Everybody has widgets somewhere on their blog. Some are neat, entertaining, even useful. So what are the dumbest blog widgets ever? I think I found them! Dumb blog Widget #1: Wax On Wax Hoff Go ahead - try your luck at waxing off chest hair, complete with sound effects and comments. If this doesn’t keep your blog visitors around, what will? You can see it here. Dumb blog Widget #2: Shave My Yeti If waxing isn’t your thing, maybe you could offer to your blog visitors instead a Yeti to shave? Why not?  Check it out here. Dumb blog Widget #3: Flight of the Hamsters The instructions were too small for me to read to understand the rules or the point of the game, but it has something to do with launching hamsters into the air and then watching them splat on the ground. See if you can figure it out. Dumb blog Widget #4: Happy Sex Hour This widget allows you to spin the wheel and it chooses a position for you and your partner. I’m guessing if you’re spinning this wheel, you are probably too young to be spinning it anyways. Dumb blog Widget#5: MyDogSpace A MySpace for Dogs!!! says it all with this best dumb blog widget. It really doesn’t even do anything, just links to MyDogSpace.com. See it here. Dumb blog Widget#6: Peanut Butter Jelly Time If your blogging objectives are to annoy visitors to make sure they never return, this dancing banana is for you. It is seriously so bad I can only share the picture and the link, I would go nuts listening to this on my own site. See what I mean here. Dumb blog Widget #7: LeekSpin Watch a girl singing and spinning a leek around. Over and over again. Forever. I have no idea what she is singing about, so hopefully it is not anything obscene! This one is not as annoying as the banana one, but still thought I would link to it here so you don’t have to be forced to listen to it. If you don’t already have a blog, it might be time to get some blog hosting and start one just so you can have these dumb blog widgets on your site! So what do you think? Do you like any of these widgets? Which one seems to be the dumbest blog widget to you? Have a favorite weird or unusual blog widget I may have missed? Comments are always welcome

How to Install Wordpress:Upgrading a Blogger blog to Wordpress for Beginners, III
Continuing in the lesson on how to upgrade Blogger to a Wordpress installation! Today, I’ll explain how to install Wordpress on the web site you got up and running yesterday. (For earlier lessons click Getting a hosting plan and Creating your “website”. var AdBrite_Title_Color = '0000FF'; var AdBrite_Text_Color = '000000'; var AdBrite_Background_Color = 'FFFFFF'; var AdBrite_Border_Color = 'FFFFFF'; Your Ad Here I hope the length of these directions aren’t frighntening you off! What I’m trying to do is give a detailed illustrated explanations for an instruction that some bloggers would explain in this single line: “To install Wordpress at Dreamhost, click ‘Goodies=>OneClick Installation=>Select options’ Then click to activate”. My explanation will include screenshots, words, and also try to explain how the same advice applies if you use Fantastico instead of “one click installation”. So, how to actually install Wordpress There are at least two ways to install Wordpress: The extremely very easy way and the “hard” way. It’s not that hard.1 Nevertheless, I advise installing the easy way: The easy way to install Wordpress Use a hosting plan that offers “one click installation” or “fantastico” for Wordpress. Fill out an easy form, click a button. Wait 10 minutes. I use Dreamhost, so I can show you how to do a simple install using their service. If you use another service, you will likely find “Fantastico”, which has very similar steps. (But the screen shots will look different.). If you can’t find either, ask your support service where to find one of these services. How to use Dreamhost’s ‘one click’ installation. Log into your Dreamhost account. Look at the left hand navigation panel. Click “Goodies”; then click “One-Click Installs”. You will arrive at the “One Click install page. Decide on the directory name for your blog. Say your blog domain name is “myblogdomain.com”. You could put your blog in “myblogdomain.com/blog”. Clever directory, huh? Or, if it’s going to be a knitting blog, you could name it “myblogdomain.com/knitting”. You can call it whatever you want. We’ll assume you picked “blog”. You will find a box to enter this directory. If you decided on “blog”, enter “blog”. Scroll down the page. Select Wordpress from the list of software you can install. Scroll down more. Fill out the rest of the form: Decide on a database name– it can be anything. “Blog” is fine. Select the hostname they suggest, pick the user they suggest (or create a new one), click install. If no user exists, you will need to create a new one. The name doesn’t matter, you almost never need to remember it, and Dreamhost will make it easy for you to re-discover the name. To have a little bit of extra security beyond your password, pick something a little odd. Take a break! You’re finished for now. The “one click installation” will now create the database and perform all file transfers necessary to install Wordpress. Dreamhost will send you an email telling you it’s begun the job; they’ll send you another in 10 minutes telling you Wordpress is installed. That email will contain some fairly easy to follow instructions telling you how to customize. You’ll probably figure that out. However, since you’ve just installed the blog, you’ll naturally find it will contain no entries and look as useless as your blogger blog looked the day you first created it, but I’ll tell you how to fix that in the next lesson. What will you learn next? In the next lessons, I’ll give my additional two cents on things you should do to: Improve security. Make your blog prettier. Import your old Blogger blog entries! After that, the paths you can take with your blog diverge, so no more “beginner” lessons. You quickly find that you understand the Wordpress Jargon enough to follow the “very clear” instructions Wordpress developers give (You know, like ) Footnote: 1. If you really want to install Wordpress the hard way: Visit WordPress’s installation instructions.Follow the instructions for the five minute install. I warn you though: you will regret this. If you install the hard way, you will be forced to upgrade the hard way forever. One click upgrade only works if you used one-click installation! Upgrading a Blogger blog to Wordpress for Beginners; Lesson I
Snoskred asked me to write tutorials on how to move a Blogger blog to a Wordpress blog hosted on your own domain. So, I will write a tutorial for beginners. If you are advanced and know exactly what “FTP”, “MySQL”, “the database”, or “plugins are”, you don’t need this tutorial! In contrast, true beginners need a multi-part series that explains everything from “step 1″. When I am done, it’s likely people will be able to follow the instructions and transfer their Blogger blog with less than four hours of effort. (And some of that time will be spent shopping for an appropriate host and domain name.) var AdBrite_Title_Color = '0000FF'; var AdBrite_Text_Color = '000000'; var AdBrite_Background_Color = 'FFFFFF'; var AdBrite_Border_Color = 'FFFFFF'; Your Ad Here Today, I’m going to describe preliminaries which include picking a hosting service and registering your domain name. Preliminaries to Setting Up a Wordpress Blog. When you used Blogger, you didn’t need a hosting account and a domain. You also didn’t need to know what “FTP”. With Wordpress will need these things. That means you need to pick a host and establish a hosting account. I use Dreamhost’s crazy insane hosting, but there are many good hosts. So, what do you do first? Research hosting plans. Ask at least three friends who have run a Wordpress blog for at least 6 months to recommend a host. Ask them how much traffic they have, and if it’s similar to the amount of traffic you get, make sure they aren’t experiencing any load issues. Then, add that host to your list of candidate hosting accounts but don’t set up an account yet. Look up the price, and services for the hosting plans. Also, learn what type of support that company has. (I like Dreamhost support, which is done through tickets and email. Some companies provide online chat, which is great if you are a beginner.) Pick a hosting account that permits you to run at least twoWorpdress blogs. This means you will need to be able to create at least two MySQL databases. Why two WP installations? One will support your real blog; one will be a test blog. The test blog is optional, but it lets you check how an upgrade is going to work or test plugins are going to work before installing them on your real blog. I mostly use my test blog when developing plugins. That skanky looking blog is here Test Blog. Pick a hosting plan that includes a web based FTP service. Advanced users will scoff at this advice. They’ll say, “Come on, just use Unix!” True beginners are saying “What’s FTP?!?!” I’m guessing if you have been using Blogger, you don’t want to learn Unix just to run a Wordpress blog– and you don’t have to. These days, nearly all web web hosts support a graphical FTP service that make uploading plugins as easy as uploading your images to Flicker. If you know nothing about “FTP” and are worried, just ask the sales department at a hosting company if they have their own web based FTP. If they do, using FTP will be as easy as uploading images to Flicker. Dreamhost’sservice displays each of my domains as a “folder” or “directory”. I can click the directory links to see all the files and/or subdirectories in the folder, and I can upload by clicking “upload”. Load of other services are provided: zipping files, editing etc. It’s all very intuitive. (I also use Fetch for the Mac to upload and download files– it’s quicker, but doesn’t offer all the features Dreamhost provides. ) If they say they don’t have one, ask them to tell you how you would upload files to your hosting account (assuming you had one). The sales representative (or your friend) may make several suggestions like “use Fetch” or “use FrontPage”. If you don’t understand what they are telling you, or their method involves buying expensive software, or learning Unix, remember: there are tons of hosts that have web based FTP. If you need that service, and you need the service, find a host who provides it. Select a hosting plan that provides easy installation for Wordpress. Once again, advanced users will scoff. They will tell you that installing using FTP and a text editor is easy enough. Sure, sure. But clicking one button and letting a program someone else wrote create backups, perform file transfers and etc. is even easier. Many hosts use “Fantastico”; it’s very easy. Dreamhost has “one click installation” it’s even easier. Select the domain name you want. I registered (that is bought) “bigbucksblogger.com”. Of course, first you need to pick a domain name and check if it’s available. Here’s one way to check: visit Domaintools.com, enter a domain name (say “absolutelyridiculousdomain.com”). Click. If the domain is taken, the service will tell you who owns it. If it’s not, you will get a result like this: “Domain Status: Never Registered Before”. If it’s not registered, you’ll be able to register it. But don’t do it yet! You can register (buy) a domain name many places including your hosting company. In fact, many hosting services, including Dreamhost, provide one free domain name when you establish an account and permit you to buy more later. (I think I can buy additional domains for $9.95 through Dreamhost.) So, if the hosting company you were interested in provides a free domain name, register this when you register for hosting! You may also register domains with someone other than your hosting company. Still, for a complete beginners, it’s usually best to purchase your first domain through your hosting company because of the convenience. Why? Because if you register your domain names through your host, they will point the DNS (Domain Name Server) correctly for you. However, if you register through someone other than your host, you will need to figure out deal with your DNS yourself. Learn to point your DNS correctly. You only need to do this if you registered through someone other than your host! It’s easy to do. Ask your host the address of the “name server” for your hosting plan. They’ll tell you. My host is Dreamhost, and my nameservers have names like: ns1.dreamhost.com etc. (Note: if you absolutely can’t figure out nameservers for your domain, you may need to do tomorrow’s lesson first. The reason is that, with some hosts, you can’t get the info you need to point the DNS servers until after you create a directory.) Then, you visit your registrar (the company who sold you the domain name) and find the page that lets you change the DNS pointers. That page will look like the one shown below — but you will need to stick your host’s name servers in the boxes provided at your registrar’s site. Because Dreamhost is both my host and my registrar, I control these all at the same account. Not only that, Dreamhost set these up for me in the first place. That’s the advantage of registering a domain through your hosting service. So now what? Once you’ve figured out where you want to host your service, what domain name you want and where you want to register your domain, Take out your credit card (or paypal account number.) Open a hosting account at the hosting service, Register your domain name and Point your DNS (if necessary.) Then take a rest because you can’t do anything more for 24 hours. Your site will not be “live” until the DNS pointers do something called “resolving” and that takes time. No, you can’t even figure out if you screwed up your DNS pointers for 24 hours. Just write a post at your Blogger blog, and wait. – This is a series: Part: I, Part: II , Part: III , Part: IV.Tags:Dreams of Money WordPress

Make Your blog Easy to Read:Heck, even a Ph.D can.
Which blog do you prefer? One that makes easy things hard to understand? Or one that makes difficult things easy to understand? In “Is your blog easy to read?” Muhammad Saleem recommends the second. He also guides bloggers to an online readability tool to test the reading level of your blog. Guess what readibility level I rated? Yep. I write like I’m in grade school. I’d say that’s not bad for a gal who has also written stuff like Ensemble-average equations of a particulate mixture. I used the tool to test Volokh.com a blog written by a bunch of law professors: they write at the junior high level. I bet you’re wondering about Muhammad Saleem’s blog’s readibility level? Highschool. Tags:

Six Ways to Get More Links:Tips for a Niche Blog.
Helio of Goteborg’s History wrote asking me how to get more links for his Swedish history page. I’ll admit I’m not an expert, but my last name sounds scandinavian, so I’m motivated to give a nice Swede the few tips I know. The first tips applies to non-English language bloggers, but read generally, the other five apply to everyone. Here goes: Provide content in English. Blogging in Swedish limits your readership and linkage; English is much more widely spoken and understood. A number of translation plugins exist for Wordpress. I haven’t tried them; maybe I should. You definitely should! Polyglot is a Wordpress plugin can help you provide content in a variety of languages, but you need to supply the content in both languages. Unfortunately, writing copy in both English and Swedish is work. Try robo-translation using Word Translation Plugin; it’s free. If free doesn’t work, you can pay for Angsumans’ Översättare Plugg Pro 4.0 Befriaren also known as “Angsuman’s Translator Plugin Pro 4.0 Released”. Link or comment to niche blogs: True niche bloggers love getting links and they link back to interesting niche content. The challenge is to think of “niche” just broadly enough and to avoid becoming an obnoxious spammer. Helio, let’s take your blog as an example: you write about “The history of ‘X’ in Sweden”. So, you can link to a) history blogs, b) Swedish culture blogs and most importantly c) niche blogs about ‘X’. Your best bet is to find niche ‘X’ bloggers who seem interested in Sweden. These exist! Need proof? Do you see Lucy, the adorably cute cat to the left? Well, Wendy Johnson is attached to the hands holding Lucy. Wendy not only knits a lot; she sometimes knits Scandinavian styles. She also celebrates St. Lucia’s day every year. What good does this do you link-wise? There is a strong possibility Wendy might be interested in articles about the history of Scandinavian knitting. (Or she may not.) How might you, Helio, get a link from a blogger like Wendy? There is no sure way, but you could try this: post an interesting article about the history of Swedish knitting mentioning the Bohus Tradition; mention modern day knitters who still knit these things. Link Wendy’s Bohus sweater. (BTW: It’s a great sweater; she’s a famous American knitter and knitting book author. Your readers will probably be interested in the link!) If your article is interests Wendy, she might link back. (BTW: be sure to use WP-Cache if she does. Click to read why.) Now, don’t focus on Wendy; she’s an example. And let’s face it; she doesn’t want to be spammed. I want you to generalize the advice I gave you. Do you plan a post about The History of Luttefisk? Find A list (or B or C list) food bloggers who might be interested in Luttefisk. (Or better yet, blog about something edible.) Swedish Furniture? Find bloggers who discuss Swedish furniture or interior design. What can bloggers other than Helio do: Think about their niche broadly. Try to link to people in their tight niche, then try to find creative ways to link to people who overlap their niche. Out link a lot. When first starting out, linking one person per post probably won’t do the trick. Make your goal to link to at least five bloggers who might be interested in your post. I’m bad. Finding five people is work. Looking at the links I’ve dropped so far, no one is likely to link back! Identify your “link-niche”. How? Ask other people who visit your blog. You, Helio, may think your niche is History. It is, but are historians going to link you a lot? I think your “link-niche” is also Sweden! Swedish Americans; are dotty for Sweden. Find them; they will probably link more than historians. Or not– still, it’s worth aiming for links from both niches. I have no idea how you can attract historian bloggers. But, with a name like mine, I know loads of people who are dotty about Swedish culture. If you want to find niche bloggers are interested in Swedish culture, try Googling. Add Swedish term to the “niche” you are connecting too. Googling “Knitting Lucia” is odd, but it works. When you eventually blog about the history of Swedish food, try “food scandinavian”. It won’t hurt to try “luttefisk blogger”, or “crafts Swedish”. To find Swedish groups, Google “Swedish Days” of “Swedish Museum”. (Heck, try Andersenville, Chicago.) This will take time, but if you find a blogger who is posting regularly, and mentions anything Swedish, finding a reasonable, non-spammy excuse to link them would be helpful. Your goal is to get these bloggers to notice your post. Their response is in their hands! Always verify you pinged or tracked-back. If you mess up a link, linking won’t leave a trackback or pingback. If the blogger’s blog doesn’t post trackbacks, you won’t leave a trackback. If the blogger’s blog doesn’t let Wordpress autodiscover the trackback, you might not leave a trackback. You really need that trackback. So, after you hit publish, always go back to “edit” your post. Scroll down and check whether or not a trackback was sent. If it was not, check your link is correct. If the link is correct, visit the page and search for “trackback”, find the url, add it to the trackback box at Wordpress. Save your post again. After that, trackbacks are in the hands of the blogger you pinged or tracked back. Use StumbleUpon. This is for traffic– but you need traffic to get links. Besides, I suspect StumbleUpon friends are often bloggers: they are more likely to drop a link than non-stumblers. So, join StumbleUpon. Install the toolbar. Make a decent profile. Apply a few of my tips. Spend one or two hours a week stumbling content in your niches. Find friends in your niche, defined broadly: History is a niche. Sweden is another niche. Afterwards, find the correct niches for your individual posts. If necessary, self stumble– but it’s best to be patient and wait for someone else to stumble because you’ll get more traffic, get more friends and fans. Heck, write a good post about the history Bohus knitting, let me know and I’ll Stumble the English language version and tag it “knitting”. Summary of How to Get Links So, the short advice is: provide content in English, link to bloggers, link to a lot of bloggers, develop a method of identifying bloggers who are interested in your niche (who you can later link and who will link you), make sure you they know you linked them, use StumbleUpon to make friends with… uhmm… interested bloggers! Oliver Steiner, 30. Oktober 2007
