powers unleashed. She’s mentally unstable because … well, the explanation the movie gives is kinda convenient and lame, really. But she is. Unstable. Anyway, the two things they do wrong is that whenever Jean is in character as the Phoenix, she gets this ugly vampire-zombie look. While characters argue whether Jean is now evil, the viewer looks at the screen and goes, yeah, clearly evil. Why make it so easy on the audience? Another problem is similar to what occurred in the comics. Before Phoenix went bad, she was so powerful a good guy it was difficult to write a threat that she couldn’t solve in the blink of an eye. Here, she’s so powerful a sorta-villain that most of the time, the film has her standing around doing nothing, because if she were to take center stage as the main threat, she’d wipe out the X-Men and everyone else in a heartbeat, and that’s tough to sell as a Hollywood ending (which is not to say that her, and the film’s, body count isn’t damned impressive). Also, the extreme measures the X-Men have to take to contain her out-of-control powers seem absurd when a less drastic solution is not only right at hand, but is used against another villainous mutant only minutes before the final confrontation with Phoenix. The film adds another original X-Man, the winged Angel, but barely makes use of him, and seems even to forget him by the end of the movie. Similarly, what seems like a really interesting possibility with shape-changing terrorist Mystique gets no play, either. Magneto’s plot, the opposition to the “cure” for mutanthood, is interesting, but the consequences and implications of the situation could’ve been explored just a bit more, too. The film bites off more than it can comfortably chew. The result is a movie that moves really fast but doesn’t get quite as much emotional or intellectual traction as it could. And with so much going on, there’s a lot of loose ends. It seems the “Angel” character was added only for one majestic shot of him spreading his wings. He’s underutilized throughout the film, and in the final battle, he rescues one minor character, flies off, and is never seen again. The film makes some major changes to the status quo, leaving the team and their world in a condition much, much more changed than at the end of either of the previous movies. While this is supposed to be the “Last Stand,” there are a couple teasers at the end that seem to deliver a promise of stories to come (watch all the way through the credits for the last of those promises). Considering how much Ratner delivered as a latecomer to the project — despite his unsatisfying emotional moments — it wouldn’t be so bad to see those promises kept. THREE DEGREES of SEPARATION Spider-Man 2 – Full-steam action, emotional notes nailed one after another. Notice how having one charismatic villain works better? Battlestar Galactica – Technically not a movie, but the mini-series and a season and a half of the new show is out there, combining life-and-death tension, character drama and hot robot babes perfectly. After the Sunset — Ratner’s caper film with “retired” jewel thieves Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek against rogue fed Woody Harrelson has some really, really clunky moments, but is ultimately a fine piece of Caribbean confection. digg_url = 'http://www.badmouth.net/x-men-the-last-stand/'; This entry was posted on Thursday, June 8th, 2006 at 10:44 am and is filed under Reviews. An official university licensed project, the film was made by local independent filmmakers and Virginia Tech alumni Chris Valluzzo and Sean Kotz, who began planning the production in 2005 as a way of honoring the school’s vibrant and energetic fans. The long anticipated premiere will be held on the evening before the Hokies open their 2007-2008 season against East Carolina in a nationally televised game on ESPN, which will broadcast its “College GameDay” show from Blacksburg . Trailer “What we found is a fan base with an exceptional and unique culture,” says Kotz, the co-director/producer. “The Hokie Nation has created itself by blending traditional Appalachian values of family, hospitality, community and devotion with a blue collar work ethic, an eye toward the future and what we call the ‘Hokie Spirit.’ This film was born out of a genuine love of the team, the town and, especially, the Hokie fans.”That same approach to life helped Virginia Tech students rise above the tragedy that struck the campus in April of this year. “Hokie Spirit is an inherent belief that anything can be accomplished, any obstacle can be overcome with unity, faith and willpower,” says Kotz.”Hokie Nation” features interviews with fans and some of the sports legends who have called Virginia Tech’s Lane Stadium home, including NFL greats Bruce Smith, Antonio Freeman and Shayne Graham. Coach Frank Beamer, a longtime fan favorite, helps illuminate the Hokie phenomenon, as do students, faculty, media personalities, law enforcement officials and two Virginia governors. The entire game day experience is documented through world-renowned tailgates in the stadium’s parking lots, deep coverage from the stands and birds-eye views from the luxury boxes. “So many moments have been special in this project,” says co-director/producer Valluzzo . “Interviewing Frank Beamer, Bud Foster, and bryan Stinespring, who all gladly spoke with us for this documentary. Meeting and interviewing Bruce Smith, arguably the greatest player to ever call himself a Hokie. Talking with Carroll Dale, a Tech great who played in the first Super Bowl for the Green Bay Packers under Vince Lombardi. And talking with former Governor Mark Warner and current Governor Tim Kaine made me think that everyone is a Hokie fan. “But probably the greatest moment for me,” he continues, “was walking through the parking lot and the stadium and hearing people shout out ‘Hey, Hokie movie guy’ and giving me the thumbs up. They were happy their story was being told and I am extremely proud to represent these wonderful people.”After its August 31 premiere, “Hokie Nation” will have encore showings at the Lyric at 9:30 that night and at Sunday and Monday matinees. The following week it will be shown at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse on September 6-7, Norfolk’s Naro Theater on September 6, and Richmond’s Byrd Theater on September 7. Check those theaters for showtimes. A DVD of the two-hour documentary will be available for general release around mid-September.SOURCE: Horse Archer Productions By PR Newswire If you enjoyed this post, make sure you subscribe to our RSS feed! What irritated me (and continues to do so) is the portrayal of A.D.D. as if it were a gift from Zeus. I wrote a vicious screed that I posted on this blog and, within a short time, removed it. 1 I did not remove it because of a threat of a libel lawsuit (yes, someone did suggest that) but because of a heartfelt personal message I received directly from Bryan. While the details of that exchange will remain private, there is a promise I made and that will now be fulfilled. I apologize to you, Bryan, for any harm that may have been caused by that post. While I may not agree with your method of delivery, nonetheless, you have shown that your heart is in the right place and for that you deserve to be commended. =============================== I did receive an email from one blog reader asking why I removed it. He felt I was on target. So, to some degree, this post is an answer to your question. ↩ SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "A Blog Post Gone Bad", url: "http://jeffsaddmind.com/a-blog-post-gone-bad-372.htm" }); Jeff posted this article under Adult A.D.D. on Sunday, January 11th, 2009 at 11:22 am You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0 feed.

Where did I miss the second half of this debacle? From a PR standpoint, this certainly takes a revisit. Apologies if you’re tired of the subject. For those of you who don’t know (and I imagine a fair many of you don’t, so that’s okay), I’ll try to sum it up for you. This is an incredibly simplified version. See the links below for more detailed information. Kryponite Lock is a company that makes, you guessed it, bike locks. In 2004 several videos circulated across the Internet demonstrating how to defeat a certain type of lock style with a typical ballpoint pen. The news originally broke on an “online forum,” and this is important later on. This spells bad news for Kryptonite, right? Well, the blogosphere went crazy and there was quite an uproar even in some traditional mediums. Things got blown out of proportion – as I hope to detail in later posts – because of the mob mentality of parts of the blogosphere. I say “parts of the blogosphere” not all. But I’m digressing. So to make a long story longer, this went on for some time and finally Kryptonite offered a lock exchange program to replace ( here’s a interesting note) not only the pickable locks, but many other locks as well at a significant cost to the company. Sounds great. Word is that Kryptonite suffered irrepairable losses because of this crisis, which could have been avoided if only they had been monitoring the blogosphere . Is this true? Could it have been avoided? Were they not being constantly vigilant? Well guess what, maybe they were. Kryptonite has become the poster child for “Blogosphere Monitoring, how NOT to do it,” and why not? Well, because Donna Tocci, Public Relations Manager for Kryponite, argues that they were watching, they knew about it from day one. I did some online snooping and came across several blog interviews with Tocci that range from April 2005, to December 2005 (see the links below for more information) . Here are my new thoughts about the issue: Too slow to see? No. Tocci indicates they knew about it from day one. The interviews go into chronological detail (especially the Naked Conversations blog post). Good eye, but it’s what you do with that information that matters. Too slow to talk? I say yes. Donna admits that maybe they could have communicated better. It’s a relatively small company and they had various angles to contend with during this and it affected their communications. Could be trouble. Too slow to act? I don’t think so. Donna makes some great cases for not implementing a plan until they had every aspect covered. Sounds good and I agree. You can’t institute a lock replacement program until you can figure out distribution, storage, costs, etc. This takes time. Too slow to get the real story out? I might have to agree. The initial story broke in September, 2004. The first mention I see of Tocci out in the blogosphere trying to get the real story out is April 2005, then July 2005, then December 2005, and into 2006. In my email conversation with Donna she wrote, “This was just the time frame that we were able to start some conversations.” Again, back to the fact that they had scads to do during the crisis. Is that a good reason to drop the communication ball? No one would agree if asked, but it’s the pressure of the situation that really determines what kind of communicator you are. Let’s all remember this: no matter what happens, you must still communicate. Either way, Tocci did go out and get the truth out. Maybe late, but she was tenacious about telling Kryptonite’s story. All last year she was doing interviews, on blogs, posting comments, replying to emails, being available. That’s good communication. She even answered my email to rehash what they consider a closed topic. And who am I? Just a student, trying to learn the truth, trying to share a case study that everyone already assumed had gone wrong. But I maintain this: It wasn’t as wrong as people said it was, not by a long shot. I posit that the blogosphere is like TV or Radio News at times. If it isn’t sensational, it’s not going to make the cut. Bad news is always news, but good news is fluff. (At least that’s how some journalists make communicators feel at times – oops, my PR is showing). My point? When it hit the fan for Kryptonite everyone and their grandmother was writing about it, but when the real story comes out, people don’t care. I indicated this to Tocci who wrote, “This is a very big generalization. The news of our lock exchange program did get out lots and lots of people through the internet and traditional media sources. But, yes, as in most mediums controversy ’sells’.” And that’s why I actually had to search to find the second half of this story. You couldn’t read a PR blog, listen to a PR podcast, or read books about the blogosphere without hearing about this mess when it first came out. But after that I had to search for it. And – oh boy – it’s out there. There is also a thread of information in the following posts that Kryptonite knew about the faulty locks since 1992 when a British publication wrote about it. I’ve read enough articles to gather that Kryptonite Locks weren’t specifically mentioned, so people are putting too much emphasis on that article. However, brand name listed or not, why didn’t they check it out? Do we have a problem here? In crisis PR we call that a prodrome, noticing circumstances that have the potential to become crises. None of the Tocci interviews go into detail about that, she states the article never mentioned Kryptonite Locks. But the myth remains, blogs nearly destroyed Kryptonite, blogs discovered the ineptitude of a shoddy company, you have to monitor the blogosphere, Kryptonite did a lousy job, etc etc. You can think whatever you like, I don’t care. What I care about is researching the truth. How many other people did that? From a PR standpoint, It’s true that you need to monitor the Internet, it’s true you need to know what your publics are saying about you. But it’s also true that you need to communicate as often as possible, especially during a crisis. Maybe Kryptonite knew from day one, maybe they could have done more, been better communicators. Even in the aftermath, why does it take so long to get the real story out, over so many channels, over so long a period of time? PR is about communicating effectively, right? Check out the links below to read interviews with Tocci, opinions and all. If you read on, make sure you read all the comments as Tocci usually follows up to people’s questions. PR flack or honest communicator? I’ve formed my opinion, but let me know your thoughts.
