Businesses who depend largely on traffic to their website will often offer you to sign up as an affiliate. Sometimes, some businesses will even offer you a bonus by just signing up as an affiliate. Business cases are also interesting for me. Products that bring homes a distinctive feel reflecting modern life. Year-long cumulative bonuses, data feeds, and residual payments make this program a winner. Products having return policies can increase the conversion rate but may also lead to debiting in case of a chargeback. Promoting products sold on a trial period basis requires cookie detection to track sales at the end of the period which is very unreliable. Websites with high quality content, relevant keywords and more importantly, the right information about the product and not empty hyped-up advertisements, allow you to earn big in affiliate marketing even while you sleep. If you are not able to sustain the interest of your site visitor, you won’t be able to lead him through the sales process. Web affiliates agree to display a company’s web links and/or banners on their website. They can even go a step further by advocating their benefits in their online newsletters and e-mails. Website submission into the best and most popular search engines on the net. HOW your web site is submitted does make a difference! Choose a program which offers relevant content. If you sell computers, look for a program which offers software banners, for example. Choose affiliate program that are already successful and well established like SFI. Choose the one that offer good training and good marketing aids. Choose affiliate programs that complement your Web site content. If your site is all about sports, then chances are you will want to skip on setting up a co-branded Web store for cartoon themed car accessories. Online directories offer you a chance to compare different programs and select the best possible one with ease. Some popular online affiliate directories for finding two tier commission affiliate programs are 2-tier.com and 2tiered.com. Online affiliate marketing is a way of making money by joining with the affiliate network of a company and place a link of the product or service offered by that company in our website. When a person buys a product by visiting this link we will be getting an amount as commission. Promoting a relatively new product is a good practice. You can judge the response of that product by marketing the selected product through advertising search engines. Promote the best affiliate programs and you will be rewarded overtime. It does not matter which niche you are targeting.

affiliate marketing - Promoting and Marketing
affiliate marketing involves promoting and marketing the products or services by an affiliate in return for commission. There are many advantages to signing up for an affiliate program when you want to earn affiliate income. There is hardly any investment and having a website or product of your own is optional. All you need is your affiliate links and you can promote them by writing informative content or through a blog that you can set up for free. There is no market research. You don’t get into the hassles of dealing with customer service issues or claims. There are no inventories to hold and no products to ship. You do not even have to set up your own merchant account or payment systems. Successful affiliates generate massive income and there are plenty of examples online. Some of them even share the secrets of their success by creating their own information product. However, the success does not happen overnight. It does require persistent effort and time to steadily build the online business. It is important to select the right affiliate marketing campaign and basically believe in the product before one can start to earn affiliate income. By choosing a product that has an established need, the risks involved can be minimized. Most affiliate marketing campaigns will offer support in the form of marketing tools like banner ads, good sales letters, and even free websites. A major advantage for someone getting into affiliate marketing is developing multiple streams of income. There is no limitation to the number of products an affiliate can promote. In fact, most experts recommend that it is better to have a diverse product range so that you have more to offer each prospective customer visiting your link. Also, in case one company withdraws one of the products you promote, you will still have something to offer your customers. This also ensures that you earn affiliate income consistently. Newbies to affiliate marketing often wonder how to generate massive income from affiliate programs that claim that you do not need a website! The fact is, you can reach many of your target customers through various means. You can use video marketing through sites like YouTube that is very effective. There is pay-per-click advertising through programs, and so on. Clickbank is one of the best ways to make money with affiliate marketing. It takes a lot of motivation and patience to become successful and with the passage of time; you learn all the tricks and tips that help you reach your income goals faster. addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fselectaffiliates.com%2F2008%2F02%2Faffiliate-marketing-the-basics%2F'; addthis_title = 'Affiliate+Marketing+-+The+Basics'; addthis_pub = '';

What is your opinion of social networking?
November 15th, 2008 by John Dilbeck
Over the last couple of years, I’ve invested a lot of time and effort into using a variety of social networking sites to enlarge my circle of friends and associates on the web. I believe that it is working out well for me and I’m enjoying keeping in touch with my online friends. Until today, I was showing a couple of widgets from MyBlogLog.com that showed the social networking sites I’m active on and some of the latest things I’ve written on a variety of the sites I frequent. It turns out that those widgets were interfering with the appearance of polls I create using PollDaddy.com, so I moved both of the social networking widgets to a new social networking page, here on this blog. That solved two problems I’ve been having. One, it speeds up page loads a bit because it reduces calls to MyBlogLog.com from every page. Two, it makes it possible to add polls to articles I write. I don’t know how many polls I’ll be creating, but I’m going to try a few to see what we can learn. There is an art to creating polls that get reliable results. I am not a master of that art, yet. Therefore, I’m afraid that some of my polls will be worded incorrectly and may skew the results. Since nothing really important will be affected by these polls, I’m not going to worry much about it and I’ll just add polls when there is something I’d like to learn more about from the readers of this blog and other places I’ll show the polls. You never have to participate in the polls, but I welcome your voting and your comments. In the following poll, I’m asking your opinion of social networking. I realize that your opinion may not match my preconceived notions, so you can select multiple choices and add your own if it isn’t already there. To add your own answer if it doesn’t match one of the choices next to the checkboxes, just enter it in the gray text bar between the last checkbox and the View Results link. (At least, that’s what I hope it will do.) When you’ve made your selections or added your “other” opinion, don’t forget to click on the Vote button. View Poll I look forward to your opinions and thoughts about social networking. Act on your dream! JD Rate this: 2.9 Share and Enjoy:

Tip Jars Part Two
November 16th, 2008 by John Dilbeck
I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about tip jars since I wrote What do you think about tip jars on websites? back in September. As I wrote in my last comment on that thread, I leave tips on some very useful sites, such as thefluffanutta’s SquidUtils.com. He provides an outstanding service for Squidoo lensmasters and I’m happy to leave him a tip when I think about it. I’m going to leave the PayPal donate button in the right column of this blog, whether or not it gets used. On the other hand, I removed the TopSpots list yesterday. After two months, with thousands of visitors and no nibbles, I simply deleted it. *Poof!* I’ll still use that service to advertise this blog on other blogs I like, but won’t be offering it here. In general, I don’t like to have paid links on my sites, and this was the only one where I was doing anything like that. So, even though I was playing by all the rules I know, it never felt comfortable for me. I don’t think there is anything wrong with TopSpots, but it just doesn’t feel like a good fit here. Act on your dream! JD Rate this: 2.9 Share and Enjoy:

Can AWeber and Squidoo Work Together?
November 17th, 2008 by John Dilbeck
Why can’t active sign-up forms for AWeber mailing lists be added to Squidoo lenses? Is there a solution? Today, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about this subject, because the ability to add AWeber subscription forms to my Squidoo lenses is very important to my plans for next year. I don’t believe there are any unsolvable technical problems stopping these two companies from working together. It is very easy to add active AWeber subscription forms on other sites. They provide two easy-to-use methods: Javascript and HTML forms. You can see an example of the HTML version of a subscription form on every page of this site, right below my photo in the right column. You can see an example of the javascript version of a sign-up form on the Subscribe page on this site. In both cases, I accomplished what I wanted in just a few minutes. Unfortunately, I’ve been looking for a way to do this simple task on my Squidoo lenses for months. I thought I found a solution last week, and it worked very well, but it is being killed by Squidoo. I just created a new lens with an open letter to Tom Kulzer, CEO and founder of AWeber.com, and Seth Godin, Founder of Squidoo.com, asking if they can find a way to work together to make it possible for us to do something that I believe will have a relatively easy solution. I also emailed each of them and invited them to view the lens. You are invited to come read the lens and express your opinions: Can AWeber and Squidoo Work Together? Perhaps this isn’t a technical problem. Maybe it’s just a lack of motivation on the part of both companies to develop a solution. I don’t know. Tom and Seth, I hope you’ll find a way to make this happen. While it may not be important to the vast majority of Squidoo lensmasters, it is important to some of us - possibly many of us. I believe it may be important to many AWeber customers. I’ve added a couple of polls to the lens and I invite everyone who reads this to come and voice your opinions and help spread the word to others who may want to combine the power of the services AWeber and Squidoo provide. Act on your dream! JD Rate this: 2.9 Share and Enjoy:

Seth Godin on how to make money on the Internet
November 20th, 2008 by John Dilbeck
I believe that Seth Godin is a marketing genius and has as good an idea as anyone about how marketing and making money are evolving. I’ve been paying attention to most of what he has been saying for a few years and I’ve learned a lot in the process. Today, on his blog, he writes: Make money: not by building an internet company, but by using the net as a tool to create value and get paid. Use the internet as a tool, not as an end. Do it when you are part of a big organization or do it as a soloist. The dramatic leverage of the net more than overcomes the downs of the current economy. The essence is this: connect. Then he goes on to explain 10 ways to connect the disconnected. Obviously, it’s not an exhaustive list, but it’s a good springboard for thinking about how you can add value by helping people make connections. You can read the entire article on Seth’s blog: How to make money using the Internet So, how can you help connect people and make money doing it? Act on your dream! JD Rate this: 2.9 Share and Enjoy:

In Memory of Mattie Lee Dilbeck
November 25th, 2008 by John Dilbeck
Today, instead of affiliate marketing, I’m going to talk about Mattie Lee Dilbeck, my Mom. In memory of Mattie Lee Dilbeck Mom died on Friday evening, November 21, 2008, and it was a difficult day for several reasons. Before I talk about her death, I want to talk about her life. I am one generation from the farm. Mom and Dad both grew up on farms and worked very hard when they were young, and that’s something that probably made them stronger when they were old. I don’t know how many stories I’ve heard about plowing fields behind horses and mules under the hot summer sun or picking crops when their fingers were so cold they could hardly move early in the fall mornings. My Mom was the oldest in her family and Dad was the youngest in his. Mom and her younger brother, Floyd, used to work together to plow the fields when they were young because it took both of them to manage a plow. Mom collected arrowheads they found in the fields and I still have a few of them, now. Mom was born on November 6, 1920, and was a child of the Great Depression. As a result, she recycled and reused everything. She was a master at getting full use out of something and discarded it only when it was completely used up. She was a master at getting the full value of coupons and spent years clipping and passing them around to her friends and relatives, easily saving several hundred dollars per month in foods and household goods, which was a useful skill when money is tight, and it has always been tight in our family. Mom had to drop out of school before finishing high school to help on the farm. It was only when she was in her mid-20s that she learned of the Berry school in Rome, Georgia. Even though she was about ten years older than her schoolmates, she went back to high school at Berry Academy. For the next few years, she worked her way through the school and one of the things she loved was baking for her fellow students. While there, she saw Henry Ford when he visited the school and - if memory serves - she made a short speech for him and his friends. When she graduated, she was Valedictorian of her class and this was a great accomplishment for her and is something she valued her whole life. After Berry, she moved to Chattanooga and started studying nursing at Erlanger Hospital. In those days, nursing students could not be married (for whatever strange reason) and she was less than a year from graduating when she met Bill Dilbeck. Mom’s sister Geneva told me that it was a love that could not be denied. Mom was an honest person her entire life. She told the truth, even when it was inconvenient. Some of her classmates told her to get married and just lie about it. That was what a few of them had already done. Mom would not do that. She quit nursing school and was married in December 1950. Mom and Dad moved to the Atlanta area. My grandmother, Cornelia Godfrey, was sick and I think Mom helped care for her. My memory is vague about some of this. Cornelia died shortly before I was born, so I never knew her. I’ve been told that I missed a very good person. I was born in 1952 and my brother, David, in 1957. While going through Mom’s papers yesterday, I found a two page receipt for the hospital stay and services when I was born at Georgia Baptist Hospital. For delivery, doctor’s fees, anesthesiologist, surgical, miscellaneous, and a room for three days, the grand total for my birth was $74.20, paid in cash on July 4, 1952, when they brought me home. Dad wanted to call me Firecracker, but Mom put a stop to that. It’s a shame, because I like being called Firecracker. I won’t go into a lot of detail. The highpoints… David was born in December 1957. I don’t know what he cost. We moved to Vero Beach, Florida in 1960, because of Dad’s arthritis. He worked hard managing several thousand acres of citrus crops during the early 60s. We were close enough to Cape Canaveral that we could watch the rockets of the space program launch on TV and then rush outside to see them streak upwards into the sky. When the first Saturn V launched, we were amazed to be able to read “USA” on the rocket from about 70 miles away without even using binoculars. After going through a hurricane in 1965, Dad decided that was going to be his first, and last, experience with those storms and we moved back to the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Dad was hired back at his old job at Mullins Brothers Paving Contractors in East Point when we happened to run into his old boss in a restaurant while looking for a place to live. Dad never even had to look for a job. How’s that for a sign? They bought a house in southern Fulton County and Dad worked at Mullins Brothers until he retired in the early 1970s. Mom worked as a power machine operator at several factories and worked even harder raising a couple of cantankerous sons. Dad had been raised in eastern Tennessee and Mom in north Georgia. When he retired, they split the difference and bought a house - the one I’m in this morning - in Murphy, NC. That way, they’d be able to visit both branches of the family fairly easily. Dad was about seven years older than Mom, so she had to work when they got here. She worked as a power machine operator for several years and then was hired on the Older Americans project by the USDA, where she worked in a tree orchard for several years. By this time, I had moved to Murphy to help them out because Dad’s health had started to decline. Even so, he could outwork me any time he wanted. I taught computer programming at the local community college. When Mom retired, she signed up for college, because it had always bothered her that she never was able to finish college and dropping out of nursing school had been one of the big disappointments of her life. A couple of years later, Mom graduated with an Associates degree in Business Administration, and then she retired. Life went pretty well for both of them for the next few years. In the summer of 1991, just a few days after going to watch the Independence Day fireworks, Dad died in his favorite chair of a massive heart attack. One minute, he was getting ready to go work in the garden and the next minute he was gone. For the next 17 years, Mom continued to live here. She was an active gardener and loved flowers and herbs. She could tell you more than I ever wanted to know about any flower or plant in her garden and around the property. Mom spent over 30 years studying our family history and easily knew more about the Godfreys and Dilbecks (our direct branches, at least) than anyone else on the planet. Much of this research was done before the Internet, and it required writing many letters and visiting many places to find the information she needed. I’ve put a small portion of what she learned on my Genealogy page or Genealogy Overview page. I have boxes of records - mostly hand-written - that Mom collected during her genealogy research and we’re lucky that she compiled a good bit of it into a couple of books that she had printed for our family. Several of us have copies of those books. We lost a great family historian when Mom declined to the point she could no longer do the genealogy research she loved so much. Mom was always learning something. She has dozens of books about birds (she loved hummingbirds), flowers, gardening, cooking, and many topics related to her religion. Mom was friendly and could talk to anyone. She was a loving parent, loyal friend, devout Christian, and would do anything she could to help someone in need. Mom was always scrupulously honest, even when it was not convenient for her. She taught me how to read several years before I entered first grade and encouraged my education throughout my life. In 2001, on Halloween, she started bleeding and couldn’t get it to stop. I took her to the emergency room. A few days later, on her birthday, she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Weeks of radiation and chemo preceded surgery in Asheville, NC. What was expected to be a stay of a few days turned into over six weeks in two hospitals. The cancer surgery was successful, but she suffered nerve damage that left her in constant pain, and unable to walk or care for herself. They wanted to put her in a nursing home in Asheville, but after talking it over with Mom, I said, “No.” My daughter and I brought Mom home and I cared for her - where she wanted to be - until August 2008. It was a lot of work, but I would make the same choice today. She helped me when I needed it, and I have been happy to return the favor when she needed my help. In August, her health suddenly declined and she had to be hospitalized. A week later she was moved to the nursing home attached to the hospital. Her health continued to decline and she found it harder to communicate as the weeks went by. The last couple of weeks were frustrating. She was losing weight and strength. After her birthday, it was difficult to communicate with her. It seemed that she understood what she was hearing, but could not complete a sentence. On Thursday, November 20, 2008, I started running a fever and throwing up. All the yucky side-effects of getting sick. I was planning to visit her Friday afternoon, but was sick enough I had to call the nursing home and ask them to tell her I would not be able to make it. Late Friday afternoon, Mom’s doctor

Happy Thanksgiving!
November 27th, 2008 by John Dilbeck
I want to wish a very Happy Thanksgiving to all my friends around the world, even if you live in a country that doesn’t celebrate today as a holiday. Today, I’m thankful for a loving family, great friends, and hot chocolate on a cold morning. I’m also thankful for all the friends I’ve met online who live on widely separated continents. Most of you, I’ll never meet in person, but some of you have become very good friends. Yesterday, I spent a very enjoyable day with my family and friends. Today, I’ll spend more time with family. I made sure to hug everyone, some more than once. I’ll get back to business next week. Today is a day to celebrate being grateful for all the things I’ve received, the great friends I’ve met, and the joy of a loving family. I hope you have a wonderful day, too. All the best, JD Rate this: 2.9 Share and Enjoy:

Getting back to work
December 12th, 2008 by John Dilbeck
I’ve been missing in action the last couple of weeks. After Mom’s funeral and burial, I thought I was doing okay. For about a week, I was surrounded by family and some of my closest friends and everything was going well. Then, last week and this week, I have been alone in this house with so many memories of my Mom and Dad, and I just haven’t felt like doing anything. So, I took some time off. Mostly, I’ve been watching movies and TV shows I’ve rented from NetFlix and sleeping. I’ve downloaded a couple of thousand emails and responded to the most important. The others will be skimmed or just deleted. If you sent me an important email and I haven’t responded in the next week, please resend it. I’ll try to keep up from here onward. This week has been rather miserable. I woke up from a nap and thought I was getting a kidney infection or worse. The pain was sharp and intense. I couldn’t get comfortable sitting, standing, or lying down. Fortunately, after a few days, I was sure it was a pinched nerve instead of a kidney infection or stone, so I started doing some easy stretches several times a day. Yesterday, I felt a pop when I moved just right and the pain is now much less and seems to be going away. That’s a very welcome relief. If you’ve ever been in constant pain, you know how hard it is to concentrate on doing anything while you’re hurting. I didn’t expect Mom’s death to take all the wind out of my sails, but it did. So much of my life has been focused on caring for her that I just didn’t know what to do. So, I gave myself permission to do nothing, for awhile. This morning, I woke up for the first time feeling like I wanted to get back to work. I tried making myself get back to work last week, but it wasn’t working. Today, however, I feel very different. I’m looking forward to getting my business back on track and writing about the things that have been working for me. Fortunately, even though I haven’t felt like doing anything for the last three weeks, my websites have been working night and day for me. I’ve continued to make affiliate commissions for sales of Site Build It! and other products I’m proud to use and promote. Even though I haven’t done much of anything with my Squidoo lenses for the last couple of months, I still received a payment from Squidoo this week and that doesn’t take into account the sign-ups to various offers and affiliate commissions I’ve made on those lenses. Lots of you have been purchasing t-shirts, calendars, mugs, shopping bags, and other products from my Shirts-Mugs-Hats.com shop, powered by CafePress. While sales are lower than last year, it’s always nice to see lots of “You made a sale at CafePress” subject lines in my incoming email. Thanks to all of you who have purchased this year! And, of course, there are quite a few other, smaller, income streams that add up to enough to make working at home profitable and worthwhile for me. I have plans for more systematization of my marketing efforts in 2009 and I’m going to share what I’ve been learning with you in the coming months. To be sure you don’t miss anything, you may want to subscribe to this blog’s RSS feed (see the large RSS icon at the top-right of every page) or subscribe to the postings via email by filling in the form at the top of the right column of every page, right below my photo. I’ll do my best to make it worth your while. Despite the world-wide economic problems, it is still worth promoting quality products - whether they are your own or via affiliate links - and earning from every sale. Everything moves in cycles. The economic situation will improve in time, and those who put in the work now will be in a good place when confidence rises and people start spending more in the future. It’s okay to take some time off, now and then, but it’s not okay to quit. I’ve just been taking some time off, and now it’s time to go back to work. Act on your dream! Site Build It - the best time of year to buy
December 12th, 2008 by John Dilbeck
Are you familiar with Site Build It!? If you’ve visited any of my sites, blogs, forums, and communities, you’ve most likely seen ads and articles about Site Build It! and why I like it so much. Still, you may not have taken the time to really learn about it and why it is like no other online business solution. Site Build It! is much more than just a webhosting company. It’s an all-in-one hosting, site-building, and online-success-making system that can possibly change a life. SiteSell, the manufacturer, actually guarantees online success if you follow the proven system. Here’s a short video that explains the product… Take the video tour, now. Over 100,000 customers, including me, have already used it to create real online businesses that let us work from home or wherever we want (it’s a Web based system). Sitesell has plenty of testimonials to prove it too. Take a look at their Case Studies page. Or this page of videos that were actually done by their customers… I Love SBI But the best news of all is… Now is the absolute best time of the year to buy Site Build It!. They have a Holiday Special going on where you can buy-one-site and get-one-free. It ends up being about $150 per site. (Although Sitesell offers discounts on purchasing two sites at other major holidays, this is the only time of the year where you get the second site free. All the other holiday specials offer the second site for $100 when you purchase the first site at $299. This holiday special is a true buy-one-get-one-free discount. Don’t miss it.) I know what you’re saying. Why do I need more than one site? You don’t! You can always give the other one away as a New Year’s gift. Or sell it. Or find a friend who wants a great deal too. But you might want to keep it. Did you know that the majority of people making a full-time living online have more than one site. You just might double your pleasure… and income. When you get one site to where it is producing a reliable income stream, you’ll understand why you may want to create other niche-oriented, content-rich sites to increase your revenue with additional income streams. Not everyone wants to manage more than one site, but many Site Build It! subscribers do. And did I mention that Sitesell guarantees your success. Yep! You can get your money-back if you don’t feel that it will help you build a successful online business. There’s really no risk involved. (If you ask for a refund in the first 30 days, you’ll get 100% of your money back. After that, Sitesell will refund your subscription price on a prorata basis at any time during your one-year subscription period. Their site offers all the details.) Once you understand the Site Build It! process, you’ll be hooked. Most people think that all you need is hosting and site-builder software to make a Web site. That’s technically true. But getting people to find that Web site is the key to building a long-term business that actually makes real money. Without traffic your site will be lost in the wilderness. One reason webhosting is offered so cheaply by so many companies is because of the few resources most websites require. Since most sites get very few visitors, some other webhosting services, not Sitesell, put hundreds of domains on a single server (computer) and rake in the cash from domain owners whose websites sit there waiting for someone to visit. On the other hand, the Site Build It! system helps you build a site that people are looking for. Their C-T-P-M system teaches you how to create a site that’s in demand. Once you have traffic, then you can choose many ways to turn that traffic into revenue. Here’s a page that explains their proven process… Site Build It’s C-T-P-M system for online business success. Doesn’t it just make sense? But I don’t know anything about the Internet, you say. Or HTML. I’m no computer geek, you’re thinking. Can you send email? Have you used a word processor? If you can do that, you can build a Site Build It! site. It’s really a simple process that is doable by anyone. All you need is the motivation and commitment to follow the process. If you can’t do that then Site Build It! is not for you. It’s not “Get Rich Quick.” There’s really no such thing. But if you have the motivation and a little brains you CAN do it. After all, your success is guaranteed. What have you got to lose. Here’s where you can go to read about that guarantee… Site Build It’s order page with a link to the guarantee. And maybe use that Buy-One, Get-One-Free Special to start a whole new life. But hurry. This holiday special offer ends at midnight on December 25, 2008. (If past history is an indicator, there is a good chance that the offer may be extended until just after January 1, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Don’t procrastinate; you don’t want to miss this special.) Who knows, perhaps you or someone you know will be able to change your, or their, life in 2009. Why give someone a gift that will be a flash-in-the-pan and will be forgotten or ignored in a few days or weeks. Give the gift of Site Build It! and help someone develop one of the most important skills of the 21st Century. Do it for yourself or someone else you care about. I’m happy that I am a Site Build It! subscriber and I’ll be adding a lot to my site in the coming months. I hope you’ll be one of the new SBI success stories in 2009. Act on your dream! Are you chasing your tail?
December 12th, 2008 by John Dilbeck
Introduction: The purpose of this post is to get all of us thinking about what we’re doing to build our businesses and what we’re doing that is just a complete waste of time. Caution, this post rambles even more than most of the other things I write. I want to solicit your opinions and hear about your experiences. I’ll ask more questions than I’ll answer. I hope you’ll think seriously about the questions I raise and join the conversation. Now, on to the questions of the day… If you look back on the last year - assuming you’ve been building your online business that long - have you been making progress or just chasing your tail? You know what I mean. We all love to watch a kitten or puppy chase its tail and run in circles until it falls over. It’s entertaining. It’s amusing. To us. To the kitten or puppy, it’s frustrating. If they don’t catch their tail, they get tired and quit. If they do catch it, they learn not to bite so hard the next time. You’ve seen this and laughed. If not, do a search on YouTube. I’m sure you’ll find many hours of interesting pet videos that illustrate the point I’m making. In fact, the very act of searching on YouTube and watching these videos is a good example of chasing your own tail. After spending minutes, or hours, doing this, what do you have to show for your time and effort? Not much. The same principle applies to building your home business. Are you making progress, or are you simply chasing your tail? Are you running off, hither and yon, looking for the secret to Internet marketing success? How many websites have you visited? How many newsletters have you subscribed to? How many gurus have you followed? How many ebooks have you bought and downloaded? How many of those ebooks have you read? How many affiliate marketing programs have you joined? How many social networks have you joined? How often do you tweet on Twitter? How many friends are you trying to keep up with? How much email have you read? Or, are you spending your time developing and promoting your marketing business? If you’ve done your basic homework, you probably already know all you need to know to begin building your online business. There are no secrets. Much of what you need to know is available to you for free. For example, read Ken Evoy’s free ebooks, the affiliate Masters Course or his best selling Make Your Site Sell!, which is now free to download. But, if you don’t plan to study those books - or whatever guides you prefer - and put into action what you learn, what’s the point? If you don’t learn and act on what you learn, you’ll never build a business, no matter how busy you are. Are you building your business or are you simply chasing your tail? View Poll If you intend to earn a living from marketing, don’t you think it is time to learn how to build a marketing system that will work for you? A system that will help you focus on what works best and do more of it? There are so many distractions and so many things are promoted as the best way to become successful with your online business, but most of them don’t work for most of us. How do we stop chasing our tail and focus on what works best when we don’t yet know what works best for us? It is especially frustrating when what works well for me may not work well for you, and vice versa. Still, there have to be some basic marketing fundamentals that will apply to all of us, don’t you think? Which is better? (A) Posting free classified ads on a dozen sites or (B) building your own focused marketing blog or website? Which is better? (A) making 100 Squidoo lenses on assorted topics or (B) making 100 Squidoo lenses on different topics related to your marketing niche? Which is better? (A) promoting a hundred different products and services or (B) promoting the top ten products for your particular niche? Which is better? (A) talking about everything you think about or (B) focusing on your particular niche and branding yourself so others will think of you when that topic comes to mind? Which is better? (A) promoting hither and yon hoping for one-time sales or (B) building a marketing funnel (or funnels) for your business and each of the products and services you recommend to your readers? Which is better? (A) spending hours a day clicking on a traffic exchange or (B) spending a few days creating a new marketing funnel for a particular product, including writing a benefits-laden report about the product, creating an autoresponder series for it, writing a page about it on your website, blogging about it, creating a Squidoo lens about it, tweeting about it, and promoting everywhere that is appropriate, with the goal to get your readers to join your list and download the report you wrote. I’m asking these questions just to get you to think about this. There are no right or wrong answers. Well, maybe some choices are more right than others, especially if you’re serious about building your online affiliate marketing business. What do you want to accomplish at the end of the day, week, month, or next year? Do you want lots of visitors to your sites? Do you want good ratings on your lenses? Do you want lots of comments on your blog posts? Do you want lots of people to subscribe to your list(s) and download your report(s)? Do you want larger commission checks every month? What do you want to accomplish with the time, effort, and money you invest into your business? Are you just chasing your own tail? I’ve done a lot of that and I’m starting to realize how much time I’ve wasted, and time is much more valuable than money. What do you want to earn as payment for the effort you put into your marketing efforts? Enough for a movie and dinner? Maybe make a car payment? Pay your rent or mortgage every month? Earn enough to quit your job? Build a business that enables you to thrive and not just survive? What is your time and effort worth? I hope this post sparks a good conversation. What are we doing that gets us nowhere and how can we substitute better methods to build our businesses? I know which way I’ll be going in 2009. Have you thought about what you are going to do? What do you think will work best - for you - in 2009 as you work hard to define your niche, target your best customers, promote the best products and services they need, and increase your revenue? I’m all ears. Act on your dream! JD Rate this: 2.9 Share and Enjoy:

Keyword research tools - Shopping.com Consumer Demand Index
December 13th, 2008 by John Dilbeck
Do you want to promote popular products? How can you find current lists of popular keyword searches for hot products already organized by category? Is this an impossible dream? Not at all. See Shopping.com’s Consumer Demand Index for a list of all their categories. Click the category name to see a list of relatively current keywords and search phrases. If you then click one of the search phrases, you’ll go to a page that lists the products related to that term on Shopping.com. Yes, Shopping.com is a competitor if you are promoting popular products through your affiliate links, but look at it another way. They’ve done a lot of your keyword research for you, and they’re making it available, for free. In addition, they group everything by category. These pages should help you in your brainstorming and keyword research. I wouldn’t depend on this as my only source for keywords, but it’s a nice tool if you promote the products they list or similar products. On the other hand, if you’re shopping instead of marketing, is this a helpful page? Who does it help most? Shoppers or marketers? Customers or competitors? What do you think? Helpful or not? Act on your dream! JD Rate this: 2.9 Share and Enjoy:
