Proof that Nofollow = Quality Comments:Visit the Best Science Blogs.
Do you remember Shoemoney’s Pamcake’s eyerolls at the idea that “Nofollow” blogs have good comments? Well, if you need any proof, visit the two blogs currently neck and neck in the “2007: Best Weblogs” contest. At both Climate Audit and Bad Astronomy, you’ll find plenty of heated debate. The things you won’t find are: Automated Spam Comments Over SEO’d comment “names” and Pink link condoms on the author url links. In fact, while you will see link condoms in the comment content at Climate Audit, it appears that “Bad Astronomy” is full boar nofollow, giving real “follows” to links in author names, in comment content and trackbacks. What are the two blogs discussing currently? To some extent both blogs are discussing the 2007 Weblog awards which became rather contentious. (In comments on some blogs, some are acting as if the outcome of this blog award will determine national policy on Global Climate Change.) The winner of the competition was scheduled to be announced last night– but the decision was deferred due to voting irregularities which included voting that continued for as much as four hours after poll had closed. The organizers are evidently combing through the data in an attempt to figure out which of the tens of thousands of votes cast were cast by zombie ‘bots. The winner will be decreed on Monday! (Update, Friday 3:26 pm CST: WeblogsAwards has just officially decreed the “race” a tie.) Zombie ‘bots voted?! For those of you wondering whether ‘zombie bot voting was possible, evidently, it was easy! No-Oblimimal has described how to hack Weblog Awards (2007.weblogawards.org/) flimsy ballot security, and what Webblog Awards’s programmers could have done to prevent the ballot stuffing by ‘zombie bots. (It seems the voting system was less secure than my blog comments!) Hmm… Political Controversy +Internet voting = Zombie bot ballot stuffing. I think I’m now against internet voting in real elections. (Not that I was ever for it.) Oh, and despite Pamcakes eyerolls, I am keeping the “follow” on my comments. Tags:contests Weblogs

15 Apr 18 Financial Literacy Websites that aren’t Blogs Momma When you’re selling a house, the realtor will tell you to move all of your personal stuff, (knick-knacks, photos, and general clutter) into a storage unit so that perspective buyers can see THEIR stuff in your house. It makes sense. After all, it’s harder to envision how your things fit when the house is so full of the seller’s stuff. Lately, I’ve been finding the same perspective while reading personal finance blogs. I’m seeing too much clutter in their stories to apply their lessons to my own life. So, today I decided not to read the 20th article about how to use a credit card effectively (or how EVYL they are), I decided to go wandering for some less personalized perspectives. Maybe you’d like to get a de-cluttered set of financial resources too… you know… so you can see how it applies to your life, instead of trying to make room in the existing story for your own details. Great general purpose personal finance education websites: • MyMoney.gov – U.S. Financial Literacy & Education Commission • Resource List - Institute for Financial Literacy • Choose To Save – Employee Benefit Research Institute • Georgia Consortium for Personal Financial Literacy – Georgia Council on Economic Education • Money Smart Financial Education Program – FDIC • Office of Financial Education – U.S. Treasury • Personal Finance Education – Federal Reserve Consumer Help • National Endowment for Financial Education Three websites provided by The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants: • Life Crisis Center  • 360 Degrees of Financial Literacy • Feedthepig.org Childhood Financial Literacy: • Jump$tart Financial Smarts for Students – Jumpstart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy • Student/Parent Resources Financial Literacy – Utah State Office of Education • Youth Education ~ Fun & Games Site – U.S. Department of Treasury • Where does your money go? – PBS • Money Talks – University of California Cooperative Extension • Young Money Magazine • Federal Reserve Kids Page – Federal Reserve Do you enjoy what you’re reading here? I’m on Top 100 Malaysian blogs List!
Posted by Kenneth "Definite" Lee on Jun 04, 2009
Files under Internet & Web, Alexa Ranking
You are reading MrDefinite.com 2.0 (make money online) entry.
Got a super vain new theme!
Kathy told me the previous layout sucked. I wanted to tell her hers sucked even more, until she asked me to zh’ng her blog header.
As for her header, she took the photograph all by herself. What a skill!
It felt as if I had worked on the current layout like forever, even when I was busy with the procedures of and preparations for my forthcoming new job and Master’s programme.
More excitement in detail soon!
Adi Wong from Rice Blogger came up with the “Top 100 Malaysian blogs List” — a system of blog ranking based solely on a site’s Alexa and Technorati performances combined. MrDefinite.com opened at 76th on the chart on May 26 this year.
Right now, this blog has slipped down to the 85th position.
Not something exactly positive, but not negative either. Adi stated that the ranking is not updated daily, therefore both my Alexa and Technotati rankings as shown in the chart are no reflection of the current exact rankings.
In terms of Alexa ranking, MrDefinite.com is now…
170,731
and increasing!
More updates in the queue, so stay tuned.

A large list of Horse blogs Saturday, February 3rd, 2007 at 4:41 pm   I have just discovered a gold mine of Horse Blogs If you read my post “Five good reasons why you should start a blog” I gave you a few reasons for starting a blog for your horse business. You may have thought, “Hey that sounds like a good idea, but where to start, what to write about, and how do I pick out my blog categories”? Well I think that the first step should be to check out and read some postings at a few horse blogs that relate to whatever you are passionate about with horses. I did a some quick Internet surfing and found this wonderfully large and varied Horse blogs List at the Bridlepath blog. Doris gave me permission to repost her huge list here. Judging from the comments on the article, many business owners responded that they’ll eschew the “libelous” site altogether, citing a slew of “stupid” and “false” reviews that “should have been removed.” (Though their passionate responses here seem to contradict the promised refrain.) Which just goes to show why businesses SHOULDN’T have a voice on this site. It’ll turn Yelp into a messy war zone, with most small businesses objecting to any criticism, petty or legitimate (and who is the best judge of that? Certainly not the businesses). Indeed, many people think Yelp is too easy on outfits. FeedMeDrinkMe’s Renee Wilmeth posted an article a while back citing the amateur, easy-to-please palates of the majority of reviewers on Yelp. Indeed, the spirit of the site seems to reward favored small businesses more than to harpoon errant ones (though that does happen). How about this: Instead of diluting a consumer-driven Web site, Yelp or some other enterprising outfit should erect a site where small business owners have the choice to skewer bad reviews. They can pull them from Yelp, dailies, magazines, weeklies, TV shows, etc. Everything wrong with a review–misspellings, factual errors, obvious lapses in judgement, and presumptuous statements–could be flogged for all the world to see. Don’t crash a party, small businesses. Start your own: Badreviews.com?

What’s been really surprising? The demographic accounting for this massive growth: Baby Boomers are now dominating the social media scene, at least with respect to adoption rate. Facebook, once perceived as a college kid activity when it was restricted to college e-mail addresses, now has women over the age of 55 to thank for its most recent growth, according to Inside Facebook. In the past four months alone, this demographic has grown a staggering 175.3 percent. Additionally, the number of Facebook users over the age of 35 has nearly doubled in the past 60 days. Similarly and to an even greater degree, Twitter has been the beneficiary from the surge in traffic from the middle-age demographic. Recent research from comScore discovered that 45 to 54 year olds are 36 percent more likely than the average Twitterer’s age to visit the site, which makes them the largest indexing age group. Overall, the average age of all 10 million twitterers is over the age of 35. What does this mean for businesses? Social media, no longer a playground for the young, has reached a critical mass for use as an effective marketing tool. Coupled with the decline of print media, social media is now on the precipice of assuming its throne as king of reaching the masses. The onus is on businesses to come up with clever ways to effectively utilize these social media tools to bring customers back and reach new potential customers. And that’s where we come in. Let us create or refine your social media strategy and maximize these tools for you.

Secure Your Wordpress blogs With Some Free and Easy Tips

Last night I was reading on the warrior forum about a guy that had several of his Wordpress sites hacked. I panicked a little when I read that and on impulse I ordered yet another eBook which I probably didn’t need to. Just about all the information in it could have been easily found online so I feel like it was a waste of $22.00. Another thing is that there are so many steps to secure each site that it makes it too time consuming when it comes to updating to the latest wordpress version since you have to repeat all fo the same steps again. So today I decided to check out some tutorials online that had the same information…only free. I did these today and installed on this blog as well as my other wordpress blogs. Wordpress Plug-ins To help secure and protect your blog: WP-Spam Free Plug In - Protects your blog from comment spam without bothering your readers with CAPTCHA. Also has an easy contact form that you can set up and protect your email form unnecessary spam. WP Security Scan - Scans your WordPress installation for security vulnerabilities and suggests corrective actions. Login Lockdown - Records the IP address and timestamp of every failed login attempt. If more than a certain number of attempts are detected within a short period of time from the same IP range, then the login function is disabled for all requests from that range. This helps to prevent brute force password discovery. Admin SSL - Admin SSL secures login page, admin area, posts, pages - whatever you want - using Private or Shared SSL. Other Security Tips: Prevent your directories from being indexed in the search engines. Add this line to your robots.txt file: Disallow: /wp-* Hide your plugins folder. Check to see if it is hidden ex: http://mysite.com/wp-content/plugins If you can see a list of all your plug ins, they are not hidden! Open your .htaccess file and edit it with notepad. add this to the file some where after the # BEGIN WordPress line : # Prevents directory listing IndexIgnore * Hide your wp-config.php file. Since this file holds your database information you will want to hide this from public view. open up your .htaccess file again and add this: <Files wp-config.php> order allow, deny deny from all </Files> I found this great post with 18 security plugins and tips. but some of them don’t work because of my server and one just doesn’t work right (Stealth Login locked me out of my site and had to delete the folder in the plugins folder then had to delete my .htaccess file in order to reach my log in page again.)

Product Description How to setup, configure and customise this powerful PHP/MySQL based Open Source CMS Install, configure, administer, maintain and extend Drupal. Control access with users, roles and permissions Structure your content using Drupal’s powerful CMS features Includes coverage of release 4.7 In Detail Drupal is one of the most popular content management systems on the internet. Based on PHP/MySQL, its power and flexibility combined with its exceptional design mean it is already on the way to becoming the de facto standard for CMS Websites. Drupal’s modular design and structured source code make it both highly flexible and easily extended and modified. Drupal is extremely scalable, making it ideal for both a simple personal website as well as an industrial strength commercial or institutional web presence. Drupal is a model open source project in that it has a large, friendly community of people who contribute to the project in various ways. Drupal is not only free and easy to use, but this community provides on going mutual support. Drupal’s power means choosing an initial pathway can be daunting. The flexibility and power of its content management features mean the right approach needs to be taken. This book takes you from initial set up through site design and creation in a series of carefully structured steps. While there are a few advanced topics that are beyond the scope of the book, all of the core stages of creating a website using Drupal are covered in detail. What you will learn from this book? Chapter 1 introduces you to the world of Drupal and looks at where Drupal comes from, where its going and what it can offer you. Because it is important to understand the nature of the tasks which lie ahead, it also discusses how to plan and build your website, taking a sneak preview of the book’s demo Website in the process. Finally, we scrutinize the Drupal community and learn how to make the most of Drupal as an organized, living entity and not just a piece of software. Chapter 2 deals with how to get everything you need up and running on a development machine and also briefly looks at how all the requisite technologies gel together to produce your working Drupal site. Once everything is up and running, and after looking over some of the more common installation problems, the chapter presents a short tour of Drupal in order to give you an idea of what to expect. Chapter 3 looks at the most general settings which all Drupal administrators need to contend with. Everything from determining your site’s name to dealing with the cache or file system settings gets treated here before we look at more focused and complex issues in the chapters to come. Chapter 4 sees us adding functionality to the newly created site. The focus of this chapter is really on modules and how they can be added and enabled, or even how to obtain modules that are not part of the standard distribution. Since blocks are often required to display the functionality provided by modules, this chapter ends off with a discussion on how to control blocks. Chapter 5 concerns itself with the topic of access control. Drupal has a sophisticated role based access control system, which is fundamentally important for controlling how users access your site. This chapter will give you the information you need to implement whatever access controls you require. Chapter 6 gets to the heart of the matter by beginning the book’s coverage on content. Working with content, what content types are available, administering content and even a discourse on some of the more common content related modules serve as a basis for moving to more advanced content related matters that follow in the next chapter. Chapter 7 gives you the edge when it comes to creating engaging and dynamic content. While this chapter doesn’t require you to be an expert in HTML, PHP and CSS it does introduce you to the basics and shows how, with a little knowledge, extremely powerful and professional content can be created. That’s only half the story, because later on it looks at categorization and how this particular feature of Drupal sets it apart from everything else out there. Chapter 8 gives you a run down of how attractive interfaces are created in Drupal through the use of themes. As well as discussing briefly some of the considerations that must be taken into account when planning your website, it ends off by looking at how to make important modifications to your chosen theme. Chapter 9 really adds the icing on the cake by looking at a host of more advanced topics. From creating flexible content types and generating revenue from ads, all the way through to building dynamic content using Ajax, you will find something to enhance your website and add that something special. Chapter 10 takes a pragmatic look at the type of tasks you will need to be proficient in in order to successfully run and maintain a Drupal site. Whether its setting up cron jobs or making backups of your database, everything you need to do throughout the course of running your newly created website will be covered here. Appendix A deals with the all important topic of deployment. Because all major work should be done on a copy of your Website on a development machine, this appendix presents a sound process for taking the finished product and making it available for public consumption on your host site. Who this book is written for? This book will suit anyone who has a need to create a content rich website. Whether you are: Adding a personal web page Building a forum Writing a collaborative book Retailing goods Creating a blog Launching a community Website This book will prove to be an indispensable companion. Both experts and beginners to computing alike will find the information contained herein to be accessible and easy to intuit. About the Author David Mercer David Mercer was born in August 1976 in Harare, Zimbabwe. Having always had a strong interest in science, David came into regular contact with computers at university where he graduated cum laude with majors in applied math and math (although he minored in computer science). As a programmer and professional writer who has been writing both code and books for about nine years, he has worked on a number of well known titles, in various capacities, on a wide variety of topics. His books have sold tens of thousands of copies and have been translated into over 6 different languages to date. David finds that the challenges arising from the dichotomous relationship between the science (and art) of software programming and the art (and science) of writing is what keeps his interest in producing books piqued. He will no doubt continue to write professionally in the future. David balances his time between programming, reviewing, writing, and contributing to interesting web-based projects such as RankTracer and LinkDoozer. When he isn’t working (which isn’t that often) he enjoys playing guitar (generally on stage and unrehearsed) and getting involved in outdoor activities ranging from touch rugby and golf to water skiing and snowboarding. Visit RankTracer or find him on LinkDoozer where he is generally lurking.
Posted on July 22nd, 2008 by Therese
